Ever since I SBR’d my QC10 9mm AR I have wanted to put a Battle Arms VERT PDW Stock on it. I have the VERT PDW Stock on one of my other SBR’s and it truly is one of the only PDW stocks that I feel can be used on just about any AR, even full size rifles because of its integrated cheek rest. The only holdback was that the standard buffer. While it works great with 5.56 and 300BLK, it wasn’t designed to work with a 9mm AR’s. While similar to a standard AR, a 9mm AR is definitely a fickle beast. After some months of testing, fine tuning and tweaking, Battle Arms is ready to release their new 9mm Buffer for the VERT PDW Stock.

Battle Arms 9mm VERT PDW Stock 1

The new Battle Arms 9mm Buffer weighs 5.7 ounces which is a little lighter than you might expect to run on your 9mm AR (I have run as high as 10 ounce buffers) but what makes this different and  is their patented, Recoil Reducing, Dual Spring Buffer Design which will help soften the recoil impulse and smooth things out considerably.

Battle Arms 9mm VERT PDW Stock 2

The BAD VERT 9mm PDW Buffer will be sold as an upgrade item for those of us who already have a VERT stock in hand and will also available as a complete 9mm VERT PDW Stock System as well.

No matter how you slice it, this is an awesome upgrade to one of, if not THE best PDW stocks on the market. I have a BAD VERT PDW Stock that has been waiting for this day and soon will get put to work on the 9mm QC10 SBR. You can buy the buffer or the complete stock system at the links below. If you snag one, make sure you tag us in your pics on Facebook and Instagram so we can see what you guys are all running.

If you’ve followed AR15NEWS for any decent length of time you’ve probably noticed we build lots of ARs. Some times, as an AR builder, it’s easy to get in a rut and kind of build the same thing over and over again which gets boring. All it takes is a bit of imagination and planning and your next build can be the best one you’ve ever put together. This is the very case with my most recent build.

Believe it or not I had SBR’d this Rainier Arms forged lower well over a year ago but had no idea what I wanted to do with it. Then it came to me and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. From there it was just a matter of time before I had the parts in hand and ready to build.

Lets start out with a few closer shots. From this angle you can see the Rainier Arms ambi safety, Juggernaut Tactical ambi charging handle and Scalarworks OPS (On Point Sights) fixed rear sight.

Rainier Arms SBR Build 1 - Scalarworks OPS Fixed Sights Juggernaut Tactical Ambi Charging Handle - Rainier Arms Ambi Safety

As I mentioned above, this build got started as a Rainier Arms Forged A-DAC lower that I bought and Form 1’d just before the ATF41P effective date. I added a Rainier Arms forged upper and ambi safety, CMC Triggers Flat 3.5lb Trigger and LPK, Superlative Arms Piston Kit, Juggernaut Tactical ambi charging handle, Geissele MK4 rail and Scalarworks OPS Fixed Sights and Low Drag Mount for the Aimpoint T1 and a SureFeed Magazines 20 Round mag.

Rainier Arms SBR Build 2 - CMC Triggers Flat Trigger Geissele SMR MK4 rail Scalarworks OPS Fixed Sights Aimpoint Micro T1 Rainier Arms A-DAC

Of course as a Rainier Arms SBR build I chose to use their 10.5″ .223 Wylde barrel. Covered it with a Geissele MK4 rail, Arisaka Defense 300/IR Series Scout Light and Inline Scout Mount, SureFire SR07 switch, Scalarworks OPS Fixed Front Sight, Magpul vertical grip and Griffin Armament Taper Mount Supresspr Mount. The Superlative Arms Piston Kit gas block is under there somewhere. 😜

Rainier Arms SBR Build - Geissele SMR MK4 - Arisaka Inline Scout Light Mount 300 Series Scalarworks OPS Front Fixed Sight magpul vertical grip Surefire SR07

Here’s another angle of the business end on the new Rainier Arms SBR build. From this angle you can now see how accessible the Superlative Arms Piston Kit gas block is under the rail. This isn’t like many piston kits were you have one or two settings. Its more like a Piston Kit that has a built in fully adjustable gas block so you can really tune it in.

