I think its a safe bet to say that a large majority of AR15 owners don’t do any real training with their weapon which is unfortunate. The extent of their skill is based on hitting the bulls-eye (or all around it) on a small square target at 50 to 100 yards and that’s about it. Those who find themselves using their AR15 on the job, in self defense, etc will tell you that either 1. They wish they had done more real world training instead of plinking or 2. They are glad they did the training they did because it helped prepare them for a real world situation. Up until recently that training was typically done with either IDPA or IPSC targets, etc. The issue with these targets is that while some are very detailed and feature a head, shoulder and torso silhouette, they were not designed to full scale. This is where the target master Rob from TacStrike stepped in and created the BSYF Target.
Rob worked in conjunction with Pat Goodale of Practical Firearms Training to design a full size target based on the size of the average American male which is 5’10″. Pat has always taught that you need to train as if your attacker/opponent will probably be Bigger, Stronger, Younger and Faster than you which is why they named the target the TacStrike BSYF target. Pat, like many trainers, also teaches his students three main aiming points when engaging your opponent which are Head, Center Chest (Center Mass) and Pelvic Girdle (Pelvis, Bones Around Groin Area, etc). All three of these area’s are designated on the target with a perforated circle about the size of your open hand which Pat teaches is combat accuracy. There are also perforations which outline the arms as well.
Rob told me that the targets were made without distinct features for a few reasons. First, your attacker will not have some bright red circle that says “Shoot me here!”. Second, as Senior Instructor at PFT he has talked with many of his peers and they are concerned with having undercover reporters showing up to take their classes and they don’t want to give them anything they can twist into fuel to throw on the fire of why we need more gun control. “Having a human face or anatomy target on the line during an open registration class if this happens will not go well.” However, you can always use a marker or paint can to highlight these regions if you so choose to.
If you want to train effectively you need to train as if you’re actually in the fight right now. “Practice the way you’ll play” The TacStrike BSYF Target will help you do just that!
