“Sales are down unnecessarily”, said Evan Green business development manager at Griffin Armament. “When the markets have been rallying and jobs are being produced, consumer misunderstanding of the legislative process and the Hearing Protection Act, is hurting an otherwise stable industry. Many people who want to buy are sitting on discretionary spending in the hopes that HPA will soon pass. The entire industry has come to a very similar conclusion that it will be quite a while until HPA is able to pass if at all despite almost unanimous support. People not buying right now is only further delaying them from enjoying silencers. It just doesn’t make any sense and this shouldn’t have happened.  Unfortunately a lot of miss information was flying around and nobody in the industry was trying to educate consumers on how long it actually takes to get a bill to pass, what percentage of bills pass, that the legislative process usually takes hundreds of days etc. This bill in some form has been presented to congress since 2015 and this congressional session is closing in a few months, so it looks like it will be rolling to another year.  Griffin is just as hopeful as everyone else for the HPA. However having a realistic viewpoint on it is critical to the survival of the silencer industry and the Americans who work hard to move it forward.  The ‘Make Silencers Great Again’ promotion is the most we can do as a company to try to encourage spending right now.” Evan continued. “It’s honestly an amazing time to be a buyer.  I remember when I was younger and was spending my money on an OPS INC can and promotions didn’t exist in the market. You could barely even get a dealer to handle the sale for you. Muzzle devices had to be purchased separately from the silencer, etc. I remember having to help my local class 3 dealer to understand the paperwork because he did so few transactions. But times have changed and there are plenty of dealers on the market selling products at great prices and walking the customer through the purchase quickly while keeping them informed. This program is also a great way to let consumers know that we appreciate them, we’ve been wanting to so something like this for a while.”

Their goal is to provide quality products and information for anyone that would like to build an AR. You may not know the name but you’ve most likely seen their products as they were heavily covered during SHOT Show 2016 on the new Primary Weapons Systems “MOD2” and Agency Arms “Project Classified” rifles. Some of the new products that were made for those two rifles are now available for purchase separately through Bootleg Inc. Those product are the Bootleg PicMod rail, Bootleg Lightweight Adjustable Carrier (great for suppressor use) and the Bootleg Lightweight Upper Receiver. Photos of the new Agency Arms “CLASSIFIED” Rifle

Posted on January 27th, 2016 by ar15news

At SHOT Show 2016, Agency Arms announced a partnership between themselves and PWS (Primary Weapon Systems) to offer the Agency Arms Project CLASSIFIED DI rifle. I got permission to share the following photos that as far as I know have not been fully published yet. Aaron Cowan of Sage Dynamics and Agency Arms said this regarding the new rifle…

“Everybody knows there’s ARs all over the place. Why would you choose one brand over another brand? Quality is quality. But there are features on the AR platform that can be improved and when people get together and start thinking about them they find new ways to do things that some people just didn’t think of before. Some times its a little fix, some times its something potentially revolutionary. Not gonna use the word game changer but what I will say is this rifle brings a lot of value added products to the platform that are gonna be something that you might prefer in a rifle system if you’re looking for a new one.” – Aaron Cowan, Sage Dynamics

NEW!! Midwest Industries SP Line of Handguards with 1.75″ ID

Posted on December 14th, 2015 by ar15news

One of the more popular setups in the AR world right now is utilizing a longer rail with a large Inside Diameter (ID) that will accommodate either a suppressor or a larger blast diffuser muzzle device like the Noveske KX3. Seems like every time I post something about a new rail the number one question is “Whats the Inside Diameter?” for that very reason. Midwest Industries just introduced their new SP line of hand guards that features a 1.75″ ID which is large enough for many suppressors. The Noveske KX3 at 1.37″ will have plenty of room to be tucked under the rail.

Midwest Industres SP large inside diameter rail 1Midwest Industres SP large inside diameter rail 1

As you can see, M-LOK is the attachment method for these rails and there are plenty of mounting slots to choose from with M-LOK at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock as well as the 45 degree spaces in between. These are definitely worth taking a look at for anyone wanting to mount a larger muzzle device or suppressor underneath the rail. According to their Facebook page they are starting with their 12.65″ long model first and I’m sure additional lengths will follow. $165 including one Magpul rail section and the barrel nut wrench is pretty hard to beat.

