NEW!! Fortis Mfg Releases New Aimpoint Mount and Light Mount

Posted on August 28th, 2014 by ar15news

Fortis Manufacturing quietly introduced two new products this week. One is a new version of their awesome F-1 Optics Mount (Aimpoint T-1/H-1 Mount) and the other is a new KeyMod Light Mount. I’ve included pics and details for both new products below.

The Fortis Manufacturing F-1 Optics Mount is one of the cooler looking mounts designed for the Aimpoint T-1/H-1 optic and is now being offered in an Absolute Co-Witness mount height. People have always been asking for an Absolute Co-Witness version of the F-1 Optics Mount which was a Lower 1/3 Co-Witness Mount. Lower 1/3 Co-Witness and Absolute Co-Witness refer to where your Iron Sights line up in relation to the Red Dot. A Lower 1/3 Co-Witness mount is a bit taller so your Iron Sights will be in the lower portion of your optic with the Red Dot just above. With an Absolute Co-Witness mount your Red Dot and Iron Sight will line up together. Having an Absolute Co-Witness mount has its advantages such as being able to sight in your rifle with just your Iron Sights and then line your Red Dot up with them for quick sight-in.

Fortis Mfg also just introduced a new KeyMod Light Mount. This light mount is designed to fit most flashlights with a 1″ body such as the Elzetta Design lights, most SureFire lights, etc. As I mentioned, this is a KeyMod mount and will work with any KeyMod rail. The design of this light mount pushes the position of the flashlight up and forward which makes it much easier to activate the light without having to move your support hand much and also gives you a bit more room on the rail for your hands or other accessories.

Fortis Mfg prides themselves on producing American Made, high quality, affordable AR-15 accessories and components and these products are exactly that. Both products are available for purchase now at the links I’ve supplied below.

Sneak Peek!! CMT Tactical Left Side Eject Billet Upper

Posted on August 18th, 2014 by ar15news

CMT Tactical has really been cranking out new products lately and I don’t think they have any plans to slow down. Here’s a little sneak peek at a project they are working on right now. CMT Tactical just prototyped their first Lefty version of their awesome billet UPUR upper. The best part is it doesn’t look like an afterthought like most left hand eject uppers. It features a forward assist and shell deflector on the left hand as well making it a true left hand setup. Not to mention it has the usual CMT Tactical sexy lines.

As of right now its just a prototype and no availability timeframe was mentioned. I’m sure if there is enough interest and demand for this new Lefty upper, CMT Tactical will make it happen. Be sure to stop on over at the CMT Tactical Facebook page and let them know if you want them to make this Southpaw Dream a reality. You can also take a look at www.CMTTactical.com to check out their full line of billet lowers and uppers.

NEW!! Rainier Arms Enhanced Ambi Accessories Combo Kit

Posted on August 13th, 2014 by ar15news

I swear I had absolutely nothing to do with picking the components of the new Enhanced Ambi Accessories Combo Kit from Rainier Arms, but if you looked at some of my rifles you probably wouldn’t believe me. The components that make up this kit are some of the most popular accessories for AR-15 builds and not just because they are cool, these are high quality upgrades. The kit includes three accessories that I would say are absolutely the best in their field, the Rainier Arms RAPTOR ambi charging handle, the Battle Arms Development BAD-ASS ambi selector and the Norgon Ambi Catch magazine release. It also includes the Seekins Precision Enhanced Bolt Catch and Billet Mag Release. Instead of buying all of these accessories separately, you can purchase them all together and save yourself about $40 over the usual price. Check it out now at www.RainierArms.com.

AR Pistol Build Details and Pictures

Posted on August 4th, 2014 by ar15news

I recently built a new sexy looking AR Pistol that I’ve been taking pictures of and have gotten quite a few questions about what components I used, why I set it up the way I did and how its running so far. Its been a while since I did a “Build Details” article so I figured since so many people were interested in this build I would do one on it. This article will basically be a run down of the different components as well as an explanation of why I used them if needed.

We’ve all seen some AR Pistols that have extremely short barrels/uppers. I tend to not go shorter than a 10.5″ barrel on mine as it’s short enough to make them more compact without sacrificing a ton of accuracy or velocity. This whole build started out with a mid length AERO Precision COP Upper and Forged Lower. This is the second AR I’ve built with this receiver set and I love them.

