If you still think Geissele only makes amazing triggers, you need to start thinking differently about Geissele. They have and still do make some of the best rails on the market but over that past few years they have added things like Armorers Tools, Optic Mounts, Charging Handles and now … the Maritime Bolt Catch. Think of the Maritime Bolt Catch as a bolt catch with a larger surface area and more aggressive texture. What this does that other aftermarket bolt catch’s don’t is it extends the controls closer to the index finger of a left handed shooter so they can manipulate the bolt catch with their index finger without taking their hand off the grip.

Geissele Automatics Maritime Bolt Catch 1

“The Geissele Maritime Bolt Catch is designed with the warfighter in mind and will work with any lower receiver designed to accept a mil-spec M16/M4 Carbine bolt catch. The increased surface area promotes ease of function when locking back the bolt or releasing the bolt after a magazine change. In addition, the extended controls add an increased functionality for left handed shooters who no longer have to break their grip to manipulate the bolt catch. Left handed shooters can easily reach the controls using the index finger of their left hand making magazine changes and locking the bolt back much more fast and efficient. Aggressive checkering covers the surface of the levers giving the Geissele Maritime Bolt Catch a textured surface that enables positive feedback to the shooters hand when being used with gloves or at night. Manufactured from properly heat treated 8620 steel and manganese phosphate coated, the Geissele Maritime Bolt Catch is intended to serve as an enhanced mil-spec replacement and assist in giving our warfighters overmatch capability with the M16/M4 carbine platform.”

Whether you’re a lefty or righty, there are benefits to be had here and coming from Geissele you know it will be top notch quality. Thankfully the price is extremely competitive with other aftermarket bolt catch’s with an MSRP of just $29. I’ve ordered a couple to try out and you can too at www.Geissele.com.

One of my absolute least favorite roll pins to install is the Bolt Catch Roll Pin. Its location makes it difficult to get at and being parallel to the side of the lower means if your punch slips off the roll pin when you hit it you are gonna scratch your new lower or your customers lower. Some companies have started making threaded bolt catch pins and holes to make life easier but you should never had to buy your new lower based on whether or not it has a threaded bolt catch hole or not. KAK Industry just introduced yesterday a new Bolt Catch Roll Pin Starter Punch that is extra long so you can hit it with a hammer behind the lower, is made of 304 Stainless Steel and features a recessed opening to hold the roll pin while you get it started. While Roll Pin Starter Punch’s are not a new invention by any means, I don’t remember ever seeing one specifically designed for the Bolt Catch Pin before so it really peaked my interest.

What’s even more impressive….the cost is just $10. Every AR builder should have the right tools to do the job and this is definitely one of them.

Every so often I run across a product that to me seems new but in reality its one I missed a long time ago and just didn’t know it existed. Last month, RECOIL published an online review of the Redi-Catch by Boonie Packer which seemed like a really cool new product but apparently its been around for some time. It allows you to lock back your bolt using the mag release button like the AXTS A-DAC system. If you want AXTS’ A-DAC system you have to buy a specific lower from a company that has paid to use that system. With the Redi-Catch you can virtually retrofit any AR lower to do the same thing using only a different magazine catch bar and an “S” shaped piece of Spring Wire.

I’ve said it probably 100 times before but its probably worth saying again, “I couldn’t care less about an ambi bolt release” from a right handed shooters perspective. When I insert a mag, I slap the paddle with my left hand and the bolt goes home like it should. However, I find a ton of value in the idea of an ambi Bolt HOLD for clearing malfunctions, etc. I really have no need to lock the bolt back while shooting unless I am clearing a malfunction. With an ambi Bolt HOLD a right hand shooter can keep their shooting hand in its firing position. The Redi-Catch covers two steps to clearing a malfunction all in one. By depressing the mag release you are dropping the mag and able to lock the bolt back at the same tim reducing the overall time it takes to clear that malfunction and get back into shooting steel…or bad guys, just depends on the activities for the day.

The Redi-Catch can be purchased for just $34.95 on www.Redi-Mag.com

Forward Controls Design is getting ready to introduce their new ABC/R (Augmented Bolt Catch / Release) and I can’t wait to get on in and installed on one of my rifles. As you’ll see below the new ABC/R Bolt Catch is not flat like most Bolt Catch’s are. It features a slight angle not the bottom portion and a little bit steeper of an angle on the top portion. The photos show the ABC/R unfinished prototype (has not gone through deburring and tumbling). The retail units will be Melonited black and have a very high quality finish. Roger, the owner of Forward Controls Design (formerly of Battle Arms Development), explains why he wanted to redesign the standard bolt catch which you can read below.