Have you ever sat back and wondered “Why exactly are suppressors an NFA controlled item”? If you have you’re not alone. Suppressors do not make a weapon “silent”, they just make them quieter and in many cases quiet enough to be hearing safe. Today, the American Suppressor Association announced that the Hearing Protection Act (HPA) has been introduced into Congress by Rep. Matt Salmon of Arizona. The Act, if approved, will remove the National Firearms Act (NFA) tax and replace the ATF transfer process with an instantaneous NICS background check. This means law abiding citizens would be able to purchase a suppressor in the same way they currently purchase a non-NFA firearm. We know this will be a long battle to get approved but we all need to be contacting our local representatives to make sure they know we need them to support the Hearing Protection Act or HPA. Take a moment to read through the official ASA press release below.

ASA ANNOUNCES HEARING PROTECTION ACT

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The American Suppressor Association (ASA) is pleased to announce the introduction of the Hearing Protection Act (HPA) by Rep. Matt Salmon (AZ-05). This historic piece of legislation will remove suppressors from the purview of the National Firearms Act (NFA), replacing the antiquated federal transfer process with an instantaneous NICS background check. The HPA also includes a provision to refund the $200 transfer tax to applicants who purchase a suppressor after October 22, 2015.

“The American Suppressor Association believes that citizens should not have to pay a tax to protect their hearing while exercising their Second Amendment rights,” said Knox Williams, President and Executive Director of the ASA. “The removal of suppressors from the National Firearms Act has been our ultimate goal since day one. For months, we have worked alongside Rep. Salmon’s office and the National Rifle Association to craft this legislation. Although we recognize that introducing this bill is the first step in what will be a lengthy process to change federal law, we look forward to working with Rep. Salmon and the NRA to advance and ultimately enact this common-sense legislation.”

Also known as silencers, suppressors are the hearing protection of the 21st century sportsman. Despite common Hollywood-based misconceptions, the laws of physics dictate that no suppressor will ever be able to render gunfire silent. Suppressors are simply mufflers for firearms, which function by trapping the expanding gasses at the muzzle, allowing them to slowly cool in a controlled environment. On average, suppressors reduce the noise of a gunshot by 20 – 35 decibels (dB), roughly the same sound reduction as earplugs or earmuffs. In addition to hearing protection, suppressors also mitigate noise complaints from those who live near shooting ranges and hunting lands.

Unfortunately, suppressors have been federally regulated since the passage of the National Firearms Act of 1934. The NFA regulates the transfer and possession of certain types of firearms and devices, including suppressors. Currently, prospective buyers must send in a Form 4 application to the ATF, pay a $200 transfer tax per suppressor, undergo the same background check that is required to purchase a machine gun, and wait months for the ATF to process and approve the paperwork. In stark contrast, many countries in Europe place no regulations on their purchase, possession, or use.

Rep. Salmon’s Hearing Protection Act will fix the flawed federal treatment of suppressors, making it easier for hunters and sportsmen to protect their hearing in the 41 states where private suppressor ownership is currently legal, and the 37 states where hunting with a suppressor is legal. This legislation will remove suppressors from the onerous requirements of the NFA, and instead require purchasers to pass an instant NICS check, the same background check that is used during the sale of long guns. In doing so, law-abiding citizens will remain free to purchase suppressors, while prohibited persons will continue to be barred from purchasing or possessing these accessories.

Griffin Armament SN-ACH Ambi Charging Handle with Gas Port

Posted on August 15th, 2015 by ar15news

The new Griffin Armament SN-ACH or Suppressor Normalized Ambi Configurable Handles are back in-stock. The new SN-ACH ambi charing handle features a gas port on the right side that redirects gas away from the face of the shooter. It also features ambi modular handles that can be easily swapped out for smaller or lager handles.

Griffin Armament SN-ACH 4

Normally when you shoot an AR-15, the gasses that make your gun function are expelled through the ejection port but during suppressed shooting there are excess gasses and pressure that usually forces gas right into the face of the shooter through the charging handle opening at the rear of the upper. By machining a gas port on the portion of the charging handle that is outside of the receiver, the SN-ACH allows most of those excess gasses to exit away from the shooter.

If you’re looking for an extremely robust ambi charing handle or shoot suppressed and are tired of getting gas to the face, the Griffin Armament SN-ACH is an option to look at. Head on over to www.GriffinArmament.com and snag one before they’re sold out again.