Rainier Arms SBR Build - Superlative Arms - Rainier Arms - Geissele - Scalarworks - Magpul = Arisaka Rainier Arms

This next shot gives you a better idea of how tidy things are on this build. It’s got everything I need and nothing I don’t. The Scalarworks OPS fixed sights and mount for the Aimpoint T1 are absolutely amazing.

Rainier Arms SBR Build - rainier arms = cmc triggers = scalarworks = aimpoint t1 - juggernaut tactical - magpul - geissele

And here it is. Hope you guys enjoyed a pretty detailed look at my new Rainier Arms SBR build. In the end, this SBR turned out even better than I had pictured it but the initial imagination and passion to create another gun is what got it all started. Don’t be in too much of a hurry to just slap together the first complete rifle you can. Take your time with your next build, map it out, think about what would make you smile every time you see it and then build that.

Rainier Arms SBR Build - rainier arms - geissele - cmc triggers - magpul - scalarworks - griffin armament - surefire = superlative arms piston kit - aimpoint juggernaut tactical

Here’s the full run down of parts for this build. If you want to copy it, be my guest. Would make for a great AR Pistol build too.

Already had a chance to get the gas dialed in on the piston kit and man this thing is smooth. Will be getting some range time this week with this gun getting it sighted in. Will let you guys know how it runs soon.

**Updated image after press release below** Have you ever wished you could run a Rifle Length Gas System on a 16″ or shorter barrel? How about a Carbine Length Gas System on a barrel shorter than 10.3″? Typically, the longer the gas system the smoother and softer the recoil impulse will be. It’s been tried many times before and the end result has always been either an extremely oversized gas port OR scrapping the common length gas system and switching to a custom length gas system….that is until now. My buddy Garret at SPECIAL OPS TACTICAL is today introducing their PATENT PENDING Siphon AGP (Angled Gas Port) Nitride Barrels. By creating an angled gas port they were able to run longer gas systems on shorter barrels than ever before. The crazy part is they are using regular gas blocks and regular Pistol, Carbine and Rifle length gas tubes so the only custom part is the barrel. Does this have you intrigued like it does me? Tons of information is available below. Check it out!

[Press Release Begins]

In a quest to design, engineer and produce the World’s shortest length gas operated firearm barrels using industry standard high quality components Garrett Potter owner of Special Ops Tactical an Embry Riddle Aerospace grad, Philip Picardat owner of Artisan Arms /Micro MOA a Master toolmaker who has made high precision barrels for the industry’s biggest names for over a decade and his son Ryan McCormick collaborated efforts to produce an all new revolutionary line of barrels called “The SOT Siphon AGP Barrels”.  This new revolutionary line of barrels are being produced by Artisan Arms and will be exclusively sold by Special Ops Tactical.  We have developed and manufactured the first and only barrels ever to feature a “rearward” angled gas port in order to increase dwell time and gas pressure enabling us to create the shortest “Pistol length, Carbine length, Midlength, Intermediate and Rifle length barrels in the World while utilizing non-proprietary “gas tubes and gas blocks” by way of our all new “Siphon AGP Barrels” that feature our “Rearward” angled gas port.   Until now no other company in the world has produced a barrel that features a “Rearward” angled gas port. “Meaning from the top of the barrel where the port is initially drilled with the gas port angling rearward back toward the “barrel extension” / rear of the barrel in order to gain dwell time and gas pressure”.  PATENT PENDING)

Special Ops Tactical Siphon AGP Nitride Barrel 1

Traditionally and to date all barrels are drilled with a straight 90 degree  gas port and require about 1.5” Inches of barrel in front of the gas port in order for a barrel to function properly.  Otherwise you end up with a gas port so large that in order to cycle the system that the bolt carrier group is violently slung back by the over gassed port “vastly” outside the area of “normal” operation that even a muzzle brake is not able to overcome the extreme over gassing of the enlarged straight port which leads into several negatives being accuracy, recoil, wear and tear and multiple reliability issues; Not to mention the extreme deafening sound when using a muzzle brake on a short barrel.   Our new “Siphon AGP Barrels” cycle the gas system properly with a much smaller gas port allowing for correct, positive and ultra-reliable function as well as increased recoil reduction “because of the smaller port “which provides much better recoil control as well as accuracy that is just NOT possible with all other manufacturers’ barrels to date!

