KAK Industry 7.62×39 AR Pistol Build and Range Report

Posted on October 20th, 2014 by ar15news

I’ve been so busy lately that I’ve not had a ton of time to go to the range but last week I specifically made time to hit the range and function test my 7.62×39 AR Pistol I built. This thing had been sitting in my HSP INCOG Rifle Bag completely ready to go just begging for some action and it was my pleasure to oblige. Below you’ll see some pics of my 7.62×39 AR Pistol. I’ll first cover the components I used to build it and the range report will follow after that.

KAK Ind 762x39 AR Pistol Build 7

Basically all you need to retrofit or build any AR upper as a 7.62×39 is the Barrel, Bolt and Mags and KAK Industry has everything you need in one place. I already had an extra AR Pistol lower built so I just needed some of their awesome upper components. The lower is a Noveske N4 forged lower with an ALG Defense ACT trigger, Battle Arms Development Selector, Magpul MOE K2 grip, Law Tactical Gen3 Folding Stock Adapter, Phase 5 Weapon Systems Pistol Buffer Tube and a Sig Sauer SB-15 Arm Brace. I upgraded to a Wolf High Power Hammer Spring but probably could have done without it.

KAK Ind 762x39 AR Pistol Build 7

KAK Ind 762x39 AR Pistol Build 7

For the upper I sourced the heart of the build at KAK Industry. They make all of their own components and have a great reputation. I used the KAK Industry 11″ 7.62×39 barrel, KAK Industry 7.62×39 complete BCG, KAK Industry Gas Block and Gas Tube. The upper receiver is an AERO Precision forged upper with a Northtech Defense Ti-FANG Titanium forward assist, Fortis Mfg Hammer charging handle, Centurion Arms 11″ CMR rail and a BattleComp BABC. Topped it all off with a Vortex Optics Viper PST 1-4 scope and an American Defense Mfg QD mount.

Of course the weather is changing up here in Michigan. It was cold and rainy that morning at the range but I couldn’t care less. I brought along some really nice Hornady 123gr 7.62×39 SST ammo to run through the brand new AR Pistol. The best thing you can do when function testing a new AR is to take it slow. I only had one ASC 7.62×39 mag so I loaded one round in the mag, pulled back on the charging handle, flipped the selector to “America” and pulled the trigger. As expected it went BOOM so I checked the chamber to make sure the rifle ejected the spent casing, which it did. After that first round goes as planned you get a bit of a smile on your face and start to have fun.

KAK Ind 762x39 AR Pistol Build 7

I loaded up another 5 rounds and proceeded to fire them down range sighting in the Vortex Optics Viper PST 1-4 scope.  First 3 rounds went through perfect but on the fourth I had a Failure To Feed. Keep in mind I only had 5 rounds in the mag to start meaning this was the second to last round in the mag. I stripped the mag, removed the round and inspected it noticing that once the mag was removed the round didn’t really seem to be stuck or anything. I loaded another 10 rounds and again, second to last round FTF. This was a recurring theme and it became very clear that the issue was with the mag and definitely not at all a problem with the Upper, BCG or Barrel. Other than the second to last round of each mag issue I had absolutely ZERO malfunctions with this build. It really was a pleasure to shoot. I’ve heard the ASC mags get better as you wear them in but I will also be looking into some other brands and will do a followup article specifically regarding 7.62×39 AR Mags.

KAK Ind 762x39 AR Pistol Build 7

So after blowing through almost all of my ammo getting to know the 7.62×39 AR Pistol, I saved the last 5 rounds to get a little grouping on paper. Now keep in mind, when I test fire my AR’s I always go to the shorter range. Its basically a 30-35 yard range that typically has less people on it. When I shoot for groups I usually head on over to the 100 yard range but being that this is just an AR Pistol, I had no bipod, etc I decided to stay on the shorter range and just get a group there. The image below shows you a 5 round group, just resting the handguard on a block. I’m positive I could tighten this group up but I was out of ammo. One of these days I’ll get it out on the 100 yard range and get some longer range data. I was very happy with this group though based on the distance I would expect to shoot this rifle at in a real world situation.