New Product!! POF-USA “Dictator” Adjustable Gas Block

Posted on July 10th, 2015 by ar15news

POF-USA RELEASES A 9-POSITION ADJUSTABLE, DIRECT IMPINGEMENT, LOW PROFILE GAS BLOCK.

PHOENIX, AZ (June 2015) – With suppressor ownership at an all-time high, there have been new requirements presented to achieve ultimate reliability. Each suppressor creates its own back pressures, which in turn makes the AR15 style rifle increase or decrease its speed. If the rifle is running too fast or too slow, the rifle has a higher chance of malfunction and/or exposure to increased component stress/wear.

Introducing the problem solver. The DIctator adjustable gas block gives the end user 9 different gas positions to fine tune their rifle system for whatever variable has been introduced ranging from a suppressor to different ammunition types. With a simple testing and tuning process (instructions provided in packaging), the DIctator will give the operator the knowledge to keep his/her rifle running at a consistent speed.

Modern handguards have continued to get longer and thinner, which proves to be effective when combined with modern shooting techniques. This fact was in our minds the entire time while designing The DIctator. This new gas block will fit under rail systems with an ID of 1 3/8”. The initial models offered will be gas blocks set up for .750” barrels in both a mid-length and carbine position gas system. Each DIctator gas block comes with a stainless steel straight gas tube installed and a specifically designed tool to allow the user complete adjustment without the possibility of getting burned by a hot gas block during the tuning process.

Today, I’m excited to start a new series of articles documenting the process of LEGALLY building a suppressor from home. Building your own suppressor allows you to use an NFA Trust and e-File a Form 1 which can drastically speed up the process. It also can be much less expensive than purchasing a suppressor from a manufacturer. So here’s your invitation to follow along with us as we experience a completely new part of NFA Ownership.

Many AR-15 owners have built an AR using an 80% lower receiver and even more know about the legalities and rules regarding it. Just the opposite can be said for building a suppressor from home. Up until a few years ago, the state of Michigan (where I live) did not even allow Suppressor ownership. Once that changed  I started learning a bit more about it and saw that some people built suppressors themselves. Building a suppressor in some ways is very similar to an 80% Lower in that most of the work is done but it requires some additional machining to complete. One huge key difference is that unfortunately you do have to register it with the BATFE and pay for a $200 Tax Stamp, unlike an 80% lower. This article will focus on the components of the suppressor build but the next article will focus solely on using an NFA Trust to submit a Form 1 Suppressor build.

WHAT COMPANY SHOULD I BUY FROM

There are quite a few websites that sell kits that are typically called “Solvent Traps” which consist of a tube, and additional components, all of varying quality. I really wanted to the best components possible to mirror how we at AR15NEWS build our ARs. Through a recommendation from a friend and additional research I turned to SD Tactical Arms. SD Tactical Arms is a Veteran Owned, Class 7 Type 2 FFL manufacturer that produces very high quality “Solvent Trap” components, rifles, etc. and has an outstanding reputation amongst DIY’ers.

THE COMPONENTS

Of course AR15NEWS readers only deserve the best so we are going all out on this build. For our 7.62mm suppressor build we will be using the SD Tactical Arms Titanium 7.6 inch “Solvent Trap” tube and thread protectors (end caps) which come to 8 inches overall length, Titanium Blast Chamber and Spacer Material, Stainless Steel Freeze Plugs that will be formed and drilled to become baffles and the new Challenge Coin (helps keep the suppressor threaded on tight). Once finished, this suppressor will thread directly onto their muzzle brakes and I have a 5.56 and 7.62 brake so it can be used on multiple rifles. Owning these solvent trap components is perfectly legal as they have not been drilled and assembled as a suppressor…yet.

SD Tactical Arms Titanium Suppressor Build 1

THE “CHALLENGE COIN”

Here’s a closeup look at the “Challenge Coin”. Currently it just looks cool but once our Form 1 is approved we can machine out the center of the coin and insert it in the blast chamber of the suppressor which will help keep the suppressor on tight without needing a locking mechanism on the mount.

SD Tactical Arms Titanium Suppressor Build 1

THREADED MUZZLE BRAKES

The SD Tactical Arms muzzle brakes have ACME threads on them allowing you to mount your suppressor directly to them using the threaded end cap. I’m sure I’ll be purchasing a few more of these brakes so I can install the suppressor on different rifles with ease.

