If you’ve followed AR15NEWS for any decent length of time you’ve probably noticed we build lots of ARs. Some times, as an AR builder, it’s easy to get in a rut and kind of build the same thing over and over again which gets boring. All it takes is a bit of imagination and planning and your next build can be the best one you’ve ever put together. This is the very case with my most recent build.

Believe it or not I had SBR’d this Rainier Arms forged lower well over a year ago but had no idea what I wanted to do with it. Then it came to me and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. From there it was just a matter of time before I had the parts in hand and ready to build.

Lets start out with a few closer shots. From this angle you can see the Rainier Arms ambi safety, Juggernaut Tactical ambi charging handle and Scalarworks OPS (On Point Sights) fixed rear sight.

Rainier Arms SBR Build 1 - Scalarworks OPS Fixed Sights Juggernaut Tactical Ambi Charging Handle - Rainier Arms Ambi Safety

As I mentioned above, this build got started as a Rainier Arms Forged A-DAC lower that I bought and Form 1’d just before the ATF41P effective date. I added a Rainier Arms forged upper and ambi safety, CMC Triggers Flat 3.5lb Trigger and LPK, Superlative Arms Piston Kit, Juggernaut Tactical ambi charging handle, Geissele MK4 rail and Scalarworks OPS Fixed Sights and Low Drag Mount for the Aimpoint T1 and a SureFeed Magazines 20 Round mag.

Rainier Arms SBR Build 2 - CMC Triggers Flat Trigger Geissele SMR MK4 rail Scalarworks OPS Fixed Sights Aimpoint Micro T1 Rainier Arms A-DAC

Of course as a Rainier Arms SBR build I chose to use their 10.5″ .223 Wylde barrel. Covered it with a Geissele MK4 rail, Arisaka Defense 300/IR Series Scout Light and Inline Scout Mount, SureFire SR07 switch, Scalarworks OPS Fixed Front Sight, Magpul vertical grip and Griffin Armament Taper Mount Supresspr Mount. The Superlative Arms Piston Kit gas block is under there somewhere. 😜

Rainier Arms SBR Build - Geissele SMR MK4 - Arisaka Inline Scout Light Mount 300 Series Scalarworks OPS Front Fixed Sight magpul vertical grip Surefire SR07

Here’s another angle of the business end on the new Rainier Arms SBR build. From this angle you can now see how accessible the Superlative Arms Piston Kit gas block is under the rail. This isn’t like many piston kits were you have one or two settings. Its more like a Piston Kit that has a built in fully adjustable gas block so you can really tune it in.

Rainier Arms SBR Build - Superlative Arms - Rainier Arms - Geissele - Scalarworks - Magpul = Arisaka Rainier Arms

This next shot gives you a better idea of how tidy things are on this build. It’s got everything I need and nothing I don’t. The Scalarworks OPS fixed sights and mount for the Aimpoint T1 are absolutely amazing.

Rainier Arms SBR Build - rainier arms = cmc triggers = scalarworks = aimpoint t1 - juggernaut tactical - magpul - geissele

And here it is. Hope you guys enjoyed a pretty detailed look at my new Rainier Arms SBR build. In the end, this SBR turned out even better than I had pictured it but the initial imagination and passion to create another gun is what got it all started. Don’t be in too much of a hurry to just slap together the first complete rifle you can. Take your time with your next build, map it out, think about what would make you smile every time you see it and then build that.

Rainier Arms SBR Build - rainier arms - geissele - cmc triggers - magpul - scalarworks - griffin armament - surefire = superlative arms piston kit - aimpoint juggernaut tactical

Here’s the full run down of parts for this build. If you want to copy it, be my guest. Would make for a great AR Pistol build too.

Already had a chance to get the gas dialed in on the piston kit and man this thing is smooth. Will be getting some range time this week with this gun getting it sighted in. Will let you guys know how it runs soon.

The other day I was given the opportunity to run some rounds through the new KAK Industry .308 Nitride BCG with Dual Ejectors. Dual Ejectors are not brand new but I have never personally used a BCG in any caliber with this setup and wanted to figure out what it could do different than my standard BCGs. So here is how I tested out the new KAK Industry Dual Ejector .308 BCG.