Our new revolutionary design allows our barrels to be “the shortest” possible length while using  standard gas tubes, standard gas blocks as well as greatly reduced sizes in gas ports because of their Patent Pending “rearward” angled siphon gas ports.  Our new “Siphon Angled Gas Port” is so much smaller than traditionally possible generally speaking the Siphon AGP gas port sizes are 10 to 20 thousandths smaller than their straight port counter parts.  The new Siphon AGP barrels have anywhere from a 8% up to 20% less felt recoil over their straight 90 degree port counterparts depending on specific barrel length, accomplished without the aid of a muzzle brake or any other recoil reducing device!  When a muzzle brake is implemented these barrels are incredibly smooth!

We like to push the limits of what is possible just to see what can achieved.  Designing and building standard components is still enjoyable but we thrive on designing and manufacturing tomorrow’s products!

Throughout this endeavor we knew that there had to be a few key features:

#1. The Barrels must use a standard length gas tubes not custom or proprietary.

#2. The Barrels must use a standard diameter and height gas blocks not custom or proprietary.

#3. The Barrels must be reliable enough to be employed by LEO, Military application, as well as contracted applications.

From our extensive testing we have found extremely promising results that the Siphon AGP barrels have much less of a recoil impulse than their traditional “Straight Gas Port” counterparts.  Generally speaking  8% up to a 20% reduction as compared to their straight port counterparts partially due to the reduced gas port size but is also associated with being able to run a longer gas tube not previously possible with traditional straight port barrels but also because the gas flow has one less 90 degree change in direction so makes the flow of gasses smoother throughout the entire system.

The profile, shape and weight of these new barrels was also very important to us.  We chose to start with a medium contour custom profile on this new line of barrels because of their crossover ability of being able to deliver excellent accuracy but in a more balanced refined lighter weight profile than a traditional government profile as well in efforts to help overcome barrel flex and whip.

Many manufacturers across the board intentionally over gas their barrels in order to ensure their barrels cycle on all types of ammo being hot or light loads.  This causes excessive wear and tear on the entire system and its parts as well as causing unwanted excessive recoil.   We make sure our barrels are not over gassed.  I see and hear so many people both customers as well as others in the industry state or think that a specific gas port size for a particular barrel length and or profile will be “universal” the same or similar to every barrel made across the board; this is NOT the case!  The gas port size has a “direct” relationship to the length of barrel and the Inner diameter of a barrels bore and the slightest change or difference in bore diameter will determine the proper gas port size. (Even with barrels of the same length and caliber all bores are not the exact same size.)

After extensive testing I have realized we have truly designed and manufactured “unobtainium”.  This is the only actual dissipator barrel system.  The new guns “That feature our SOT AGP Siphon Barrels” are truly very special and unique.  They will become a staple in the industry because of their unparalleled smoothness and reduction in recoil that can be applied to Military, Law Enforcement, Contractors and recreational shooters alike.  Our shortest 5” Inch AGP Siphon barrel offers a super compact firearm that is lightweight and extremely agile with such a major gain in recoil reduction over its 7.5 inch straight gas port counterpart, as well as being able to have extreme muzzle control in both semi and full auto modes of firing.  To the shooter the guns that feature our SOT AGP Siphon barrels are so much smoother than any other AR15 platform weapon in or near its category and will absolutely be a major game changer for the industry and shooters alike.  As soon as people get a chance to fire this barrel they will instantly feel and see that this is truly a revolutionary product!

