Now Available!! American Defense Mfg UIC Ambi Billet Lower

Posted on February 19th, 2015 by ar15news

American Defense Manufacturing is probably best known for making some really awesome quick detach optic mounts but they really blew people away last year when they introduced their new UIC or Universally Improved Carbine. The UIC was the product of redesigning any aspect of your run of the mill AR that they felt didn’t meet ADM standards to make a rifle that is “Intentionally Superior”. One of the areas that ADM focused a lot of attention to was the lower receiver.

Not only did they want to make the UIC 5.56 lower look good but they also made it function better. The ADM UIC lower is fully ambidextrous with an Ambi Bolt Catch and Bolt Release as well as an Ambi Magazine Release. They also will work with any Ambi Safety Selector including the Short Throw models that are very popular. The mag well of the lower features a familiar design that ADM calls “reinforcing ribs” that not only look pretty sweet but also make the receiver stronger. People have been asking them to offer the UIC lower stripped so they can add it to their current rifle or start a build specifically around the lower so that is what ADM just did. Starting now, you can purchase the ADM UIC billet ambi lower as a stripped lower. Check out the pictures of it and details below then head on over to www.AmericanDefenseManufacturing.com to purchase one for yourself.

ADM UIC Billet Ambi Lower 2ADM UIC Billet Ambi Lower 2

The attractive, billet 7075-T6 lower receiver is outfitted with an ambidextrous magazine release, bolt catch and release, and selector switch.  The magazine well features reinforcing ribs that make the magazine well 40% stronger than mil-spec forged at only ½ an ounce of weight change.  The trigger guard is ready for winter gloves without manipulation. Radii and chamfers throughout make this billet lower a marvel that stretches the capabilities of modern production CNC manufacturing. A 20 degree competition style mag well is concealed in the design, allowing lightning fast magazine changes. A right side bolt catch and release lever is standard for every UIC lower, a feature not found on many comparable industry offerings. An integral adjuster allows the end user to compensate for tolerance between your upper receivers and your favorite lower. The selector pictogram is compatible with 50-90 degree selectors.

First Look – SI Defense .308 Ambi Rifle Build

Posted on February 17th, 2015 by ar15news

Over the past few months we’ve had the opportunity to work with the guys from SI-Defense in helping spread the word about their new products including their new .308 billet receiver set that features “mirrored ambi controls”. Remember that term as you’ll see what we mean soon. Now that the .308 Ambi receiver sets are hot off the machines, SI-Defense asked if we would want to build our own rifle using these receivers…and of course we’re not gonna turn that down. :) So this is the start to our multipart article showing the rifle we built, what parts we used and then we’ll do additional articles once we’ve actually had some time to shoot it for a while.

The first thing that arrived were the SI-Defense .308 Ambi billet receivers. The mirrored ambi controls on the receivers are pretty mind blowing. When you push on the Bolt Catch, Bolt Release or Mag Release on one side the same button on the other side moves as well. It really is pretty amazing that the ambi controls are mirrored and not just an added lever that is completely different than the control on the right side. The dust cover is pretty cool too in that it is easy to remove/install even with the handguard installed because it snaps into place.

A few months ago Rainier Arms introduced their new .308 UltraMatch BCG. Once I knew this build was going down I promptly went on the Rainier Arms website and purchased one. The finish on this thing is a really nice deep Black Nitride that is super smooth. The angled cuts toward the front and fluting at the rear of the carrier look pretty sweet.

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1

If you’re gonna build a gun you definitely need a barrel, right?! Right. I’ve posted about AERO Precision barrels many many times before whenever they have a new model to introduce or a special deal etc. but have never personally used one myself. So for this build I contacted my buddy Chad over at AERO Precision to see if I could get my hands on one of their 16″ Mid Length .308 barrels. They are made of 416 Stainless Steel and I’m really excited to see how well they perform. You might be thinking “A 16 inch .308 build? Most guys do 18 inches or more.” and you’re right but I just built an 18″ like everyone else and wanted do something a bit different. Because I know big bore rifles can be a bit ornery I installed a SLR Rifleworks Sentry Adjustable Low Profile Gas Block along with the Rainier Arms Nitride Mid Length gas tube.

Along with the SLR Rifleworks Sentry Adjustable Gas Block, I also used the SLR Rifleworks SOLO 15″ KeyMod handguard, Hand Stop and their Synergy BCF muzzle device. It truly makes for one killer looking setup and can’t wait to see how well it performs.