SD Tactical Arms Titanium Suppressor Build 1`

ENGRAVING ON YOUR SUPPRESSOR BODY

As I mentioned above, to build a suppressor you have to submit a Form 1 at which time you have to put in your Trust Name, City and State, choose a Model Name and assign a Serial Number for your suppressor. Once the Form 1 is approved you have to have that information engraved onto your suppressor. I was very pleased to find out that SD Tactical Arms will engrave the information for you, as seen in the image below, for just $25. If you know this information at the time of purchase they will engrave it before sending your parts to you.

SD Tactical Arms Titanium Suppressor Build 1Click to enlarge image

HOW MUCH & HOW LONG

You are probably wondering what all of these high quality components cost and if it really is that much cheaper or faster than buying a suppressor. To start, Form 1 Suppressor builds that are e-Filed are taking anywhere from 70-80 days to be approved. Compare that to 3-4 months to purchase a suppressor from a dealer using a Form 4, which can’t be e-filed, or even longer if they have to order that suppressor from the manufacturer and you can see how this is a pretty quick route.

Now lets talk price! Here’s the breakdown:
–  Titanium Muzzle Brake Adapter – $45.99
–  Titanium end cap – $45.99
–  Titanium 7.6″ tube – $73.49
–  Titanium D-cell spacer tube – $29.99
–  Challenge coin – $34.99
–  Muzzle brake – $56.99
–  Stainless freeze plugs – $3.39 each x 12 = $40.68
–  Double sided centering tool – $22.99
–  Engraving Service – $25

The sum of those parts comes to $376.11 including one muzzle brake for the suppressor to thread onto. Assuming you already have a drill press, carbide drill bits, a vise and a few tools to do the final machining, your cost including the $200 tax stamp would be just $576.11. Keep in mind this cost is for the top of the line components and can be reduced by using different components which are also available at SD Tactical Arms. This type of price range for an 8″ Suppressor that you would purchase from your local FFL would be virtually impossible to find. Most options would run you at a minimum $200-300 more for a very low end suppressor.

At this point I am still waiting for my Form 1 to be approved so I can not do any modification to the parts. Before we get to that I will add an article showing you step by step instructions specifically for e-Filing your Form 1 to build a suppressor and another article explaining the tools needed to turn your Solvent Trap into a Suppressor. As soon as my Form 1 is approved I will document the machining process, assembly and show you how well it shoots.

Until then, you should get a head start on your own build by visiting www.SDTacticalArms.com to pick out your own components. You can also visit the SD Tactical Arms Forum for information, tips, instructions, etc. from the pros.

Don’t forget to get your NFA Trust from Coyote Rifleworks. I have used mine twice now and couldn’t be happier. They are just $95 with same day turnaround.

Be sure to bookmark our AR15NEWS Form 1 Suppressor Build thread to keep tabs on the process.

NEW!! Griffin Armament M4SD 5.56 Suppressor

Posted on March 5th, 2015 by ar15news

We all know that owning Suppressors is an expensive addiction to have can make it very hard for most people to even get started in their NFA ownership. Thankfully, Griffin Armament has brought back the M4SD suppressor, a more affordable option versus their flagship M4SD II suppressor.

The M4SD has fewer parts and is faster to machine than their flagship M4SD2 and M4SD-K suppressors so they are able to pass on the savings to the consumers. The M4SD still has the same billet construction and QD system but does not come with a mount (muzzle device that the suppressor mounts to). Instead you can mount the M4SD to an inexpensive A2 compensator or upgrade to any of the Griffin Armament M4SD suppressor mounts. Take a look at the pictures and details below. Whether you are ready now or hoping to start purchasing suppressors in the future, the Griffin Armament M4SD is definitely worth putting on your list of suppressors to own.

The M4SD suppressor is back- providing the original project goals- an affordable, sound suppressor with support for compatible A2 compensators. Taking the lessons learned from the M4SD II flagship development program, we simplified and produced a more economical suppressor and are passing on the savings to the customer. The M4SD retains the welded, 17-4 billet construction and is as durable as the flagship suppressor. Full auto rated, equipped with a user friendly snap on interface, backed by an extensive muzzle device family- the M4SD suppressor is a great suppressor for the entry level NFA enthusiast desiring a QD interface.