Special Ops Tactical will be first releasing (5.56 NATO Caliber Siphon AGP Barrels in (5”Inch Pistol Length Gas),( 9”Inch Carbine Length Gas), (14”Inch Rifle Length Gas) and (16.01”Inch Rifle Length Gas), as well as several lines of our new Patent Pending SOT Siphon AGP barrels in multiple lengths and calibers including (5.56, 300BLKOUT, 7.62×51, 6.5 Creedmoor) as well as Complete Uppers and Rifles and will continue to add more lengths and calibers in the future so please stay tuned!

—————— New Image Added Below ———————————-

The image below better shows the “rearward” angle of the gas port. Unlike some older AKs and a few other AR manufacturers that have made angled gas ports drilled towards the muzzle end of the barrel, the SOT Siphon AGP barrels angle “rearward” towards the barrel extension.

Special Ops Tactical SOT Siphon AGP Angled Gas Port Barrel

These days everyone builds their own AR and for good reason…its a ton of fun, can save you money and gives you good knowledge of how an AR works. One issue that many AR builders run into is finding compatibility issues with the parts they bought. With the popularity of ultra low profile handguards one of the most common issues is gas block incompatibility. Many handguards are so low profile that they can actually come in contact with the gas block itself or accessories attached to the handguard. I recently ran into this issue myself and figured I would share my experience with you.

One of my most recent builds is a DMR style rifle with a BSF Barrels 16″ barrel with a Carbon Fiber Shroud. Because of the carbon fiber shroud (designed to strengthen the barrel, reduce weight and help it vent heat) the gas block seat is .936″ so of course I just ordered any old .936″ low pro gas block.

Cross Machine Tool 936 low pro gas block on BSF Barrel AERO

Everything installed just fine, I slid the Cross Machine Tool UHPR Mod 2 handguard over the barrel, tightened it all down and … DUN DUN DUUUUN … the gas block was touching the bottom of the handguard. Not just close, literally touching. That’s called “unfreefloating” your barrel. 😂😂 This is something I verify every time I build a rifle as I’ve also seen MLOK screws touching gas blocks as well. Anything coming in contact with the gas block / barrel can and will effect accuracy even at just 100 yards.

Gas Block Touching CMT rail

In a basic beater build you might not care but in a build like this where accuracy is the goal, you have no other choice than to either swap out the gas block or swap out the handguard. Easiest and cheapest is to swap the gas block. Thankfully Cross Machine Tool has just released their new line of J.A.G. (Just A GasBlock) gas blocks which includes a .936 Gas Block specifically designed to fit under their UHPR handguards and many other super low profile handguards.

**One of the only things I actually do like about .936 gas block seats is that the .936″ opening of the gas block is usually big enough to remove without taking off the muzzle device**

936 gas block over dragon muzzle brake

New CMT Gas Block Installed on BSF Barrel Lantac Dragon CMC Trigger

While I had the gas block off I also decided to put a second dimple on the barrel so that the second set screw of the gas block would screw all the way in instead of sticking out just to make sure there was adequate clearance.

Dimpled Barrel for low pro gas block

At this point it was time to reinstall the CMT handguard and check to see how it fit. Flipped it over and definitely good to go! The new Cross Machine Tool JAG .936 Gas Block did the trick and my barrel is now truly Free Floating.

Only thing left to do now is get this blaster to the range. I’ll have a full review of the BSF Barrels 16″ barrel coming soon. If you’re looking for an affordable low profile gas block you can’t go wrong with the new Cross Machine Tool JAG Gas Blocks.

Ballistic Advantage sneakily introduced a new barrel the other day and man is it sweet. The new barrel is an 18″ .223 Wylde Rifle Length SPR barrel from their Premium Series line of barrels but this one features some of the most aggressive flutes that I’ve seen on any barrel. The fluting not only looks amazing but at the same time makes for a really light weight 18″ barrel. If you’re looking for a great looking barrel that is sure to shoot even better for your next build, check out the new Ballistic Advantage Fluted 18″ Premium SPR Barrel.

This .223 Wylde chambered 18 inch barrel is machined from 416 Stainless Steel with a bead blasted finish. Our Premium Series Barrels feature a FailZero Nickel Boron Coated Extended M4 Feed Ramp Extension.

