NEW!! BCM KeyMod Rail Covers Are In and They Are Awesome

Posted on July 22nd, 2015 by ar15news

If you’ve been active on social medial lately you’ve probably seen some sneak peeks at the new BCM (Bravo Company Mfg) super low profile KeyMod rail covers. For those of you who have been anxiously waiting to get some for yourself, the wait is now over. The new BCM KeyMod Rail Panels are now available in a kit that consists of five 5.5 inch long covers that will fit any KeyMod rail. I got my hands on a few of them and immediately put them on my BCM 16″ ELW upper with a BCM KMR 13″ rail.

BCM KeyMod Rail Panel Kit 1

Each BCM KeyMod Rail Panel will cover 7 KeyMod slots but can be cut to any shorter length to fit in shorter runs if needed. For instance, on my BCM upper I have their KAG (Kinesthetic Angled Grip) installed and have 4 KeyMod slots open in front of it. I only needed a short piece to cover where my index and middle fingers contact the rail so I grabbed my super sharp stabby thing from Matt Helm Knives and cut a two slot section to go there and the remaining 5 slots were installed on the side behind my BCM KeyMod 1913 Light Mount.

BCM KeyMod Rail Panel Kit 2

The BCM KeyMod Rail Panels are more than just a cool looking rail cover for open KeyMod slots. They offer an extreme increase in grip due to the aggressive texture. The texture on the covers actually reminds me a lot of grip tape but doesn’t feel like it will tear your hands up. If you look close you can see the BCM and Star logo on the cover.

The BCM 16″ ELW upper with the 13″ KMR is a super light weight, durable and accurate upper. Adding the new rail covers is a small add-on but an enhancement none the less. I will be adding more of the BCM KeyMod Rail Panels to my other KeyMod rails and you can too. BCM currently has the black covers in-stock for just $9.95 per 5 panel kit. Soon they will be offering FDE, OD Green and Foliage as well. Head on over to www.BravoCompanyUSA.com to order some for yourself.

Low-Pro KeyMod Bipod Mount from Impact Weapons Components

Posted on July 6th, 2015 by ar15news

For a while now I’ve been wanting to purchase a couple more Harris bipods and pair them with the Impact Weapons Components KeyMod Bipod Mount. About a month ago I happened to be messing around on the Impact Weapons Components website and saw that they now carry Harris bipods and couldn’t help myself. I purchased two bipods and two mounts. Now that I’ve had them installed and using them for a while I wanted to do a quick writeup on the two different rifles I have them installed on.

IWC KeyMod Bipod Mount 1

INSTALLATION

Aside from having to remove the rail (in most circumstances), the installation was very simple. You have the KeyMod Bipod Stud and two metal snap rings. The IWC KeyMod Bipod Mount is CNC’d from Stainless Steel with a Melonite finish and weighs less than 1 ounce.

IWC KeyMod Bipod Mount 1

Place the Bipod Mount into the large circle portion of the desired KeyMod slot as shown below. Once in place, drop one of the metal snap rings over the shaft of the Bipod Mount work the snap ring around the flared portion and down into the groove closest to the surface of your handguard.

THE SPR

First is the obvious setup which would be on a rifle with a higher powered scope such as an SPR or DMR. I built an 18″ SPR using a Mega Arms billet set and barrel with a Fortis Mfg 14″ Switch KeyMod rail. Instead of installing some adapters and rail sections I opted to install the IWC KeyMod Bipod Mount and Harris Bipod. This is an absolutely awesome, rock solid setup. There’s zero wobble and it looks pretty awesome. This is pretty much what this product was designed for and it shows. I’ve been shooting this SPR with the Bipod quite a bit lately and love it.

THE NON-SPR

One of the most important features of the IWC KeyMod Bipod Mount is how small it is. In fact it is so small that I started thinking about putting it on a rifle that I wouldn’t normally use with a Bipod but could throw one on in a pinch. This 16″ AR has just a 1-4 optic and a Vertical Forward Grip. I’ve also installed the Bipod Mount a few KeyMod slots in-front of the Vertical Grip which actually works very well as a super low profile Handstop while not in use with a Bipod.

If the need arises, in a matter of seconds I can install a Bipod on this rifle turning it into a completely different beast. Now instead of a run and gun rifle it is capable of engaging and making longer range shots.

If you couldn’t tell already, I really like the IWC KeyMod Bipod Mount. It is very inexpensive, light weight and versatile. When I purchased mine, I used our “ar15news” discount code (it’s technically for you guys but I used it too :) ) to save 5% and got the bipod for $68 and the mount for $8 ($76 total) which I think is a bargain. If you’re looking for something similar to this you can check it out for yourself at www.ImpactWeaponsComponents.com.