Along with making some pretty amazing ambi receivers, SI-Defense also makes a mean looking ambi charging handle called the MACH10 which stands for Modular Ambi Charging Handle for AR10. This specific one has a neat feature where it latches on the inside of the receiver but they will also offer an outside latching MACH10 and a MACH15 charging handle as well.

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1

As with all of my builds this one includes a Battle Arms Development Ambi Safety. I don’t own a single AR that does not have one and no I don’t get them for free. Its one of those products that I have honestly grown to love and buy them for every build.

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1

Along with upgrading the Safety I also upgraded the Trigger. I usually use either a Geissele or CMC Trigger and decided to try the Geissele S3G trigger in this build. The S3G is not really designed for a rifle with higher recoil as it has a very light trigger pull and could bump-fire easily so I used the heavier spring that comes with it. This is kind of a trial run and will be interesting to see how it performs in a .308.

Oooohhhh. Look at that sexy beast!! I also added a Trijicon VCOG, Magpul MBUS PRO sights, UBR stock and a MOE+ grip to finish off the build. I think it turned out to be an one of the best looking rifles I’ve built.

These pics are hot off the press as I just finished this build over the weekend. This week will be its maiden voyage to see how well she runs and get the gas system all dialed in. Will update you with an additional article detailing its performance at the range and hopefully some 100 yard groups. If we don’t get accuracy data on the .308 AERO Precision barrel for that article it will be in an additional one for sure. Below is a list of links for the parts we used in this build.

For weeks…no months now, everyone has been asking “When can I buy that awesome CMT Tactical Ambi lower?”. Well, your wait is now over. Just yesterday CMT Tactical announced that they had opened sales for the new UHP15A ambi receiver. I’ve had my set for a while now and they really work great. The bolt release works just as you imagine, press the lever and it releases the bolt. The mag release is gated to protect agains accidental mag release but can still be actuated by the flat of your trigger finger, etc.

CMT Tactical UHP15A Ambi Lower 3

As with all of the different billet receivers CMT Tactical makes, the fit, finish and overall quality of the UHP15A is top tier and features a completely “roll-pin-less” assembly. The UHP15A ambi lowers are now available for purchase as just the UHP15A ambi receiver alone or in Upper and Lower Combo sets and will soon be available through RainierArm.com and AimSurplus.com.

Looks like the G10 version will be available for purchase starting this coming Friday (2/6/15) with the Aluminum and Titanium versions to follow. At first they will only be available in KeyMod with M-LOK versions to come soon. Apparently they will also fit the War Sport LVOA rail by removing the KeyMod nut and screwing it directly to the rail. Pics, Pricing and details for the RailScales S³ Handstops are listed below. These will be available for purchase on www.GetRailScales.com.

Finally!!! Our S³ handstops are ready for purchase. The G10 versions will be available first, on the website late next week. Aluminum and Ti will be available the following week. Pricing and weights! The S³ retail pricing will be $69 for G10 or Aluminum, take your pick. The Serialized Titanium price will be announced in the coming days, it will include some extra goodies, watch for the detailed post.

Weights G10 – 0.6oz
Aluminum (6061) – 0.8oz
Titanium (6AL4V) – 1.3oz

After a long deliberation we decided to offer the Aluminum in the raw (sandblasted), leaving you to decide how to finish it. We have spent a lot time talking with friends, customers, etc as to what color, hard coat, paint, cerakote etc to offer, and about every response was something different. The Sand colored one was cerakoted and has held up nicely. In the future we might do a couple of anodized colors, Black and FDE. But we want to wait to get feedback from those that purchase to ultimately decide. We will be posting more details on each of the materials in the coming days as well as a comparison chart, showing how they stack up against each other.

Faxon ARAK-21 Available In 7.62×39 and New 3-Barrel-Combo

Posted on January 28th, 2015 by ar15news

Faxon Firearms just opened up ordering of their ARAK-21 uppers in 7.62×39 which everyone has been anxiously waiting for. Many AR’s chambered in 7.62×39 can have feeding issues but Faxon’s design completely eliminates that issue no matter what mag you use, etc. You can see their video explanation of this system HERE. Pair the reliability of the ARAK-21 system with the power and affordability of the 7.62×39 round and you’ve got an awesome setup.

Now lets take this one step further and talk about that fact that you can easily swap barrels with the ARAK-21 upper using their BAUs or Barrel Assembly Units and you can imagine how this upper can help your rifle adapt to just about any scenario you may come across. Faxon Firearms has always offered a Two Barrel Combo but have just introduced the new Three Barrel Combo. With the Three Barrel Combo you can mix and match three BAUs giving you endless combination options. For instance you could do a 20″ 5.56, 16″ 300BLK and 12.5″ 7.62×39 or any other combination of BAUs that would work best for you.

