ARES Defense Announces Belt-Fed MCR® Lite at NASGW

Posted on November 2nd, 2015 by ar15news

If I ever get around to doing a full auto lower I will totally need to add an ARES Defense MCR belt fed upper. ARES Defense has been introducing a lot of new stuff lately and this new “Lite” version of their MCR upper is the most recent. Check out the press release below.

**Press Release**

MELBOURNE, FL, October 30, 2015 ARES Defense Systems, the country’s leading manufacturer of innovative, mission-configurable firearms, parts and accessories announced the introduction of its belt-fed MCR® Lite at NASGW in New Orleans. The MCR® Lite is an upper receiver assembly that fits standard AR15/M4 lower receivers and just like the full-featured MCR® (Mission Configurable Rifle) upper receivers, it features gas-piston operation, a true (3 second) quick-change barrel assembly and the ability to feed from M27 linked ammunition belts or standard AR magazines at the shooter’s discretion.

ARES Defense MCR Lite

“ARES Defense built its business on our belt-fed rifles and upper receiver assemblies which among others, have been purchased by civilians, US government and militaries overseas.” says Geoffrey Herring, President-CEO of ARES Defense. “At 8.5 lbs, the MCR® is the lightest and most portable belt-fed in the world and like all ARES Defense products is 100% Made in the USA. We recently released an engineering test video of our AMG-2 government model where we demonstrate a continuous 700-round burst of automatic fire to show the reliability of our belt-fed line. While the full-featured MCR® and AMG-2 models are a first choice for professional shooters, we wanted to provide a Lite model that allows recreational shooters to experience the thrill of our belt-fed systems at a fraction of the price of our full-feature models.”

The primary differences between the MCR® and the MCR® Lite is that the Lite model has a fixed gas port, aluminum feed tray, round feed roller housing and lighter barrel than the MCR®. Available for immediate shipment by ARES Defense and also being carried by distributors AMCHAR, RSR and others, the MCR® Lite carries an MSRP price tag of $2,995.

Posted on October 19th, 2015 by ar15news

If you’ve been looking for a new barrel but haven’t been looking at one from Faxon Firearms, odds are you’ve missed exactly what you were looking for. Over the past few years, Faxon Firearms took their knowledge from creating barrels for their ARAK-21 uppers and applied that to making barrels for standard AR-15 uppers and have created a huge list of different profiles, lengths and calibers that they offer. They just introduced a new 14.5″ 5.56, M4 PROFILE, CARBINE GAS, 4150 STEEL QPQ barrel which, like all other Faxon Firearms barrels comes in at a great price point. At just $165, this should be a no-brainer. If this isn’t the profile, length or caliber you are looking for, chances are you can find it on their website. Check it out at

Medium profile for maximum heat resistance during spirited firing. 4150 QPQ coated inside and out for amazing corrosion resistance and durability.

Faxon Firearms barrels are the pinnacle of value. Manufactured 100% in-house from cradle-to-grave, these barrels are button-rifled and air-guage tested to ensure superior accuracy.

All barrels are manufactured under our ISO:9001 and AS:9100 (pending) quality certifications. We inspect each barrel over 15 times before it ever reaches you.

I am seriously looking forward to running the new Fortis Manufacturing Control Blast Mitigation Device or BMD on some of my rifles. The Control BMD is a shroud that fits over the muzzle brake to direct the blast forward which helps if you have to shoot indoors or next to people at the range. It has a really nice QD attachment system. Easy on, easy off. When you don’t need it, remove it.

At the same time, Fortis will also be introducing their new muzzle brake which looks awesome. It has a dual chamber design to help reduce recoil with an additional two ports on the top to reduce muzzle rise.

You’re probably thinking “Of course they’re releasing a muzzle device, because you have to mount the Control BMD to their muzzle brake” but that would be incorrect. Fortis has begun sharing the mounting technology with other muzzle brake manufactures in the AR industry. First to use the Fortis mount technology was Rainier Arms with their new XTC2.0 muzzle brake. This could open up the door to an unlimited number of Muzzle Device / Fortis Control BMD combinations.