KAK 308 Dual Ejector BCG 7

KAK 308 Dual Ejector BCG 6

I have a bunch of linked (for Belt Fed) .308 SWAT SSA ammo that I bought a while back to shoot. This stuff ended up being pretty much junk. Basically I would remove it from the links, load it up in my Magpul LR-20 mags and try to run it through both of my .308 ARs. No matter what I did, every single shot would result in a failure to eject. Not sure if it was just too dirty ( which it was quite dirty) or what but neither of my .308s could run it.

KAK 308 Dual Ejector BCG 6

So yesterday I unlinked a bunch of the .308 SWAT SSA and set it aside. I then grabbed some 149gr Federal XM80CL which always runs perfect and loaded up some mags.

KAK 308 Dual Ejector BCG 6

I had already tuned this guns adjustable gas block but I wanted a fresh slate, so to start I shut my SLR Rifleworks adjustable gas block OFF. Started shooting the Federal and gradually opened it up until it was just enough to eject the Federal ammo and hold the bolt open on the last round. I had it right where it should be and not over gassed so it would be a great test when we switched to the crap .308 SWAT SSA ammo.

Grabbed two mags of the .308 SWAT SSA ammo which has NEVER run right in any of my .308s. Left the adjustable gas block right where it was using my standard BCG. Sure enough, first 5 shots were failure to eject. I figured I knew where this was going so it was time to swap out the BCG and use the KAK Industry Dual Ejector BCG. proceeded to fire off 35 straight rounds of the .308 SWAT SSA without a single malfunction. No changes were made except for the BCG swap. The dual ejector setup is the only thing that could have made a huge difference from what I can tell.

When I set out to shoot this rifle yesterday, I wasn’t sure exactly what the outcome would be. There was a chance that nothing would change but after successfully shooting  ammo that I was previously unable to due to Failure To Extract, I am sold!

This BCG features a fully machined Extractor and Gas Key. No MIM parts on this thing at all. The Bolt is 9310 and the carrier is 8620 with a Black Nitride (Melonite, QPQ, etc. All the same thing.) finish inside and out for superior corrosion resistance and lubricity. The Carrier itself has the facetted cuts, forward assist serrations and a correct auto sear trip location (for you lucky guys with an SOT). The Bolt features the dual Ejector setup, is MP tested and marked and the fully machined extractor also has a rubber o-ring helper to ensure reliable extraction.

At just $180, I don’t know you will find a better deal anywhere. You can head on over to www.KAKIndustry.com and get on their email notification list so you can snag one of these as soon as they become available.

SLR Rifleworks make some extremely nice Rails and Gas Blocks which are now on sale for Labor Day. Starting now through Monday (9/7/15) save 10% off on all 5.56 Rails and Gas Blocks and 15% off all .308 Rails. POF-USA RELEASES A 9-POSITION ADJUSTABLE, DIRECT IMPINGEMENT, LOW PROFILE GAS BLOCK.

PHOENIX, AZ (June 2015) – With suppressor ownership at an all-time high, there have been new requirements presented to achieve ultimate reliability. Each suppressor creates its own back pressures, which in turn makes the AR15 style rifle increase or decrease its speed. If the rifle is running too fast or too slow, the rifle has a higher chance of malfunction and/or exposure to increased component stress/wear.

Introducing the problem solver. The DIctator adjustable gas block gives the end user 9 different gas positions to fine tune their rifle system for whatever variable has been introduced ranging from a suppressor to different ammunition types. With a simple testing and tuning process (instructions provided in packaging), the DIctator will give the operator the knowledge to keep his/her rifle running at a consistent speed.

Modern handguards have continued to get longer and thinner, which proves to be effective when combined with modern shooting techniques. This fact was in our minds the entire time while designing The DIctator. This new gas block will fit under rail systems with an ID of 1 3/8”. The initial models offered will be gas blocks set up for .750” barrels in both a mid-length and carbine position gas system. Each DIctator gas block comes with a stainless steel straight gas tube installed and a specifically designed tool to allow the user complete adjustment without the possibility of getting burned by a hot gas block during the tuning process.

You guys know I am always on the look out for some crazy deal to help you guys get in on and this Adams Arms rifle sale is about as crazy as it gets. Adams Arms is one of the first names you think of when someone mentions Piston Driven ARs. They’ve been making quality, hard working piston ARs for years and have a great reputation. With new rifles coming in every day, Rainier Arms has found themselves with a few too many of two specific Adams Arms complete rifle models which means only one thing….you get to save some big money. And these aren’t base model rifles either. The two models are the Carbine Length Tactical Elite 16″ and the Mid Length Tactical Evo 16″ which both come with upgraded Stocks, Grips and Rail Systems. Both rifles have an MSRP of around $1,300 but you can snag one now for just $800. Not only that but if you act fast enough they are throwing in a set of fixed metal sights too. Click on the image or link below to view that rifle on RA’s website.