THE AR PISTOL UPPER
The Upper, as I mentioned, features an AERO Precision COP mid length upper with a Parallax Tactical TiN BCG, Magpul MBUS Pro sights and Fortis Mfg Hammer charging handle. For the optic I wanted something very small and compact so I went with the Vortex Optics RAZOR and an American Defense Mfg QD mount. The barrel is an ODIN Works 10.5″ .223 Wylde Stainless Steel barrel with a Primary Weapons CQB comp on the end. The combination of a shorter barrel and the CQB comp makes it perfect for a home defense weapon but the ODIN Works barrel definitely holds up to its reputation as a straight shooter and is absolutely capable of hitting longer range targets with ease. I’ll shoot some 100 yard groups soon and do another writeup for you guys on the accuracy of this 10.5″ AR Pistol.

AR Pistol Upper

THE AR PISTOL LOWER
The lower for this build is an AERO Precision lower that I bought as a set with the upper for this build. Both were Cerakoted Tungsten for a unique look. So far I’ve added a Battle Arms Development BAD-CASS-SA short throw selector and EPS Pins, Phase 5 Weapon Systems Winter Trigger Guard, Magpul K2 grip and an Impact Weapons Components QD End Plate sling mount. There is a new ALG Defense ACT trigger waiting for it down stairs that I need to install.

Another feature that should be standard on ALL AR Pistols is the combination of a Sig Sauer SB15 Arm Brace and an SB15 specific buffer tube such as the KAK Industry Super Sig Tube or Phase 5 Hex-2.  These buffer tubes push the SB15 further away from the receiver making the setup a bit more comfortable to shoulder (Shouldering the Sig SB15 is legal according to the ATF). For this build I installed the KAK Super Sig Tube and its awesome. You can even get an adjustment kit of rings that you slide on before installing the SB15 to adjust how far back it sits.

You also might notice the MagPod on the magazine. These will be available for purchase very soon!

AR Pistol Lower

THE BUSINESS END
The part I get questions about the most is the business end of the upper. Most people seem to really like this setup so here is a pretty detailed look at it. One of the other reasons I like muzzle devices like the CQB comp is that you can put a light right up to the end of the muzzle and not worry so much about it getting damaged in the blast of the rifle or coated in carbon. My setup consists of a Magpul AFG and a Haley Strategic Partners Thorntail Offset Mount with an INFORCE WML mounted on it. The Thorntail Offset Mount is made by Impact Weapons Components for HSP and is an awesome mount for the WML. It has four slots to mount the WML on and can even be mounted cantilevered like mine is.

IWC HSP Thorntail Offset Light Mount 1

As you can see the WML is pushed out almost to the tip of the muzzle. Pushing it further forward not only reduces shadowing in the light beam but also gives you a lot more real-estate to put your hand on a shorter rail.

IWC HSP Thorntail Offset Light Mount 1

The next few pictures will show you a detailed look at the complete setup and hand position. While using the AFG I like to put my thumb on top of the rail for a solid grip. To activate the light, all you need to do is slide your thumb to the left and the activation button is right there. This is a very effective and comfortable setup.

IWC HSP Thorntail Offset Light Mount 1IWC HSP Thorntail Offset Light Mount 1IWC HSP Thorntail Offset Light Mount 1IWC HSP Thorntail Offset Light Mount 1

If you like this light setup and want to put it on your rifle or pistol build, I would recommend checking out www.ImpactWeaponsComponents.com. They have the HSP Thorntail Offset Mount, Magpul AFG grip and INFORCE WML light all in-stock. Plus, if you use the discount code “ar15news” at checkout you’ll save 5% off your entire order.

This is definitely my favorite AR Pistol build to date. After a few hundred rounds so far I can tell you it runs like a champ and is absolutely a blast to shoot. The bolt holds open on empty mag, no Failure to Eject, no Failure to Feed, etc. Just an all around accurate AR Pistol that I would not hesitate to grab when my life depended on it.

NEW Battle Arms Development Selector Levers and Forged Lower

Posted on August 1st, 2014 by ar15news

Battle Arms Development has introduced a few new products recently. They first released two new selector levers for their modular BAD-ASS selector. They are also releasing their new Battle Arms Development forged lower receiver very soon and we have a couple of sneak peek pictures. Read more about these new products below.