According to Fortis the Control BMD will be available in about 30 days. Sounds like an early Christmas present to me! Check out the text and video below for more information.

You breach, shoot a few rounds and then can’t hear feedback from your team because you’re temporarily deaf from the concussion and blast noise from your muzzle device. The Fortis Control Blast Mitigation Device (BMD) was designed to push the noise forward for combative situations or even for simple range use, while the top ports keep the muzzle device flat on target. The patent pending quick detach system will be made available for other manufacturer’s to use in conjunction with their muzzle devices. So whether you’re knocking down doors or shooting at the range, let’s help save your hearing. So click on the Control BMD and go!

These new barrels are available in both Mid or Rifle length gas and have a really nice looking dimpled pattern from the Gas Block back. The dimples not only look really cool, they also add more surface area for faster cooling and help reduce the weight of the heavier profile barrel. The Melonite treatment protects agains corrosion, gives you a slick bore and is a very durable finish. Take a look at these barrels below, then head on over to to snag one for yourself.

PWS / Seekins Hybrid Rifle Build Details

Posted on October 12th, 2015 by ar15news

Over the years I have built a bunch of ARs. Some are not that special to me but others I have really grown to love and will be ones I will hand down to my kids as they grow up. Most of my rifles are pretty “Frankenstein’ish” So I wanted to start sharing a little bit about those special ARs. Nothing too in-depth. Just easy reading with some parts listed and a nice photo.

One such rifle is one of the first ones I would probably think of when it comes to grabbing a rifle in a SHTF situation. My PWS / Seekins Precision hybrid which I’ve had for about 4 years now has morphed into a rifle I could never see myself getting rid of.

The Seekins Precision SP223 billet lower receiver was the first part of this build that I owned. At first I wasn’t sure about the looks of the SP223 but it quickly grew on me and I had to have one. With the addition of a Wilson Combat TTU-3G trigger, Battle Arms BAD-CASS-SA-ST (Combat Ambi Safety Selector – Semi Auto – Short Throw) ambi safety, a Magpul MOE+ grip, Fortis QD End Plate and B5 Systems SOPMOD Bravo stock this lower feels complete.

The upper I can not take as much credit for its awesomeness as I did not build it. It is a Primary Weapons Systems MK114 complete upper. The MK114 consists of a 14.5″ .223 Wylde QPQ barrel, pinned FSC556 comp, PWS Long-Stroke Piston System, PWS 13″ KeyMod rail, PWS Forged Upper and a BCM Gunfighter Charging Handle.

I added to this upper a set of Magpul MBUS GenII backup sights, an Aimpoint PRO, RailScales KeyMod covers, a Zero Bravo Inc KeyMod RHS (Reversible Hand Stop) and a SureFire X300U with SR07 tape switch.

Why is this one of my favorites? Not only is it a pretty sexy looking rifle but it is an extremely reliable and solid rifle. I’ve put it up against some of my 18″ SPR type rifles and with exception of my .5″ group tack driver it shoots as good if not better than the rest. Its not a cheap setup by any means but it is definitely one I would grab in a heart beat and not have any reservation as to whether or not it could get the job done when called upon.

The requirements for assembly of our Bolt Carrier Groups are much higher than most. Before assembling the gas key to the carrier, permatex NO.3D aviation is applied to form-a-gasket around the gas hole (per MIL-SPEC). Then Grade-8 hardware is used to attach the gas key, followed by properly staking per spec. When installing the extractor to the bolt, a crane-o-ring is inserted with the spring to insure proper ejection. Then high temperature grease is applied to the gas rings before inserting the bolt into the carrier, which allows for much smoother operation. These BCGs are inspected to the highest of standards, to insure a high quality product that is 100% reliable for our customer… PROUDLY MADE IN THE USA!