This barrel features some of the most aggressive and weight reducing flutes on the market. Coming in at a total weight of 28 oz. We’ve managed to cut almost a pound out of the barrel all while not sacrificing one ounce of accuracy!

If you still think Geissele only makes amazing triggers, you need to start thinking differently about Geissele. They have and still do make some of the best rails on the market but over that past few years they have added things like Armorers Tools, Optic Mounts, Charging Handles and now … the Maritime Bolt Catch. Think of the Maritime Bolt Catch as a bolt catch with a larger surface area and more aggressive texture. What this does that other aftermarket bolt catch’s don’t is it extends the controls closer to the index finger of a left handed shooter so they can manipulate the bolt catch with their index finger without taking their hand off the grip.

Geissele Automatics Maritime Bolt Catch 1

“The Geissele Maritime Bolt Catch is designed with the warfighter in mind and will work with any lower receiver designed to accept a mil-spec M16/M4 Carbine bolt catch. The increased surface area promotes ease of function when locking back the bolt or releasing the bolt after a magazine change. In addition, the extended controls add an increased functionality for left handed shooters who no longer have to break their grip to manipulate the bolt catch. Left handed shooters can easily reach the controls using the index finger of their left hand making magazine changes and locking the bolt back much more fast and efficient. Aggressive checkering covers the surface of the levers giving the Geissele Maritime Bolt Catch a textured surface that enables positive feedback to the shooters hand when being used with gloves or at night. Manufactured from properly heat treated 8620 steel and manganese phosphate coated, the Geissele Maritime Bolt Catch is intended to serve as an enhanced mil-spec replacement and assist in giving our warfighters overmatch capability with the M16/M4 carbine platform.”

Geissele Automatics Maritime Bolt Catch 1

Whether you’re a lefty or righty, there are benefits to be had here and coming from Geissele you know it will be top notch quality. Thankfully the price is extremely competitive with other aftermarket bolt catch’s with an MSRP of just $29. I’ve ordered a couple to try out and you can too at www.Geissele.com.

A few weeks ago we introduced you guys to the new Stealth Recoil Spring from Armaspec. The Stealth Recoil Spring is a drop-in replacement for your standard AR Buffer and Buffer Spring that will make the action quieter and smoother. The idea is not new but the amazing pricing is! We knew these would be coming out soon but didn’t know where until today. Rainier Arms has the exclusive offering of the SRS-Carbine Stealth Recoil Spring which is equivalent to a 3.3oz buffer and carbine spring. The intro price is just $64.95 which is too good of a deal to pass up. Get yours now at www.RainierArms.com.

Armaspec introduced a few new products this year at SHOT Show but the one I know many people are super excited about is the new Stealth Recoil Spring. The Stealth Recoil Spring is a drop-in replacement for your AR15 buffer and buffer spring that eliminates the noise from the spring rubbing on the inside of the buffer tube and helps the rifle function quieter and smoother. They also incorporated a rubber o-ring on the face of the Stealth Recoil Spring that removes any metal on metal contact.

The Stealth Recoil Spring comes in 5 variations.
– SRS-Carbine at about 3.3oz equivalent
– SRS-H at around 3.8oz equivalent
– SRS-H2 at around 4.7oz equivalent
– SRS-9 at around 5.3oz equivalent
– SRS-H3 at around 5.6oz equivalent

Another awesome thing about the new Stealth Recoil Spring is the price. Armaspec has kept the price to a very affordable $79. At that price, if they work as advertised, I’ll be using these in many builds going forward. These are showing out of stock now but sounds like they should be available for purchase very soon at www.Armaspec.com.

I’ve been known to tinker and tweak my guns until I get them running perfect. One of the AR’s I’ve done this the most on is my Quarter Circle 10 9mm. The blowback operation of these 9mm guns creates a ton of energy and gets the BCG moving at a very high rate creating a lot more felt recoil than you would ever guess and can also lead to beating up and breaking parts like bolt catches, etc. I’ve mostly been swapping around different springs and buffers going heavier and heavier.

