MELBOURNE, FL, September 23, 2015 ARES Defense Systems, the country’s leading manufacturer of innovative, mission-configurable firearms, parts and accessories announces that it is now shipping its patented MCR® Sub-Carbine to the US commercial market.

ARES’ MCR® Sub-Carbine is a lightweight, semi-auto 5.56 NATO caliber weapon featuring gas piston operation, a 3-second quick change barrel system and a left-side folding stock assembly that telescopes for adjusting the length of pull. The charging handle is ambidextrous and interchangeable with standard AR15/M4 charging handles to suit user preference. Suppressor capable and able to be fired with the stock in any position, the MCR® is a clear step above many of the folding stock and telescoping PDW options in the marketplace. Critical Sub-Carbine components are billet machined from aircraft grade alloys and heat treated to exacting specifications for durability and long weapon life. Aluminum components are Type III, Class 2 hard-coat anodized to MIL-A-8625F for maximum corrosion and wear protection. Furthermore, all ARES Defense products are 100% Made in U.S.A. with US materials and workmanship.

Also available to compliment the MCR® Sub-Carbine is an optional SKB briefcase with custom-cut foam insert that holds the weapon, six 30-round magazines, a cleaning kit, Operator’s Manual and storage space for a suppressor or other Mission Critical Accessories. The MCR® Sub-Carbine chassis is identical to the rest of the MCR® family and can be reconfigured for belt-feed or other role by simply rearranging its parts.

“Overseas contracts with a NATO partner paved the way for the semi-auto MCR® Sub-Carbine for the US consumer market.” says Geoffrey Herring, President-CEO of ARES Defense. “The Sub-Carbine is a critical model of the eight weapons that currently define the MCR® family and is particularly significant for maximum portability. While all of the select-fire military models that we’ve shipped have featured our co-planar MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny Rail handguard, we recently added a KeyMod style handguard option for the US consumer market to meet the interests of our customers. The select-fire MCR® Sub-Carbine is a proven and documented player in the military marketplace and is a serious system for professional shooters.”

ARES Defense MCR Sub-Carbine 1

The MCR® quick-change barrel system allows users to configure the MCR® in seconds without the aid of tools and is available in 12” (NFA Rules Apply) and 16” inch lengths. Additionally, the MCR® Sub-Carbine features gas-piston operation that provides greater reliability in extreme conditions, and is cleaner, cooler and more reliable in adverse conditions than the legacy direct-gas system.

The unique design of the MCR® Sub-Carbine permits users to upgrade their existing rifles by simply substituting an ARES supplied MCR® upper receiver assembly and folding stock mechanism in place of the legacy upper and stock, and the MCR® is rearward compatible to the earliest AR15’s from the 1960’s.

BROWE recently introduced their new BTO or BROWE Tactical Optic. You are probably already familiar with their awesome BCO (BROWE Combat Optic). Essentially the only difference is that the BCO has a Titanium housing and the new BTO features a forged 7075-T6 Aluminum housing. This equates to a slightly lower retail price while still maintaining super high quality construction and ruggedness. I spoke with Brian Browe, President of BROWE Inc. regarding the new BTO today and he told me the actual MSRP will be $1,200 but they are offering it at an awesome intro price of just $875 this week. The price will slowly creep up to the regular MSRP so if you want one, jump on it now while its at the lowest price.

Heckler & Koch (HK) and Operator Suppressor Systems Inc. (OSS) have teamed up to bring the ultimate complete package to market. Their pairing has birthed the HK MR556A1-SD, which is a package combination of the amazing HK MR556A1 rifle, the new HK MRS KeyMod rail and the new OSS Suppressor giving you the already proven quality and reliability of the HK MR556A1 rifle with a more comfortable, usable design. This could quite possibly be the coolest thing I’ve seen all year.

HK MR556A1-SD : OSS Suppressor 2 HK MR556A1-SD : OSS Suppressor 2

The new HK suppressed MR556A1-SD is equipped with a cutting edge next generation of suppressor technology from Operators Suppressor Systems Inc. (OSS). It is coupled with HK’s unique new Modular Rail System (MRS) to provide the shooter with a high performance integrated weapon system.