It came from my dissatisfaction with factory bolt catch’s tiny, boot heel like lower paddle.  I’ve always deemed the top paddle to be of sufficient size, it’s the lower paddle the factory bolt catch, and most aftermarket bolt catches for that matter, fall short.

Forward Controls Design IBC:R 3

This shortcoming is amplified when there is a Norgon Ambi-Catch in place.  The Ambi-catch places its release paddle on the same vertical plane as the factory bolt catch bottom paddle, making the  bolt catch’s lower paddle even harder to use. With a gloved hand, it’s virtually impossible to tell them apart by feel.

Forward Controls Design IBC:R 3

The ABC/R has an enlarged top paddle, the lower 50% of the top paddle is canted at 5 degree, the upper 50% is canted at 10 degree.  The combined effect is the top paddle is easier to use, not solely based on its larger size, but because its angles.  When the bolt carrier is locked back, the canted top paddle is much easier for the palm or thumb to access.

The lower paddle of the ABC/R is canted at 10 degree.  With or without a Norgon Ambi-catch in place, accessibility has been vastly improved. The ABC/R’s angled lower paddle is on a separate vertical plane than the Ambi-Catch, making identification far more intuitive, both visually and by feel.

Forward Controls Design IBC:R 1

The notch immediately above the ABC/R’s lower paddle isn’t there by accident.  As you run your finger down the bolt catch towards the lower paddle, the notch is meant to give you tactile feedback “the top portion of the bolt catch is ending, you’re about to approach the lower paddle”

Forward Controls Design IBC:R 4

The lightening cuts on the ABC/R are there to make its weight as close to the factory weight as possible (0.445oz vs. 0.401oz), the ABC/R isn’t meant to be a lightweight component.

Right now the best place to keep tabs on all of the new stuff coming out from Forward Controls Design in on their Facebook page. Roger even shows off some pics of the design process to explain how things progress, etc and is a pretty cool page to follow. Look for the new ABC/R to be released soon.

Its always nice to find an inexpensive upgrade for your AR that can actually make a difference in function, etc. Very soon, American Defense Mfg will be releasing their new Enhance Bolt Catch for purchase and it looks like a really nice option that won’t break the bank. It features a larger “Bolt Release” surface and the entire face of the Bolt Catch is textured as well. I just looked and these are listed on the ADM website already which is a good sign that they are close to having them available for sale. Purchase price will be just $16.99 at www.ADM-MFG.com.

**Coming Soon!** The ADM Enhanced Bolt Catch. This is a part compatible with all AR style lowers that use a milspec bolt catch. The enlarged release surface and more aggressive serrations provide the end user with a more positive and dependable part for manipulating the bolt in their rifle. This is the same bolt catch that will be standard on all our UICs, shown on a BCM forged lower receiver.

For weeks…no months now, everyone has been asking “When can I buy that awesome CMT Tactical Ambi lower?”. Well, your wait is now over. Just yesterday CMT Tactical announced that they had opened sales for the new UHP15A ambi receiver. The new UHP15A features an Ambi Mag Release on the left side of the receiver and an Ambi Bolt Release on the right side of the receiver as you can see in the pictures below.

CMT Tactical UHP15A Ambi Lower 2

CMT Tactical UHP15A Ambi Lower 1

I’ve had my set for a while now and they really work great. The bolt release works just as you imagine, press the lever and it releases the bolt. The mag release is gated to protect agains accidental mag release but can still be actuated by the flat of your trigger finger, etc.

CMT Tactical UHP15A Ambi Lower 3

As with all of the different billet receivers CMT Tactical makes, the fit, finish and overall quality of the UHP15A is top tier and features a completely “roll-pin-less” assembly. The UHP15A ambi lowers are now available for purchase as just the UHP15A ambi receiver alone or in Upper and Lower Combo sets and will soon be available through RainierArm.com and AimSurplus.com.

This is a Sneak Peek at the new War Sport Industries Bolt Catch. I’m really digging the look and design of this thing. As you can see the actual “Bolt Hold” portion of the Bolt Catch sticks out further than the rest of it making it easier to feel when clearing a malfunction, etc. The “Bolt Release” portion is quite a bit larger as well. Both the Hold and Release areas also have nice deep grooves machined into them as well. I know oversized Bolt Catch’s are nothing new but I really like the tactile (i.e. perceptible by touch) nature of this new War Sport Industries version.

The Bolt Catch in the photo is shown in the raw but the actual product will have some sort of protective coating, I’m just not sure what yet. Looking forward to these coming out for sale on www.WarSport-US.com. I think I’m gonna need like Eleventeen of these things.
