AERO Precision Weekly Deal

Posted on February 19th, 2015 by ar15news

Each week AERO Precision puts out special deal that everyone can take advantage of. I am going to do my best to keep track of these deals each week and give you guys a heads up on them. This weeks deal is pretty simple. They are offering an 18″ .308 Stainless Steel Barrel with a .936″ low profile gas block and rifle length gas tube for only $290. This is definitely a sweet start to a new .308 build which can tend to get pretty pricey. If you’re looking for options that will help you not break the bank, you should take a look at this deal.

First Look – SI Defense .308 Ambi Rifle Build

Posted on February 17th, 2015 by ar15news

Over the past few months we’ve had the opportunity to work with the guys from SI-Defense in helping spread the word about their new products including their new .308 billet receiver set that features “mirrored ambi controls”. Remember that term as you’ll see what we mean soon. Now that the .308 Ambi receiver sets are hot off the machines, SI-Defense asked if we would want to build our own rifle using these receivers…and of course we’re not gonna turn that down. :) So this is the start to our multipart article showing the rifle we built, what parts we used and then we’ll do additional articles once we’ve actually had some time to shoot it for a while.

The first thing that arrived were the SI-Defense .308 Ambi billet receivers. The mirrored ambi controls on the receivers are pretty mind blowing. When you push on the Bolt Catch, Bolt Release or Mag Release on one side the same button on the other side moves as well. It really is pretty amazing that the ambi controls are mirrored and not just an added lever that is completely different than the control on the right side. The dust cover is pretty cool too in that it is easy to remove/install even with the handguard installed because it snaps into place.

A few months ago Rainier Arms introduced their new .308 UltraMatch BCG. Once I knew this build was going down I promptly went on the Rainier Arms website and purchased one. The finish on this thing is a really nice deep Black Nitride that is super smooth. The angled cuts toward the front and fluting at the rear of the carrier look pretty sweet.

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1

If you’re gonna build a gun you definitely need a barrel, right?! Right. I’ve posted about AERO Precision barrels many many times before whenever they have a new model to introduce or a special deal etc. but have never personally used one myself. So for this build I contacted my buddy Chad over at AERO Precision to see if I could get my hands on one of their 16″ Mid Length .308 barrels. They are made of 416 Stainless Steel and I’m really excited to see how well they perform. You might be thinking “A 16 inch .308 build? Most guys do 18 inches or more.” and you’re right but I just built an 18″ like everyone else and wanted do something a bit different. Because I know big bore rifles can be a bit ornery I installed a SLR Rifleworks Sentry Adjustable Low Profile Gas Block along with the Rainier Arms Nitride Mid Length gas tube.

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1

Along with the SLR Rifleworks Sentry Adjustable Gas Block, I also used the SLR Rifleworks SOLO 15″ KeyMod handguard, Hand Stop and their Synergy BCF muzzle device. It truly makes for one killer looking setup and can’t wait to see how well it performs.

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 10

Along with making some pretty amazing ambi receivers, SI-Defense also makes a mean looking ambi charging handle called the MACH10 which stands for Modular Ambi Charging Handle for AR10. This specific one has a neat feature where it latches on the inside of the receiver but they will also offer an outside latching MACH10 and a MACH15 charging handle as well.

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1

As with all of my builds this one includes a Battle Arms Development Ambi Safety. I don’t own a single AR that does not have one and no I don’t get them for free. Its one of those products that I have honestly grown to love and buy them for every build.

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1

Along with upgrading the Safety I also upgraded the Trigger. I usually use either a Geissele or CMC Trigger and decided to try the Geissele S3G trigger in this build. The S3G is not really designed for a rifle with higher recoil as it has a very light trigger pull and could bump-fire easily so I used the heavier spring that comes with it. This is kind of a trial run and will be interesting to see how it performs in a .308.

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1 SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1

Oooohhhh. Look at that sexy beast!! I also added a Trijicon VCOG, Magpul MBUS PRO sights, UBR stock and a MOE+ grip to finish off the build. I think it turned out to be an one of the best looking rifles I’ve built.

These pics are hot off the press as I just finished this build over the weekend. This week will be its maiden voyage to see how well she runs and get the gas system all dialed in. Will update you with an additional article detailing its performance at the range and hopefully some 100 yard groups. If we don’t get accuracy data on the .308 AERO Precision barrel for that article it will be in an additional one for sure. Below is a list of links for the parts we used in this build.

AERO Precision 16″ .223 Wylde Uppers AND 18″ KeyMod Rail

Posted on January 27th, 2015 by ar15news

AERO Precision continues to add new products to their already long list of available products and they keep getting better and better. I remember when they only made stripped uppers and lowers and their COP system and didn’t sell direct. Anymore they are pretty much a one stop shop for building just about any kind of AR configuration you can think of with their complete line of barrels, receiver sets, rails, etc. for 5.56, 300BLK and .308. Recently they introduced two brand new products that will expand the possibilities even further.

First up was their new .223 Wylde chambered 16″ uppers. For those who don’t know, .223 Wylde is basically a hybrid between .223 and 5.56 NATO. Technically .223 chambered rifles are known for being a bit more accurate than a 5.56 NATO chambered rifle. With .223 Wylde barrels  you can shoot both .223 and 5.56 NATO rounds but they are designed to shoot the 5.56 NATO round more accurately than a 5.56 chambered barrel. They are offering these 16″ uppers based on their awesome forged M4E1 upper platform which features the integrated rail mounting surface and a “billet” look. You can choose between a 12″ or 15″ KeyMod rail or a 12″ M-LOK rail. These uppers are priced starting at $455 at AEROPrecisionUSA.com.