Patriot Ordnance Factory recently introduced their new Puritan 7.62×39 chambered piston AR. Some might yawn and say “Get an AK” but what makes this exciting is that POF has worked some magic and says it is capable of Sub-MOA accuracy with the right ammo. Don’t worry though, cheap steel case ammo was shooting 1.2 – 1.5 MOA. Do that with your AK!

POF Puritan 762x39 2

I spoke to Jaryd at POF yesterday regarding the new Puritan 7.62×39 rifle and here is what he had to say.

“Our goal was to produce a 1 MOA capable 7.62x39mm rifle and we hit our mark. With the Hornady 123gr SST ammo, we shot multiple rifles with results under 1 MOA, the best group being a .73 (sub ¾ MOA). Now, the rifle functions very well with Wolf and other steel case, low end ammo printing groups of  1.2-1.5 MOA (still nothing to shake a stick at when you consider the average AK-47). This rifle features all the same upgrades as our 5.56 Puritan including a single stage 4.5lb drop in trigger with KNS anti-walk pins, NP3 coated BCG, roller cam pin assembly, 3 position short stroke adjustable gas piston, nitride heat treated barrel and anti-tilt buffer tube. We take no shortcuts.”  –  Jaryd B., POF Inside Sales

POF Puritan 762x39 2

Another cool thing we found out in talking to Jaryd was the MSRP. Usually when you hear the high end name “Patriot Ordnance Factory” you can hear your wallet crying but the POF Puritan 7.62×39 rifle will have an MSRP of just $1,469.99. That is an awesome price considering its a piston-driven 7.62×39 rifle from POF.

A lot of guys will say they can’t get their home-built 7.62×39 chambered AR’s to function correctly but that just means you haven’t put in the time to figure out what works best. I have a 7.62×39 11″ AR Pistol that runs like a sewing machine and I’m sure POF has done their homework to ensure a great running rifle.

Whether you’re looking for a great hunting rifle or a rifle that can reliably and accurately put a dent in your stockpile of cheap 7.62×39 ammo, the new POF Puritan rifle is a great place to start your search.

Just today Faxon Firearms announced it will be replacing their Left Hand ARAK-21 uppers with their new Ambi Ejection Port Window Uppers. Basically that means that all uppers from here on out will all have the ambi window which will allow you to choose between left or right hand eject just based on your mood that day. To switch between left and right hand eject, all you need to do is remove the BCG from your ARAK-21 upper, take out the bolt, rotate the bolt 180 degrees and re-install the bolt and BCG. Faxon Firearms will have bolt on covers that you can install if you want to close off the side of the receiver you are not using. If you currently have an ARAK-21 upper on order with them you can call in and ask them to make sure yours will have the Ambi Ejection Port Window. Another nice thing is that the new feature will not change the standard pricing at all.

Over the past few months we’ve had the opportunity to work with the guys from SI-Defense in helping spread the word about their new products including their new .308 billet receiver set that features “mirrored ambi controls”. Remember that term as you’ll see what we mean soon. Now that the .308 Ambi receiver sets are hot off the machines, SI-Defense asked if we would want to build our own rifle using these receivers…and of course we’re not gonna turn that down. 🙂 So this is the start to our multipart article showing the rifle we built, what parts we used and then we’ll do additional articles once we’ve actually had some time to shoot it for a while.

The first thing that arrived were the SI-Defense .308 Ambi billet receivers. The mirrored ambi controls on the receivers are pretty mind blowing. When you push on the Bolt Catch, Bolt Release or Mag Release on one side the same button on the other side moves as well. It really is pretty amazing that the ambi controls are mirrored and not just an added lever that is completely different than the control on the right side. The dust cover is pretty cool too in that it is easy to remove/install even with the handguard installed because it snaps into place.

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1

A few months ago Rainier Arms introduced their new .308 UltraMatch BCG. Once I knew this build was going down I promptly went on the Rainier Arms website and purchased one. The finish on this thing is a really nice deep Black Nitride that is super smooth. The angled cuts toward the front and fluting at the rear of the carrier look pretty sweet.