BAD SHORT CRANK AND SCALLOPED LEVERS
Battle Arms Development BAD-ASS selectors are the industry standard and are used in many rifles as standard equipment. One of the neat things about these selectors is that they are modular and offer different selector lever options. You can choose from a decent selection of short, long, thick, thin, etc. selector levers already but they just recently added two more to their list of available options.

Battle Arms Development New Selectors

The first lever they added was the Scalloped lever which was originally designed by Military Morons. Depending on the users hand placement on the pistol grip of an AR, the standard (wider) versions of the lever can come in contact with the trigger finger. The Scalloped lever is a modified version of the “Short Standard” lever. The cut some material away from the outside/bottom of the selector lever in a curved design that fits the shape of the finger and keeps it out of contact.

The second lever is the Short Crank. One of the more popular selector models is the Crank model (looks like a car window crank) that Battle Arms Development introduced a while back. People have been asking for a Short version to use on the trigger finger side of the receiver for a while and BAD is always happy to make it happen if there is enough demand. This lever has actually been public for a while but was never added to the website as an available option until now.

Both of these selector levers are available now at www.BattleArmsDevelopment.com

BAD FORGED AR-15 LOWR RECEIVER
We’ve known for a while now that Battle Arms Development would be introducing a new Forged Lower Receiver held to their strict tolerances, featuring their new BAD logo and obviously compatible with their BAD-ASS-ST and BAD-CASS-ST short throw selectors. They just got the first shipment back from plating and they look awesome. (pics below) The first run is going to be sold through Rainier Arms. They are not available just yet but I’ve already asked to be notified prior to them being released so I can let you guys know too. You can also keep an eye out for yourself at www.RainierArms.com.

Sneak Peek!! Rainier Arms A-DAC Forged Lower Receiver

Posted on July 18th, 2014 by ar15news

Now this is something I’m excited about. Rainier Arms (one of my favorite retailers) is coming out with a new version of their high quality Forged Lowers. The new lower will have the same features such as compatibility with the Battle Arms Development 45 degree selectors but will also add the A-DAC function from AXTS Weapons.

Rainier Arms Forged A-DAC Lower 1

Rainier Arms Forged A-DAC Lower 1

The A-DAC function is a right-hand bolt catch (integrated into the magazine release button). The A-DAC allows you to hold the magazine release button in (dropping the mag if one is inserted), pull the charging handle to the rear and lock the bolt back all at the same time. As I’ve mentioned in the past, I could care less about an ambi Bolt RELEASE. I want an ambi Bolt HOLD to help with increasing the speed of clearing malfunctions, etc. There really isn’t any other reason for you to manually hold the bolt open unless you’re clearing a malfunction or inspecting the weapon which in both cases you will want to remove the magazine. The A-DAC system is the perfect solution. Watch the following video that shows how the A-DAC system works.

The original Forged lower will still be available, if you don’t want or need this feature. The Mountain logo has also been added to the left side of the receiver.

Rainier Arms Forged A-DAC Lower 3

Prices will be slightly higher for this version, but unknown at this time. Will be sure to update you as soon as these are available at www.RainierArms.com.

Big thanks to my buddy Rich for making the trip to Rainier Arms and sharing these cell phone pics with me. You can follow his professional photography work at UWone77 on Facebook

REVIEW: Armageddon Tactical GMS-15 Charging Handle

Posted on July 1st, 2014 by ar15news

A few months ago I was given the opportunity to review a new charging handle from Armageddon Tactical. The charging handle is called the GMS-15 which stands for Gas Management System. The GMS-15 is an ambidextrous charging handle for the AR-15 that features a really cool gas management system and a pretty unique look. I’ve spent the last couple of months with it to see how well the Gas Management System works, how well it functions as an Ambi Charging Handle and to see how durable it is.

I’m always up for reviewing some cool new AR part but its not often that you get asked to review a charging handle. You typically think of a charging handle just being a charging handle. However when I first got it in my hands I was pleasantly surprised. It not only looks pretty unique but feels nice and solid. As you can see in the picture below the GMS-15 looks nothing like your standard charging handle.

Armageddon Tactical GMS-15 Charging Handle 1

GAS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

The Gas Management System on the GMS-15 is pretty cool. If you’re at all familiar with how a charging handle works you know that the hole at the front of the charging actually goes around the rear end of the gas tube putting it in direct line with the hot nasty gasses that are shot back into your upper with every round fired. With nowhere else to go, quite often those same gasses can be expelled out through the charging handle opening and right into the shooters face. This is especially true for suppressor users as gas blow back can be almost unbearable at times.