QuarterCircle10 9mm Buffer Setup

KAK Industry just rolled out a brand new 9mm Configurable Buffer Kit that lets you swap out weights inside the buffer to adjust the overall weight of the buffer in stages up to 10 ounces.

KAK Industry 9mm Configurable Buffer Kit

This new KAK 9mm Configurable Buffer Kit would have really come in handy while I was trying to figure out the perfect buffer weight to get my build running like a sewing machine. It is also perfect for making adjustments for Suppressed, UnSuppressed, Subsonic Rounds, Full Auto, etc. If you’re tweaking your AR9, you definitely need to check out this new 9mm Configurable Buffer Kit from KAK Industry.

The guys at Fortis Manufacturing never stop! They are always looking at unique and innovative ways to improve or redesign parts for the AR. Their new LA Stock or Lever Action Stock is an all aluminum collapsible stock that can be adjusted using the handle that looks and moves much like a Lever Action rifle. Once you’ve adjusted the stock you use the Lever Action to clamp down on the buffer tube making for a stock with absolutely zero wobble. So far we just have computer generated photos which you can see below. I’ll be sure to update this article as more details and pictures become available.

When designing our newest line to our Fortis family of products, we spent a lot of time thinking about the over all design and function of our buttstock. Lightweight? Of course, we helped start the change in the industry with our lightweight designs – but we also like our products to be robust and withstand the abuse we throw at it. Form as well as function each and every product we introduce – that’s Fortis.

I personally run exclusively CMC and Geissele/ALG triggers in my guns. Not because I have to but because they are awesome and I choose to use them. However, this new “Saber” from James Madison Tactical is intriguing purely because of the price point. The Saber is a single stage drop-in trigger with a 3.5-4.0 pound pull weight. Rainier Arms has secured the first run of these triggers at an introductory price of $89.95. I personally have not used one of these triggers but if I wanted to upgrade my stock trigger and couldn’t afford a CMC or Geissele this is something I would consider.

The other day I took some time to start sighting in my new 20″ .308 upper I just built for my FALKOR Defense rifle. Shot this awesome 100yd 3-shot sub-1/2-MOA ( .4935″ ) group with a 20″ Criterion Barrels match barrel. I realize it is just a 3-shot group but I’m very impressed so far. I was shooing some PNW Arms 175gr “Sniper” Match 7.62×51 ammunition. I had a few other really nice groups but this was my last and tightest group of the day. I only have room for a 100yd range on my property but my buddy has a 500yd gong that I think I need to ring with this baby.

New Frontier Armory is always pumping out awesome new products so it was no surprise to see their new Extra Heavy Blowback 8-Ounce Buffer pop up on their Facebook page. You might be asking…”What is a Blowback Buffer and why does it need to weigh a whopping 8-ounces?”. Well, it all has to do with Pistol Caliber AR’s.

Instead of using a gas system like a Direct Impingement AR to cycle the weapon, most Pistol Caliber AR’s (9mm, .40, .357 Sig, .45, etc) all use Blowback Operation. With a Blowback system their is a ton of energy throwing that BCG back and unless you do something to slow it down, it creates more felt recoil and it can tear things apart or cause excess wear. With Blowback ARs there is no Gas Block to adjust so your only option is to adjust the buffer weight. In comes the Extra Heavy 8-ounce Blowback Buffer from New Frontier Armory.

8-Oz-Buffer-02

In my personal 9mm build I am running a 5.3 ounce H3 buffer. There is still more felt recoil than there needs to be but there aren’t too many buffer options out there that weigh more than the H3 buffer. NFA’s 8oz Blowback Buffer is made of solid Stainless Steel with an overall length of 4″ and would be a great next step in slowing down the BCG so its not slamming back so hard. It’s priced right too at just $39.99.

So, if you’re looking to smooth out your Pistol Caliber AR, the The New Frontier Armory Extra Heavy 8oz Blowback Buffer is definitely an option to look into. You can check them out at www.NewFrontierArmory.com.