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1

If you’re gonna build a gun you definitely need a barrel, right?! Right. I’ve posted about AERO Precision barrels many many times before whenever they have a new model to introduce or a special deal etc. but have never personally used one myself. So for this build I contacted my buddy Chad over at AERO Precision to see if I could get my hands on one of their 16″ Mid Length .308 barrels. They are made of 416 Stainless Steel and I’m really excited to see how well they perform. You might be thinking “A 16 inch .308 build? Most guys do 18 inches or more.” and you’re right but I just built an 18″ like everyone else and wanted do something a bit different. Because I know big bore rifles can be a bit ornery I installed a SLR Rifleworks Sentry Adjustable Low Profile Gas Block along with the Rainier Arms Nitride Mid Length gas tube.

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1

Along with the SLR Rifleworks Sentry Adjustable Gas Block, I also used the SLR Rifleworks SOLO 15″ KeyMod handguard, Hand Stop and their Synergy BCF muzzle device. It truly makes for one killer looking setup and can’t wait to see how well it performs.

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 10

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1

Along with making some pretty amazing ambi receivers, SI-Defense also makes a mean looking ambi charging handle called the MACH10 which stands for Modular Ambi Charging Handle for AR10. This specific one has a neat feature where it latches on the inside of the receiver but they will also offer an outside latching MACH10 and a MACH15 charging handle as well.

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1

As with all of my builds this one includes a Battle Arms Development Ambi Safety. I don’t own a single AR that does not have one and no I don’t get them for free. Its one of those products that I have honestly grown to love and buy them for every build.

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1

Along with upgrading the Safety I also upgraded the Trigger. I usually use either a Geissele or CMC Trigger and decided to try the Geissele S3G trigger in this build. The S3G is not really designed for a rifle with higher recoil as it has a very light trigger pull and could bump-fire easily so I used the heavier spring that comes with it. This is kind of a trial run and will be interesting to see how it performs in a .308.

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1 SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1

Oooohhhh. Look at that sexy beast!! I also added a Trijicon VCOG, Magpul MBUS PRO sights, UBR stock and a MOE+ grip to finish off the build. I think it turned out to be an one of the best looking rifles I’ve built.

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1

These pics are hot off the press as I just finished this build over the weekend. This week will be its maiden voyage to see how well she runs and get the gas system all dialed in. Will update you with an additional article detailing its performance at the range and hopefully some 100 yard groups. If we don’t get accuracy data on the .308 AERO Precision barrel for that article it will be in an additional one for sure. Below is a list of links for the parts we used in this build.

SLR Rifleworks has just introduced their new premium adjustable gas block called the SENTRY. The SENTRY series of adjustable gas blocks are Smaller and Lighter that most if not all other adjustable gas blocks and will work with ANY AR15/AR10 handguard on the market today. I’ve actually used an older SLR Rifleworks adjustable gas block in the past and it was nice back then. These look even nicer and feature some great upgrades such as cutouts on the sides for weight savings and high end materials and manufacturing. They are also available in both Set Screw and Clamp On styles as well as sized for .750 or .936 gas block seats with additional sizes to come. Adjustable Gas Blocks are SLR Rifleworks specialty and it shows in their new SENTRY series.

– 100% Lifetime Guarantee

Below is some additional information from Todd, the owner of SLR Rifleworks.

The Sentry series are super low profile allowing AR15/AR10 use under pure tube HG’s. Those types of HG’s are super popular today so meeting that target was a no brainer. The Ti leaf spring allows more spring pressure for even more positive engagement along with total corrosion resistance. Getting rid of the coiled spring and ball is huge when looking at years and years of use. It relatively huge in comparison to a coiled spring as well.

The single screw on the side allows the entire gas block to be dissembled in less time than it takes to type this sentence. Total disassembly is nice if you go for 2 years without cleaning your rifle or you shoot a bunch of .22LR though it like i do.

The SS plunger under the leaf spring floats but is captured from totally bottoming out in the adjustment screw slots. This allows carbon to pass through without building up and also allows the adj screw to be removed without fear of losing the plunger.

The adjustment screw has been refined with a proprietary threading and shape allowing the same 100% gas seal at closed and even better fouling resistance. This is the heart of the block and the toughest to get right when making the blocks/screws in the thousands.

We have tried multiple surface treatments, materials over the years. What we spec in production gives the best mix of reliability, production consistency and overall cost.

That’s a very small look at the endless hours trying to make the perfect wide range adjustable gas block.
