Lantac has just introduced their own spin on a ratcheting castle nut and end plate combo that does not require the end user to stake the castle nut. The Lantac system uses a castle nut with pretty aggressive teeth  machined on one side that faces towards the end plate which engage with a tooth on the end plate that is under spring tension. These two lock together for a setup that cannot vibrate loose which is why you don’t have to stake it.

Lantac RPS Ratche Plate System end plate

The Lantac RPS, Ratchet Plate System removes the necessity to stake castle nuts in place after fitting. It also provides a QD Sling attachement point directly below the buffer tube. It utilises a one piece designed ratched tooth and arm, machined directly into the anti rotation plate itself.

The enhanced castle nut has an aggressive grip pattern and radially machined groves that register with the spring like arm and tooth on the plate, causing the nut to be retained in place. The nut cannot vibrate loose through firing but can be removed through the use of an armourers wrench if necessary. The teeth and groves are all internal when fitted together so they cannot be accidentally damaged. lighter weight with additional functionality over the standard original design.

I spoke with Brett at Lantac today and he said these are currently in production so look for them to be available for purchase soon. I unfortunately could not nail him down on a price or exact release date.

Pretty sure I have a QD End Plate on just about every rifle I’ve ever built but they all require you to get your big (sometimes gloved) hands into this tiny area to attach/detach the QD sling swivel. The new Sloped Quick Disconnect End Plate (SQD-EP) addresses that issue and gives you a nice ambi QD sling mount. It also covers up some of the castle nut for a cleaner look. I will definitely pick one of these up for my next build and see how it goes. Looks like a great design. Read more about it and check out the pics below.

 P5T SQD-EPP5T SQD-EP 3

The Phase 5 Sloped Quick Disconnect End Plate (SQD-EP) was designed to replace the standard AR15/M4 carbine end plate. While still meeting the requirements of the original design, the SQD-EP is lighter and QD Swivel compatible.

PROUDLY MADE IN THE USA FROM USA RAW BILLET 7075-T6 ALUMINUM.

– Compatible with mil-spec carbine reciever extensions, commercial-spec reciever extensions, and all Phase 5 Pistol Buffer Tubes on nearly all AR15/M4/.308 AR Variant lower recievers.
– Lightweight and sturdy 7075-T6 billet aluminum construction is about 80% stronger than 6061-T6 aluminum.
– Uses a standard AR15/M4 carbine Lower reciever extension castle nut (not included).
– Accepts all push button QD swivels and QD slings.
– QD mount is at a 30 Degree angle from the lower reciever to allow a 360 Degree rotation for ambidextrious use.
– Lighter than the standard stamped steel reciever extention end plate (0.39 oz vs 0.48 oz.

The SQD-EP is in-stock and shipping now. Normally I would just link to the manufacturer  (Phase5WSI.com) for new product announcements but I also just noticed that these are available at an intro price at www.RainierArms.com now through 9/15/16.

Midwest Industries just announced their new Heavy Duty QD End Plate. The new Heavy Duty QD End Plate is machined from a single piece of billet 4140 Tool Steel instead of a two piece design where the QD cup is pressed into the End Plate. This is a much stronger design and means there is no way the QD cup can get pulled out under pressure. The good part is that it is pretty closely priced to other QD End Plates on the market, making it easy for you to choose whichever End Plate is the best for your build. Will be available soon on www.MidwestIndustriesInc.com.

Gear Sector recently introduced their new Mod3 1913 Rail Mount Offset QD Socket. Gear Sector is known for making high quality, battle proven products and the Mod3 builds on that reputation. By offsetting the QD socket they were able to make it about half as wide as their original sling mount and also makes a more low profile design. Weight was reduced by 30% for the Mod3 with the weight coming in at less than 1/2 of an ounce including mounting hardware which is pretty impressive.

These offset QD Sockets work great for adjusting where on your rail your 2-point sling attaches. The mount is low profile enough that you can easily run it on the top rail section without it being in the way at all or could be mounted in either direction on any rail section to accommodate grips, etc. I placed mine on the top rail section just to the rear of where my support hand grips the rail as you can see in the pictures below.

The Patented Pending Gear Sector™ Rail Mount Offset QD Socket provides a forward mounting location for those who wish to utilize our two or three point sling with our QD push button adapter. It can also be used with a variety of other quick detach push button swivels commercially available. We designed the mount to fit perfectly flush with the Tango Down® rail panels to provide an uninterrupted rail space. The socket was designed and machined to prevent rotation which in turn prevents your sling from becoming twisted. It offsets the quick detach swivel 45 degrees allowing the weapon to hang more naturally when slung across the chest in a ready position. It comes complete with all mounting hardware, screws, hex keys, and Vibra-Tite® to make installation fast and easy. Mod 3 components feature a 30% reduction in weight; an 1144 StressProof® heat treated full width steel index, as well as the ability to index your swivel in 8 different clock positions!

