Over the weekend my friends from LANTAC sent me some pics from a video they’re currently working on which features the much anticipated LANTAC BMD, aka the Blast Mitigation Device. The BMD slides over and locks onto the LANTAC Dragon muzzle brake to redirect the blast. If you’ve seen any of the previous LANTAC videos you know that they feature amazing high speed footage and these action shots of the BMD are absolutely amazing. You can really see how well it redirects the blast forward of the shooter while still getting some of the benefits of the Dragon brake underneath through the use of vents and holes above the Dragon’s vertical ports.

I’m a huge fan of the LANTAC Dragon muzzle brake and well…basically anything LANTAC has made so far. Really looking forward to giving the BMD once it comes out. Until then, we’ll just have to drool over these awesome pics below. Look for the full HD video to come soon.

First is a shot of the blast from a LANTAC Dragon WITHOUT the BMD in place.

These next few shots show the BMD in action on a couple of different ARs. You can easily see that it makes quite a difference in reducing the side blast.

Initial Impressions – SCALARWORKS LDM/MICRO Mount

Posted on May 9th, 2015 by ar15news

A while back I helped introduce the SCALARWORKS LDM/Micro mount for Aimpoint T-1/H-1 red dots. They have been a very popular mount since then and now I’m excited to actually get to try one out for myself. I’ve had the Absolute Co-Witness mount on my SBR for about a week now and wanted to give my initial impressions with a long term review down the road.

The LDM/Micro mount was designed to be a low profile and light weight QD mount. The Absolute Co-Witness mount weighs just 1.25 ounces which is extremely impressive, especially for a QD mount. You can immediately tell when holding it that its quite a bit lighter than most mounts. For instance one of my other favorites, the ADM Micro Mount weighs 3.7 ounces (according to the ADM website) which is about 3 times what the SCALARWORKS LDM/Micro mount weighs.

The fit and finish on the LDM/Micro mount was also very nice. No sharp points or inconsistent anodizing at all. Just a very clean, high quality look. Another thing I noticed was that the anodizing seemed to match up color wise to my Aimpoint T-1 which at a quick glance makes it look like a one-piece Optic/Mount setup. The design itself I think is very attractive.

Installation is very simple. The QD wheel on the LDM/Micro mount features very positive clicks as you turn it that help lock it in place not allowing it to unwind by itself. It also makes it extremely easy to install or remove if needed. Once tightened down by hand it is extremely solid and has zero wobble or movement to it.

Scalarworks LDM Micro Mount 1

The LDM/Micro mount uses a telescoping guided clamp that is the entire length of the mount which should help it hold zero very well and is something they talk about in their marketing. This is one feature I have not had any time to test out but will very soon. Just a matter of shooting a group, removing the mount, re-installing the mount and shooting another group, repeat!

Scalarworks LDM Micro Mount 1

So my initial impressions are very good. I am looking forward to using the LDM/Micro mount full time on my SBR this year. Pricing on the SCALARWORKS LDM/Micro mount is a bit higher than some of the other mounts on the market but I think the quality and lightweight/low drag aspect of it makes up for that very fast.

One thing to note is that the LDM/Micro mount does not come with screws and requires that you use your “factory” screws. If you are like me and bought a T-1 with something other than the factory low mount you will probably need different screws. My T-1 came with the Factory LRP QD mount which has really long screws. Thankfully I had some screws from a different mount that I was able to use. This is not a problem, just something to keep in mind, when purchasing you might want to contact Aimpoint to purchase a new set of screws.

It just so happens that the same week SCALARWORKS sent me my mount, they also sent Rainier Arms a shipment of both Absolute Co-Witness and Lower 1/3 Co-Witness mounts. If you’re looking for a great place to purchase one from, head on over to www.RainierArms.com.