On the last day of SHOT Show 2015, AERO Precision unveiled their new 18″ KeyMod rail which is something a lot of people look for when building a longer barreled rifle such as a 20″ upper, etc. These are specifically designed to mount to the AERO Precision enhanced uppers so don’t expect to order one and mount it to just any old upper. However, if you are planning on building a long barreled upper this is a good reason to build it using some AERO components. These are not available yet but should be soon.

AERO Precision – New Website and a Month of Daily Deals

Posted on November 5th, 2014 by ar15news

AERO Precision just launched a brand new website. The new website is not only easier to navigate but it also does a better job of displaying all of the different types of products AERO Precision now offers such as complete AR-15 Uppers, complete .308 Rifles, etc. On top of the ease of use they have also really added an emphasis on improving the quality of their product photography. When you’re making an investment in AR parts its definitely nice to be able to see just how nice the parts are and get a good sense of the finish, etc. Sadly most firearm companies don’t care enough to take nice pictures of the products they expect you to pay a good amount of money for so this definitely says a lot about AERO Precision’s commitment to offering a quality product and quality experience.

AR Pistol Build Details and Pictures

Posted on August 4th, 2014 by ar15news

I recently built a new sexy looking AR Pistol that I’ve been taking pictures of and have gotten quite a few questions about what components I used, why I set it up the way I did and how its running so far. Its been a while since I did a “Build Details” article so I figured since so many people were interested in this build I would do one on it. This article will basically be a run down of the different components as well as an explanation of why I used them if needed.

We’ve all seen some AR Pistols that have extremely short barrels/uppers. I tend to not go shorter than a 10.5″ barrel on mine as it’s short enough to make them more compact without sacrificing a ton of accuracy or velocity. This whole build started out with a mid length AERO Precision COP Upper and Forged Lower. This is the second AR I’ve built with this receiver set and I love them.

THE AR PISTOL UPPER
The Upper, as I mentioned, features an AERO Precision COP mid length upper with a Parallax Tactical TiN BCG, Magpul MBUS Pro sights and Fortis Mfg Hammer charging handle. For the optic I wanted something very small and compact so I went with the Vortex Optics RAZOR and an American Defense Mfg QD mount. The barrel is an ODIN Works 10.5″ .223 Wylde Stainless Steel barrel with a Primary Weapons CQB comp on the end. The combination of a shorter barrel and the CQB comp makes it perfect for a home defense weapon but the ODIN Works barrel definitely holds up to its reputation as a straight shooter and is absolutely capable of hitting longer range targets with ease. I’ll shoot some 100 yard groups soon and do another writeup for you guys on the accuracy of this 10.5″ AR Pistol.

AR Pistol Upper

THE AR PISTOL LOWER
The lower for this build is an AERO Precision lower that I bought as a set with the upper for this build. Both were Cerakoted Tungsten for a unique look. So far I’ve added a Battle Arms Development BAD-CASS-SA short throw selector and EPS Pins, Phase 5 Weapon Systems Winter Trigger Guard, Magpul K2 grip and an Impact Weapons Components QD End Plate sling mount. There is a new ALG Defense ACT trigger waiting for it down stairs that I need to install.

Another feature that should be standard on ALL AR Pistols is the combination of a Sig Sauer SB15 Arm Brace and an SB15 specific buffer tube such as the KAK Industry Super Sig Tube or Phase 5 Hex-2.  These buffer tubes push the SB15 further away from the receiver making the setup a bit more comfortable to shoulder (Shouldering the Sig SB15 is legal according to the ATF). For this build I installed the KAK Super Sig Tube and its awesome. You can even get an adjustment kit of rings that you slide on before installing the SB15 to adjust how far back it sits.

You also might notice the MagPod on the magazine. These will be available for purchase very soon!

AR Pistol Lower

THE BUSINESS END
The part I get questions about the most is the business end of the upper. Most people seem to really like this setup so here is a pretty detailed look at it. One of the other reasons I like muzzle devices like the CQB comp is that you can put a light right up to the end of the muzzle and not worry so much about it getting damaged in the blast of the rifle or coated in carbon. My setup consists of a Magpul AFG and a Haley Strategic Partners Thorntail Offset Mount with an INFORCE WML mounted on it. The Thorntail Offset Mount is made by Impact Weapons Components for HSP and is an awesome mount for the WML. It has four slots to mount the WML on and can even be mounted cantilevered like mine is.

IWC HSP Thorntail Offset Light Mount 1

As you can see the WML is pushed out almost to the tip of the muzzle. Pushing it further forward not only reduces shadowing in the light beam but also gives you a lot more real-estate to put your hand on a shorter rail.

IWC HSP Thorntail Offset Light Mount 1

The next few pictures will show you a detailed look at the complete setup and hand position. While using the AFG I like to put my thumb on top of the rail for a solid grip. To activate the light, all you need to do is slide your thumb to the left and the activation button is right there. This is a very effective and comfortable setup.

IWC HSP Thorntail Offset Light Mount 1IWC HSP Thorntail Offset Light Mount 1IWC HSP Thorntail Offset Light Mount 1IWC HSP Thorntail Offset Light Mount 1

If you like this light setup and want to put it on your rifle or pistol build, I would recommend checking out www.ImpactWeaponsComponents.com. They have the HSP Thorntail Offset Mount, Magpul AFG grip and INFORCE WML light all in-stock. Plus, if you use the discount code “ar15news” at checkout you’ll save 5% off your entire order.

This is definitely my favorite AR Pistol build to date. After a few hundred rounds so far I can tell you it runs like a champ and is absolutely a blast to shoot. The bolt holds open on empty mag, no Failure to Eject, no Failure to Feed, etc. Just an all around accurate AR Pistol that I would not hesitate to grab when my life depended on it.