MATERIALS & CONSTRUCTION

The Gear Sector™ Rail Mount Offset QD Socket is constructed using multiple base materials and is precision CNC machined from billet stock. Material and finish processes are outlined below:

Magpul recently introduced their new MS1 Padded Sling. The MS1 Padded Sling by itself is an adjustable 2-point sling with a wider padded section of webbing towards the middle that does not come with any attachment points other than the webbing. IWC has taken the Magpul MS1 Padded Sling to the next step by adding their patented 2-To-1 Point Triglide and two (2) Heavy Duty Push Button QD Swivels to the sling making it the complete package. With this setup the user can easily use the sling as a 2-point sling or attach the front QD to the 2-To-1 Point Triglide and use it as a Single Point Sling.

A buddy of mine (UWone77) has been playing around with some new products from Arisaka Defense and he seems to be very happy with them. Arisaka Defense is a brand new company (literally brand new, as in “no website yet” new) but they seem to already have some nice designs and understand what components people are looking for. The first components they are making available will be an M-LOK and KeyMod light mount, M-LOK QD Sling Attachment Point and a Light Mount that is designed to mount directly to a Centurion Arms CMR rail. I’ve listed some pictures below. As I mentioned their website hasn’t been finished yet but they have a Facebook page that they have started so you can follow along as they introduce new products.

I wanted to show you guys a quick visual comparison between two of my favorite Geissele rails, the SMR MK4 and SMR MK5. Both are fairly new (released in the last year) and I know it can be hard to figure out what’s what just by looking at the “MKX” naming system. The Geissele SMR MK4 and MK5 are some of the most solidly built KeyMod rails out there. As you’ll see below, you can’t go wrong with either one as they both are awesome options. Click on the images for a larger view.

GEISSELE AUTOMATICS SMR (SUPER MODULAR RAIL) MK4

First lets look at the MK4. The Geissele SMR MK4 is kind of a hybrid rail. It has KeyMod mounting slots at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions with small 1913 picatinny rail sections up front at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock and a full length picatinny rail at 12 o’clock as well. There are a few other rails like this on the market and as weird as it may seem it makes a lot of sense. The number one best selling KeyMod accessory is…the 1913 rail sections which people always mount toward the front of a KeyMod rail.

620 Geissele SMR MK4 4

One of the main reasons people are hesitant to switch from their quad rails over to a new system such as KeyMod is because they have so many “Quad Rail” accessories, especially light mounts. The MK4 allows you to have an integrated quad rail section to mount your lights to while offering KeyMod slots to use for the popular Rail Covers from companies like Noveske, etc. I’ve personally found that the Geissele rails are so well finished that I don’t even need any rail covers.

620 Geissele SMR MK4 4

I really dig the look of the MK4. Just something about the use of both 1913 and KeyMod just looks cool. As you can see in the pictures below, it makes for one awesome looking rifle and offers a super solid rail with lots of options. The MK4 would be perfect for those who are either on the fence about 1913 vs KeyMod or those who have specific 1913 light mounts, bipods, etc. that you want to still use and don’t want to buy extra mounts to make them compatible.

620 Geissele SMR MK4 4

GEISSELE AUTOMATICS SMR (SUPER MODULAR RAIL) MK5

Now lets take a look at the MK5. The Geissele SMR MK5 is built how KeyMod was designed to be used with KeyMod mounting slots all the way out to the tip of the rail. This gives you the most flexibility with mounting KeyMod accessories such as Light Mounts, Handstops, QD Sling Mounts, rail sections, etc.

620 Geissele SMR MK5 1

As you’ll notice, the KeyMod slots are at the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions with a full length picatinny rail section at 12 o’clock like the MK4 does. Both rails look very similar, however with the MK5 there are no short rail sections at the the front of the rail and there are no front QD Sling Mounts. This design is all about letting the “KeyMod Convert” have as much flexibility as possible in mounting their new KeyMod accessories.

620 Geissele SMR MK5 1

620 Geissele SMR MK5 1

As I mentioned before, there really is not wrong decision to be made here. I love both of these rails. Its more of a personal preference thing when it comes to deciding between these two rails. Both feature the amazingly high degree of quality you would expect to find with a Geissele rail and look freaking sweet.

I had planned on waiting for Geissele to get the newer MK5’s in-stock but they are such a hot item I decided to just give you a link to a Geissele dealer and AR15NEWS friend, Weapon Oufitters, since they have both the MK4 and MK5 in-stock right now. That way if you like what you see you can pick one up for yourself. I’ve also put some information below for great KeyMod accessories too.

You can purchase the Geissele SMR MK4 and MK5 rails at www.WeaponOutfitters.com

As always, you can peruse the Geissele.com website as well but with the high demand of these rails they are not all in-stock.