The modular rail system (MRS) for the MR556-SD allows the shooter to place individual rail components and accessories anywhere along the length of the seven free sides of the forearm using the slotted interface. HK has been working with OSS to develop the next generation of advanced suppressors for the HK MR series of rifles and carbines.

These suppressors are comprised of two modules, a Back Pressure Regulator (BPR) and a Signature Reduction Module (SRM)™. The BPR1425™ on the MR556A1-SD captures and controls expanding gases instead of simply trapping the gas with baffles. To further reduce the sound signature of the MR556 and eliminate flash, the OSS SRM4 module can be added to the end of the BPR1425.

HK MR556A1-SD : OSS Suppressor 2HK MR556A1-SD : OSS Suppressor 2

Important Features of the MR556A1-SD MODULAR RAIL SYSTEM (MRS)

  • Repeatable rail segment mounting in any position along the 14 inch forearm (9 inch MRS also available)
  • Self-captured rail segment hardware
  • Two integrated Quick Detachable (QD) sling attachment points just forward of the receiver
  • Optional positionable QD mount attachment
  • Octagon profile allows the OSS suppressor to be installed/removed with the rail in place
  • MRS provides more comfort to the shooter’s support hand

OSS SUPPRESSOR

Typical 18 dB reduction with the BPR module installed without SRM Less than an inch of increased weapon length with just the BPR Eliminates up to 95% of the back pressure created by traditional suppressors Attenuates the noise signature without adversely affecting the operating system Redirection of expanding gas within the BPR reduces felt recoil and muzzle rise Greatly reduces weapon fouling Little increase in bolt speed Reduces component wear and overheating common to legacy suppressor designs Reduction in back pressure greatly diminishes toxic gases expelled back at the shooter Better weapon balance with over the barrel mounting of the BPR module Typical sound reductions measured at the shooter’s ear with the BPR and SRM4 installed <139 dB Components are designed to self-tighten during firing to prevent loosening Little to no impact shift transitioning from just BPR to BPR and SRM Typical MRTF (mean rounds to failure) 8000 rounds, semi-automatic Internal parts on both the BPR and SRM can be replaced

The HK MR556A1-SD gives the shooter the same outstanding MR rifle performance with the added benefit of more ergonomic handling and noise comfort of the new MRS rail system and OSS advanced sound suppression.

HK MR556A1-SD : OSS Suppressor 1

Obviously with a suppressor being part of the HK MR556A1-SD package you will have to wait a number of months before your paperwork comes back from the ATF, so the earlier you get in on this the better. Right now Rainier Arms has Serial Numbers on hand for Form 3 Transfers and is one of the only places you can order this kit right now. Check it out at www.RainierArms.com

I wanted to show you guys a quick visual comparison between two of my favorite Geissele rails, the SMR MK4 and SMR MK5. Both are fairly new (released in the last year) and I know it can be hard to figure out what’s what just by looking at the “MKX” naming system. The Geissele SMR MK4 and MK5 are some of the most solidly built KeyMod rails out there. As you’ll see below, you can’t go wrong with either one as they both are awesome options. Click on the images for a larger view.

GEISSELE AUTOMATICS SMR (SUPER MODULAR RAIL) MK4

First lets look at the MK4. The Geissele SMR MK4 is kind of a hybrid rail. It has KeyMod mounting slots at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions with small 1913 picatinny rail sections up front at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock and a full length picatinny rail at 12 o’clock as well. There are a few other rails like this on the market and as weird as it may seem it makes a lot of sense. The number one best selling KeyMod accessory is…the 1913 rail sections which people always mount toward the front of a KeyMod rail.

620 Geissele SMR MK4 4

One of the main reasons people are hesitant to switch from their quad rails over to a new system such as KeyMod is because they have so many “Quad Rail” accessories, especially light mounts. The MK4 allows you to have an integrated quad rail section to mount your lights to while offering KeyMod slots to use for the popular Rail Covers from companies like Noveske, etc. I’ve personally found that the Geissele rails are so well finished that I don’t even need any rail covers.

620 Geissele SMR MK4 4

I really dig the look of the MK4. Just something about the use of both 1913 and KeyMod just looks cool. As you can see in the pictures below, it makes for one awesome looking rifle and offers a super solid rail with lots of options. The MK4 would be perfect for those who are either on the fence about 1913 vs KeyMod or those who have specific 1913 light mounts, bipods, etc. that you want to still use and don’t want to buy extra mounts to make them compatible.