The GMS-15 fixes this issue with a vertical port and chamber at the rear of the charging handle. The chamber sticks up a bit taller than a normal charging handle and is machined in a way that it seals off the charging handle opening. Once the gas is redirected through the port and into the chamber, it has nowhere else to go but out throughout two small vents that force the gas away from the shooters face. It’s basically saying “Hey Gas, come on over here and exit through this hole.”

Armageddon Tactical GMS-15 Charging Handle 1

Armageddon Tactical GMS-15 Charging Handle 1

Armageddon Tactical GMS-15 Charging Handle 1

I personally don’t own any suppressors (that reminds me I need to fix that) but I can tell you from the few hundred rounds I was able to shoot behind this charging handle in multiple different guns, I didn’t experience any gas blow back at all. As far as I can tell the GMS-15 did a great job of redirecting any gasses away from my face. The next step will be to send the charging handle to a buddy of mine who does own some suppressors and see what he thinks.

AMBIDEXTROUS FUNCTION OF THE GMS-15

One of the cool parts of the design is that it has no levers to pull on which completely does away with the typical weak roll pin issue you find on your standard AR-15 charging handle. Instead of levers that your hand has to hit to release the latch, you just pull on the head of the charging handle itself. The head and shaft of the charging handle are two separate pieces. With the bolt closed, the shaft has pressure against it which allows the latch to release when you pull back on the handle head. I was able to manipulate the charging handle from either side by pulling straight back on it with the side of my index finger which is how most people do it. I was also able to work it using the palm of my hand as well.

Armageddon Tactical GMS-15 Charging Handle 1

Armageddon Tactical GMS-15 Charging Handle 1

The only snag I ran into (which really isn’t a snag) is when doing reloads left handed with the bolt held open on an empty mag. When shooting right handed you get used to the bolt release on the left side of the lower making it easy to release the bolt and start shooting again. Lefties have to either take their hand off the firing position and hit the bolt release, do some funky over or under move with their right hand to hit the bolt release OR pull back on an ambi charing handle in which case the reloaded mag will force the bolt catch to move allowing the bolt to go forward into battery. With the GMS-15, when the bolt is held back there is no pressure holding the shaft of the charging handle in place so the latch won’t release. This is why they built in what looks like a button on the back of the charging handle head. In reality it is the rear of the charging handle shaft that you can press your thumb on to manipulate the charging handle when the bolt is held open and it works perfect, just with a different technique. This is shown in the following picture however I used my right hand to demonstrate to not block the picture.

Armageddon Tactical GMS-15 Charging Handle 1

DURABILITY

The GMS-15 mostly machined from billet 7075-T6 aluminum and has a heat treated 4140 Steel latch. From the minute I held the GMS-15 it seemed very solid. A few months later it still feels as solid as day one. The coating on the charging handle is a Teflon infused Anodizing which definitely feels a bit smoother than your standard ano. So far it is holding up very well with no spots wearing off or flaking, etc.

CONCLUSION

I took my time on this one as I wanted to really make sure to give you a review after use not just a review after  snuggling with it on day one. I’ve definitely enjoyed using the Armageddon Tactical GMS-15 charging handle. Its just a good solid piece of kit that works as described. You can expect this new charging handle to sell very well, especially with those who use a suppressor when shooting. The design of the GMS-15 is really cool and unique. There are lots of ambi charging handles on the market and I would put the GMS-15 right up in the mix at the top but not necessarily the King taking into consideration the left hand operation issue with the bolt held open. However, when you add in the awesome Gas Management System it definitely puts it into a different category as an ambidextrous gas blocking charging handle. If you are a suppressor user or even better yet, a left handed suppressor user, this would be a great charging handle to take a look at.

The Armageddon Tactical GMS-15 charging handle is currently available for purchase from Impact Weapons Components, Tactical Link and Armageddon Tactical. We’ve partnered up with Impact Weapons Components for years now and they’ve even given us our own discount code.

Impact Weapons Components is the least expensive route because of our discount code. If you plan on buying one of these charging handles or any other item from IWC, be sure to use the discount code “ar15news” during check at www.ImpactWeaponsComponents.com to save 5% off your purchase.

You can also purchase the GMS-15 from Tactical Link and Armageddon Tactical.