SHOT Show 2015 – SI Defense

Posted on January 21st, 2015 by ar15news

One of the biggest surprises of late 2014 was the explosion of SI Defense onto the scene. SI Defense has been around for quite some time but they came out with their new Ambi .308 billet receivers with “mirrored” ambi controls and these things are amazing. I actually just saw a picture of the new 5.56 billet set with the exact same ambi controls and can’t wait for its release as well. No video to share on this one but here are a few photos of Steve shooting the SI Defense .308 rifle during the industry range day at SHOT Show 2015.

SHOT Show 2015 – Faxon Firearms

Posted on January 21st, 2015 by ar15news

Faxon Firearms has some awesome new stuff coming out this year including their new .308 rifle called the ARAK-31. The ARAK-31 is a fully ambidextrous rifle where you can even switch between left or right ejection. They also will be releasing a new 7.62×39 version of the ARAK-21 upper which should be another great addition to the lineup. Steve Coulston interviewed the man behind the curtain at Faxon Firearms, Bob Faxon, who shows off some of their newest products.

You can follow all things Faxon Firearms on Facebook and at www.FaxonFirearms.com.

For a while now the main thing that has been missing from the whole KeyMod and M-LOK rail push is companies that were willing to create direct mount products for these systems…and that is understandable when you think about how fast this industry moves from one new solution to another. Look how fast M-LOK has taken off because its backed by Magpul. Up until now most companies have been making adapters for existing products such rail sections that allow you to attach a 1913 picatinny product, a light ring for adding a light, etc. This mindset kind of goes against the whole “new attachment method” thought process which should create products that attach directly to the rail without the need for adapters thus reducing weight, cost, etc.

Well, today I am proud to announce a new partnership between two very respected companies in the industry that have come together to create an amazing new product. Elzetta Design, makers of the toughest and highest quality flashlights known to man and Impact Weapons Components, one of the most innovative Mount and Accessory manufacturers have partnered up together to introduce the new MINICQB which combines their new ALPHA light and IWC’s modular light mounts into a weapon light. This is a true “Direct Attach” Weapon Light.

IWC Elzetta MINICQB 1

The new MINICQB Weapon Light features all of the same specs as the original Elzetta ALPHA single cell flashlight including 315 lumen output from a single CR123 battery and Elzetta’s Momentary, twist on tailcap with the others tailcap options available. The ALPHA is designed specifically as a CQB or Close Quarters Battle light producing a “wall of light” intended for room clearing and close encounters within 50 yards. The proven IWC mount arm is machined from the same piece of billet aluminum as the light body itself making a much stronger union than using the typical adapter style mount.

IWC Elzetta MINICQB 1

Now this is where things get REALLY interesting. The MINICQB incorporates Impact Weapons Components new KML mount technology which basically means Keymod & M-LOK compatible. That’s right. No longer do you have to decide “Do I buy this for my KeyMod rail or should I go with the M-LOK version for my new M-LOK rail?”. This KML system is awesome. I’ve attached the MINICQB on both a Geissele SMR MK8 M-LOK rail and on my Rainier Arms FORCE Mod2 KeyMod rail (shown below) and it works amazingly well. To switch between KeyMod and M-LOK you just simply unthread the reversible nuts, turn them around and thread them back on. The MINICQB will also be available with a 1913 Picatinny Rail Mount as well.

IWC Elzetta MINICQB 1

To give you some comparison information, the MINICQB Picatinny version weighs just 4.5oz and the KML (KeyMod / M-LOK) version weighs just 4.7oz. A SureFire M300 without a mount weighs 4.8oz and an Inforce WML without KeyMod or M-LOK adapter weighs 3.1oz.

I’ve had my MINICQB for about 5 days now and am super impressed with it. The direct attachment makes it feel as if the Light is actually part of the weapon instead of an added on piece. The design of the mount keeps the light very close to the rail for a nice low profile design. Having an Elzetta flashlight with the IWC KML mounting technology is about as awesome as it gets.

IWC Elzetta MINICQB 1

IWC Elzetta MINICQB 1

The pricing for the new MINICQB is very reasonable as well with the 1913 rail mount version retailing at just $205 and the KML M-LOK / KeyMod mount version retailing for just $230. Once you purchase your MINICQB you will also be able to purchase the hardware for the other mount style. So if you buy the KML version you can purchase the 1913 cap and screws to give you a truly universal mounting system.

The new MINICQB Flashlight should be available today at www.ImpactWeaponsComponents.com. Don’t forget that you can use the code “AR15NEWS” at checkout to save yourself 5% off your order.