620 Geissele SMR MK4 4

GEISSELE AUTOMATICS SMR (SUPER MODULAR RAIL) MK5

Now lets take a look at the MK5. The Geissele SMR MK5 is built how KeyMod was designed to be used with KeyMod mounting slots all the way out to the tip of the rail. This gives you the most flexibility with mounting KeyMod accessories such as Light Mounts, Handstops, QD Sling Mounts, rail sections, etc.

620 Geissele SMR MK5 1

As you’ll notice, the KeyMod slots are at the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions with a full length picatinny rail section at 12 o’clock like the MK4 does. Both rails look very similar, however with the MK5 there are no short rail sections at the the front of the rail and there are no front QD Sling Mounts. This design is all about letting the “KeyMod Convert” have as much flexibility as possible in mounting their new KeyMod accessories.

620 Geissele SMR MK5 1

620 Geissele SMR MK5 1

As I mentioned before, there really is not wrong decision to be made here. I love both of these rails. Its more of a personal preference thing when it comes to deciding between these two rails. Both feature the amazingly high degree of quality you would expect to find with a Geissele rail and look freaking sweet.

I had planned on waiting for Geissele to get the newer MK5’s in-stock but they are such a hot item I decided to just give you a link to a Geissele dealer and AR15NEWS friend, Weapon Oufitters, since they have both the MK4 and MK5 in-stock right now. That way if you like what you see you can pick one up for yourself. I’ve also put some information below for great KeyMod accessories too.

You can purchase the Geissele SMR MK4 and MK5 rails at www.WeaponOutfitters.com

As always, you can peruse the Geissele.com website as well but with the high demand of these rails they are not all in-stock.

This is a guest post from our friend Roy, owner of Weapon Outfitters, who gets to handle ALL of the cool new toys. So many people have been trying to decide between the new Magpul MBUS Pro backup iron sights and the very nice Knights Armament Co. Micro folding backup iron sights. Most people don’t own both (or either) so Roy went out of his way to give a good bit of information comparing the two sets. Read his information below.

Got a chance to compare the Magpul MBUS Pro to the Knight’s Armament Company micro folding backup iron sights! There are a few differences in capabilities and features between the two, with the MBUS Pro priced right below the KAC sights.

Weapon Outfitters KAC Micro BUIS vs Magpul MBUS Pro Comparison 620

The MBUS Pro notably uses all steel construction, with the front sight being the lowest profile folding front sight I’ve seen yet! The MBUS Pro features tool less adjustment, but it’s a bit harder to manipulate than the KAC. The front sight post is standard USGI width, while the KAC’s micro front sight is thinner for greater accuracy potential. The KAC Micro Front has a steel base but aluminum folding body.

On the rear sights, the MBUS Pro’s beefy steel construction is quite noticable in the hand. It features a serrated rear sight surface to help reduce glare, and the peep hole sight folds out and away as needed. The MBUS pro’s windage is easily dialed in with a low profile knob. Unlike the micro, there is no built in elevation dial… but that’s something that you’re more likely to see or use on a match rifle… or a 20th century German/Swiss rifle. The KAC’s peep hole aperture is not adjustable… which is fine by me since you should only be using the peep hole adjustment for true accuracy potential anyway. The ghost ring sight is a legacy of the mid 20th century when no one had weapon mounted lights or red dot sights, and people actually had to try to shoot each other in the dark relying on ambient light only. If you are trying to shoot someone with a long gun in the dark with backup iron sights as a civilian, LEO, or soldier… something went horribly wrong somewhere, and the size of your rear sight aperture is probably the least of your concerns, IMHO!

All in all, the MBUS Pros offer a great value package at a great price, while the KAC’s premium pricing definitely does give it a few extra features that folks may or may not want. These two options represent the high end and mid level market offerings well.

If you’ve been on the fence trying to decide between these two sets I hope this article helped. I personally own a set of the Magpul MBUS Pro’s and absolutely love them. Both of these sights are extremely hard to find right now, but somehow Weapon Outfitters has managed to get both front and rear of both the Magpul MBUS Pro and KAC Micro in-stock at the same time. Take your pick at the links below.