KAK Ind 762x39 AR Pistol Build 7

Overall, I am very pleased with this build. Aside from the magazine issue, all of the parts functioned flawlessly. KAK Industry really is a one stop shop for tons of AR Parts including 5.56, 300BLK, 7.62×39, 458 SOCOM and .308 builds. This is not my first experience with KAK Industry and I’ve enjoyed every part I’ve purchased from them. For this specific build you can check out the KAK 7.62×39 AR Parts here. For all other builds just visit the KAKIndustry.com website and get to looking around at the awesome stuff they offer.

Sneak Peek!! First Look At The New Fortis Mfg Billet AR-15 Upper

Posted on September 17th, 2014 by ar15news

A couple of weeks ago Fortis Manufacturing revealed a heavily cropped picture that showed a small portion of a new billet upper that they are producing. There were zero details posted along with the pic and no additional pictures followed…until now. :) My good buddy Richard (UWone77 on Facebook) is some sort of Ninja or something and was able to sneak into the Fortis HQ and get some quick photos of the new billet upper. I’m personally excited about this upper because its pretty evident given the photos and Fortis’ track record that it will look pretty sweet but still be a very high quality piece. Now if we could just get Fortis to make some cool lowers we’d be all set. ETA is about 4 weeks before these are available for purchase. Check out the pics below and check out www.FortisMfg.com to see all the other fine accessories and parts they already offer.

NEW!! Fortis Mfg Releases New Aimpoint Mount and Light Mount

Posted on August 28th, 2014 by ar15news

Fortis Manufacturing quietly introduced two new products this week. One is a new version of their awesome F-1 Optics Mount (Aimpoint T-1/H-1 Mount) and the other is a new KeyMod Light Mount. I’ve included pics and details for both new products below.

The Fortis Manufacturing F-1 Optics Mount is one of the cooler looking mounts designed for the Aimpoint T-1/H-1 optic and is now being offered in an Absolute Co-Witness mount height. People have always been asking for an Absolute Co-Witness version of the F-1 Optics Mount which was a Lower 1/3 Co-Witness Mount. Lower 1/3 Co-Witness and Absolute Co-Witness refer to where your Iron Sights line up in relation to the Red Dot. A Lower 1/3 Co-Witness mount is a bit taller so your Iron Sights will be in the lower portion of your optic with the Red Dot just above. With an Absolute Co-Witness mount your Red Dot and Iron Sight will line up together. Having an Absolute Co-Witness mount has its advantages such as being able to sight in your rifle with just your Iron Sights and then line your Red Dot up with them for quick sight-in.

Fortis Mfg also just introduced a new KeyMod Light Mount. This light mount is designed to fit most flashlights with a 1″ body such as the Elzetta Design lights, most SureFire lights, etc. As I mentioned, this is a KeyMod mount and will work with any KeyMod rail. The design of this light mount pushes the position of the flashlight up and forward which makes it much easier to activate the light without having to move your support hand much and also gives you a bit more room on the rail for your hands or other accessories.

Fortis Mfg prides themselves on producing American Made, high quality, affordable AR-15 accessories and components and these products are exactly that. Both products are available for purchase now at the links I’ve supplied below.

The original RED Comp from Fortis Manufacturing just found out it now has a bigger brother. Fortis announced the release of their new RED 7.62 Brake the other day. I actually just got one of these yesterday and it looks pretty sweet, haven’t shot it yet but definitely looking forward to soon. If you have a .308, 300BLK, 6.8 SPC or any other rifle with 5/8×24 threads on the end of the barrel you might want to check out the new RED 7.62 Brake.  Details and pics below.