I don’t browse the forum AR15.com very often but yesterday I saw that our friends from SLR Rifleworks were looking for input regarding a prototype Quad Rail that they have made. They already make tons of KeyMod and M-LOK rails and basically want to see what kind of interest there is in a Quad Rail based off of a similar design. If you can, leave a comment HERE and let us know what you think of the rail, any changes you would like to see and if you would buy one.

Recently I started a new build. It was centered around a few key components, the Rainier Arms Mod3 billet receiver set, Rainier Arms 16″ .223 Wylde barrel made from a Rock Creek Blank, the LANTAC USA E-BCG and the new Fortis Manufacturing 14″ REV II MLOK rail. I just recently finished this build and will begin the process of shooting and reviewing it. Until then I wanted to give you an initial impression of the new REV II MLOK rail.

I have used many Fortis Manufacturing REV rails over the past few years and really like them a lot. Lately Fortis has come out with a few new rails including the new REV II rails which look great. As you would assume they are a modified version of the original REV rail that deletes the bottom picatinny rail section and forward side rail sections for a super sleek design, lighter weight and more flexibility in mounting your KeyMod or MLOK accessories.

Fortis REV II MLOK 1

INSTALLATION

The REV II rails mount directly to a Mil Spec AR-15 barrel nut with a rock solid clamp just like the original REV rail. This type of mount is great for a few reasons. One, it creates an insanely solid union between the upper and rail. It also makes it easier for users to upgrade from the standard plastic “Glacier Guard” or other hand guards that use a Delta Ring as they will not need any armorers tools to remove the old barrel nut and install a proprietary barrel nut. Just cut the Delta Ring off, remove the spring, install your low profile gas block and your REV II rail will be on in minutes. Installation of accessories can be done while the rail is installed but can be done much easier by quickly removing the rail instead of installing them while on the rifle.

FIT AND FINISH

Fit and finish on the Fortis Manufacturing rails is second to none with a very nice dark black Type III Hard Coat Anodizing, smooth edges and aggressive lines. Not to mention they just look stinking sexy! As you can see in the picture below I also used the Fortis Manufacturing Low Profile Gas Block which looks great with its similar lines.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Overall I am very impressed with the Fortis Manufacturing REV II rail and would put them very high on the “Recommended List”. They offer these in both KeyMod and MLOK versions all the way from 7″ long to 14″ long.  So far there really isn’t anything I would say I don’t like about the rail. One note I would make is that anti-rotation tabs are a great feature but as you may already know, not all  billet uppers will accommodate them unless they manufacture of that upper has designed it to work with a rial with anti-rotation tabs. This is not an issue with the rail but more of an issue with manufacturers of billet uppers. The Fortis Billet Upper and Rainier Arms Billet Upper work great with them and many others will too. Check out the entire build below. Once I’ve had some time behind the trigger on this build I will update with more reviews on the different components.

Fortis Mfg Introduces the New REV II Rail with M-LOK

Posted on April 29th, 2015 by ar15news

**Update** – Fortis just released the first run of REV II M-LOK rails on www.REVOLVR.com. 4-29-15 3pm EST.

Back in January we broke the news that Fortis Mfg was introducing a new version of the original REV rail called the REV II. Now we are here to spill the beans on the newest version of the REV II which now features M-LOK. As you may already know, M-LOK is a mounting system that is being heavily promoted and backed by Magpul. This means that all of their cool new grips, light mounts, rail panels, etc. will have an M-LOK option and explains why everybody wants an M-LOK rail.

Fortis REV II MLOK 1

Fortis REV II MLOK 2

Then new REV II M-LOK rail continues with the same design characteristics of the REV II KeyMod rail in that it mounts directly to a mil spec barrel nut, features a full run of M-LOK at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock, offers 2 QD sling attachment points at 3 and 6 o’clock at the very front of the rail as well as two more in the same spot at the rear of the rail. As you’ve probably already seen, Fortis is well known for their aggressive styling and the new REV II M-LOK rail definitely fits in that statement.

Fortis REV II MLOK 5

The combination of the super lightweight yet rugged design of the REV II and the M-LOK mounting system means this will be another home run rail system for Fortis Mfg. The REV II M-LOK rail has not been released for purchase yet but you can sign up to be notified the moment it is. Just head on over and enter your email address at www.FortisMfg.com.