Underground Tactical Arms is introducing their new Enhanced Takedown Pin Set. These new Takedown Pins from Underground Tactical feature a series of grooves machined into the heads of the pins that let you use the rim of a 5.56 casing to pull them out if they are tight. If you have owned more then one AR you have probably dealt with the common issue of extremely tight takedown pins between some upper and lower receivers. Some times you can push them partially out with the tip of a bullet but some are really stubborn and need a little extra help. Some companies resort to extending the length of the pins and making a head that you can pull on but they can get in the way of using safety selectors, etc.

Underground Tactical Takedown PinsProduction units will be Black. Shown here before coating.

Underground Tactical Arms will be producing these for both AR15 and AR10 at $14.99 and $19.99 respectively. As far as we know the launch date will be in about two weeks at which time they will be available for sale at www.UndergroundTactical.com. We’ll be sure to post this again as soon as they are available for sale.

NEW!! TacStrike Target Carrier Solution – The Cerberus

Posted on May 1st, 2015 by ar15news

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen guys stapling targets to this flimsy, make shift target carrier that always seems to fall apart after being shot or just blown around by the wind. Then there are the guys who need to bring all of their power tools and build a target carrier that is so over built that it could be later outfitted as some sort of medieval trebuchet. Either way, both of those guys spent an excessive amount of time building or repairing their Target Carrier when they should have been shooting.

Nobody knows this scenario better than Rob of TacStrike. Rob has been a very well known instructor for years now and also builds some of the best steel targets and target carriers on the market. Today Rob is introducing a new product that is so simple yet so smart. You’ll never need to build a target carrier again.

Rob’s new target carrier design utilizes 3 pieces of square steel tubing that is welded together to create each leg of the target base. You simply rip a 2×4 in half, cut the two “feet” to the length you want them, cut the center post to the length you need to accommodate the target you will be shooting and then insert the uprights and you’re ready to shoot. All of the pieces are held in place using thumb screws so you don’t need any tools to assemble or disassemble the carrier.

TacStrike Target Carrier 1

TacStrike Target Carrier 3

This new target carrier is also adaptable in that it can change to accommodate any size target you want to attach to the uprights by simply adjusting the width of the center post. Another thing to note is that if its windy out that day, you can cut the “feet” of the carrier a bit longer to make it harder to blow over.

TacStrike Target Carrier 3

One of the best parts about a super simple design is that it usually comes with a super simple price tag. TacStrike will be selling these as a pair for $21.95 plus $6 shipping anywhere in the lower 48. Now that is an affordable modular target carrier. Check them out now at www.TacStrike.com.

Fortis Mfg Introduces the New REV II Rail with M-LOK

Posted on April 29th, 2015 by ar15news

**Update** – Fortis just released the first run of REV II M-LOK rails on www.REVOLVR.com. 4-29-15 3pm EST.

Back in January we broke the news that Fortis Mfg was introducing a new version of the original REV rail called the REV II. Now we are here to spill the beans on the newest version of the REV II which now features M-LOK. As you may already know, M-LOK is a mounting system that is being heavily promoted and backed by Magpul. This means that all of their cool new grips, light mounts, rail panels, etc. will have an M-LOK option and explains why everybody wants an M-LOK rail.

Fortis REV II MLOK 1

Fortis REV II MLOK 2

Then new REV II M-LOK rail continues with the same design characteristics of the REV II KeyMod rail in that it mounts directly to a mil spec barrel nut, features a full run of M-LOK at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock, offers 2 QD sling attachment points at 3 and 6 o’clock at the very front of the rail as well as two more in the same spot at the rear of the rail. As you’ve probably already seen, Fortis is well known for their aggressive styling and the new REV II M-LOK rail definitely fits in that statement.

The combination of the super lightweight yet rugged design of the REV II and the M-LOK mounting system means this will be another home run rail system for Fortis Mfg. The REV II M-LOK rail has not been released for purchase yet but you can sign up to be notified the moment it is. Just head on over and enter your email address at www.FortisMfg.com.