AR Pistol Build Details and Pictures

Posted on August 4th, 2014 by ar15news

I recently built a new sexy looking AR Pistol that I’ve been taking pictures of and have gotten quite a few questions about what components I used, why I set it up the way I did and how its running so far. Its been a while since I did a “Build Details” article so I figured since so many people were interested in this build I would do one on it. This article will basically be a run down of the different components as well as an explanation of why I used them if needed.

We’ve all seen some AR Pistols that have extremely short barrels/uppers. I tend to not go shorter than a 10.5″ barrel on mine as it’s short enough to make them more compact without sacrificing a ton of accuracy or velocity. This whole build started out with a mid length AERO Precision COP Upper and Forged Lower. This is the second AR I’ve built with this receiver set and I love them.

THE AR PISTOL UPPER
The Upper, as I mentioned, features an AERO Precision COP mid length upper with a Parallax Tactical TiN BCG, Magpul MBUS Pro sights and Fortis Mfg Hammer charging handle. For the optic I wanted something very small and compact so I went with the Vortex Optics RAZOR and an American Defense Mfg QD mount. The barrel is an ODIN Works 10.5″ .223 Wylde Stainless Steel barrel with a Primary Weapons CQB comp on the end. The combination of a shorter barrel and the CQB comp makes it perfect for a home defense weapon but the ODIN Works barrel definitely holds up to its reputation as a straight shooter and is absolutely capable of hitting longer range targets with ease. I’ll shoot some 100 yard groups soon and do another writeup for you guys on the accuracy of this 10.5″ AR Pistol.

AR Pistol Upper

THE AR PISTOL LOWER
The lower for this build is an AERO Precision lower that I bought as a set with the upper for this build. Both were Cerakoted Tungsten for a unique look. So far I’ve added a Battle Arms Development BAD-CASS-SA short throw selector and EPS Pins, Phase 5 Weapon Systems Winter Trigger Guard, Magpul K2 grip and an Impact Weapons Components QD End Plate sling mount. There is a new ALG Defense ACT trigger waiting for it down stairs that I need to install.

Another feature that should be standard on ALL AR Pistols is the combination of a Sig Sauer SB15 Arm Brace and an SB15 specific buffer tube such as the KAK Industry Super Sig Tube or Phase 5 Hex-2.  These buffer tubes push the SB15 further away from the receiver making the setup a bit more comfortable to shoulder (Shouldering the Sig SB15 is legal according to the ATF). For this build I installed the KAK Super Sig Tube and its awesome. You can even get an adjustment kit of rings that you slide on before installing the SB15 to adjust how far back it sits.

You also might notice the MagPod on the magazine. These will be available for purchase very soon!

AR Pistol Lower

THE BUSINESS END
The part I get questions about the most is the business end of the upper. Most people seem to really like this setup so here is a pretty detailed look at it. One of the other reasons I like muzzle devices like the CQB comp is that you can put a light right up to the end of the muzzle and not worry so much about it getting damaged in the blast of the rifle or coated in carbon. My setup consists of a Magpul AFG and a Haley Strategic Partners Thorntail Offset Mount with an INFORCE WML mounted on it. The Thorntail Offset Mount is made by Impact Weapons Components for HSP and is an awesome mount for the WML. It has four slots to mount the WML on and can even be mounted cantilevered like mine is.

IWC HSP Thorntail Offset Light Mount 1

As you can see the WML is pushed out almost to the tip of the muzzle. Pushing it further forward not only reduces shadowing in the light beam but also gives you a lot more real-estate to put your hand on a shorter rail.

IWC HSP Thorntail Offset Light Mount 1

The next few pictures will show you a detailed look at the complete setup and hand position. While using the AFG I like to put my thumb on top of the rail for a solid grip. To activate the light, all you need to do is slide your thumb to the left and the activation button is right there. This is a very effective and comfortable setup.

If you like this light setup and want to put it on your rifle or pistol build, I would recommend checking out www.ImpactWeaponsComponents.com. They have the HSP Thorntail Offset Mount, Magpul AFG grip and INFORCE WML light all in-stock. Plus, if you use the discount code “ar15news” at checkout you’ll save 5% off your entire order.

This is definitely my favorite AR Pistol build to date. After a few hundred rounds so far I can tell you it runs like a champ and is absolutely a blast to shoot. The bolt holds open on empty mag, no Failure to Eject, no Failure to Feed, etc. Just an all around accurate AR Pistol that I would not hesitate to grab when my life depended on it.

Posted on July 21st, 2014 by ar15news

Fortis Manufacturing, best known for their REV rail, has been very busy lately making awesome AR-15 accessories such as Aimpoint Mounts, Vertical Grips and Muzzle Devices. They have now introduced the .308 (7.62) version of their popular RED (Rapid Engagement Device) muzzle brake. It does look quite a bit different than the original 5.56 RED but has the same type of performance that you expect from Fortis Mfg. Take a look at the pics below. The .308 RED is now available for purchase through REVOLVR.com for just $59.95 and will be soon be available through FortisMfg.com.

NEW!! Fortis Mfg KeyMod Rail Sections

Posted on July 12th, 2014 by ar15news

Fortis Manufacturing is always coming up with some very cool designs for their new products and their new KeyMod Rail Sections are no different. The whole idea for KeyMod was to be a direct attachment system for accessories but there are so many 1913 compatible accessories and not enough KeyMod direct attach accessories so manufacturers have to make 1913 rail sections that mount to a KeyMod rail. Pretty funny, right!? Well the cool part is it does make the placement of the rail sections modular and you don’t have to use a complete Quad rail which saves weight. Fortis just introduced their new KeyMod 1913 Rail Sections but did something pretty cool to set theirs apart from other similar options on the market. They hid the attachment screws inside of the rail, eliminating any signs of the screw head. This is not major big news or anything but it does look pretty sweet. If you’re looking for a rail section for your KeyMod handguard, give the Fortis Mfg KeyMod Rail Section a look.

Fortis Mfg RED Comp 5.56 Blem Units On Sale – $39.95

Posted on May 14th, 2014 by ar15news

Its not too often that you find a sale on “Blem” muzzle device, let alone on an awesome one. So when I saw that Fortis Mfg had some blem units of their RED (Rapid Engagement Device) Comp on sale for just $39.95 I was intrigued. Basically instead of three vertical ports it has three and they have a few machining marks. The Blem RED Comp will function exactly the same as a non-blem model but you only pay $39.95 instead of the usual $69.95. The Fortis Mfg RED Comp is pretty awesome and at just $39.95 you really can’t go wrong. Pick one or ten up at www.FortisMfg.com.

Yesterday, I got a surprise package in the mail. In it was another Fortis Manufacturing Hammer charging handle. This isn’t too out of the ordinary as I get stuff here and there to use in my pictures, on my rifles, etc. It wasn’t until I pulled the charging handle 0ut of the package that I realized that this was a Black Hammer charging handle. Of course the first thing I did was post a picture of it on Instagram. After I had used “Brag-a-Gram” I inquired to see Who, What, Where and When. (No need to ask “Why” of course) Right about then my buddy Jody sent me a link. These were the new Black Teflon coated Hammer charging handles that we’ve heard little birdies talking about for a while now. The best part is you don’t even have to wait for these to come out. The new Fortis Manufacturing Black Teflon Hammer charging handles are in-stock, same price as the standard Hammer and ready to ship.

As you can see in the picture below, the Black Teflon coating is not as dark as a normal anodized charging handle. It has more of a nice graphite black color. The coating is super smooth and feels great. I just got my first Hammer charging a few weeks ago and really like it.

The new Fortis Mfg Black Teflon Hammer charging handle is available for purchase at both Rainier Arms and Fortis Manufacturing. Both will offer top notch customer service. Some people prefer to purchase directly from the manufacturer of a product. However, Rainier Arms does have them for $3 less. It’s up to you. You can’t go wrong either way. I’ve copied the links for you below.
