The Fortis Muzzle Brake – for your 9MM

Posted on August 8th, 2016 by ar15news

While it seems like EVERYONE is building a 9mm AR right now, its taken AR component manufactures a little bit longer to jump on board as well. Thankfully Fortis Manufacturing has jumped in with a 9mm version of their extremely popular muzzle brake. What makes this such an awesome new product is not just that it looks pretty amazing but it also interfaces with the Fortis QD CONTROL blast shield (sold separately). This is sure to be a great performing muzzle device for your 9mm AR and is available in both 1/2×28 and 1/2×36 TPI which are the two most common thread patterns for 9mm AR barrels. Check out the information below, then head on over to www.FortisMfg.com and pick one up for yourself.

Fortis Mfg 9mm Muzzle Brake and CONTROL

The performance of the Fortis 556 Muzzle Brake is unmatched and the rise is non-existent, now replicated for your 9MM AR needs (also compatible with the Control Shield).

While the trend of 9MM AR’s continue to rise, we wanted to give those enthusiasts a product that carried the Fortis theme of design and functionality. So we took the 556 Muzzle Brake and utilized its aesthetics while getting the same performance for the 9MM that we do in our 556.

Available only in Nitride, in 1/2×28 and 1/2×36 TPI, now available for purchase on FortisMFG.com.

My Fortis Manufacturing Night Rail Found A Home

Posted on June 4th, 2016 by ar15news

I’ve been trying to figure out what to use my Fortis Mfg 14″ Night Rail on and finally tonight decided on modifying a rifle I had already built.

I removed the stock, grip, rail and muzzle device so that all I was left with was a San Tan Tactical billet ambi receiver set, buffer tube, ALG Defense ACT trigger and a Joint Force Enterprises 16″ Match barrel. I then added the Bravo Company USA Gunfighter stock, Magpul grip and MBUS PRO, Fortis Mfg Night Rail and Gas Block, VG6 Precision Epsilon muzzle device, Hexmag magazine and an Aimpoint PRO in an American Defense Mfg mount.

I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out. Super stoked to give the Fortis Night Rail a run this weekend if I get some time to shoot. Looks pretty sick to me. You can purchase the new Fortis Mfg Night Rail in 12″ or 14″ in your choice of KeyMod or M-LOK right now at www.FortisMfg.com.

Fortis Mfg NIGHT RAIL Exclusive Intro Price

Posted on April 3rd, 2016 by ar15news

Fortis Manufacturing introduced a neat new rail at SHOT Show back in January called the Night Rail. The Night Rail utilizes a new patent pending two piece barrel nut that creates a full 360 degrees of contact with the inside of the rail instead of a clamping the rail onto the barrel nut or using screws. This also makes installation very simple as the barrel nut does not need to be timed. Just tighten to the upper, slide the rail on and expand the barrel nut. Rainier Arms has secured the first run of rails and is offering them at an exclusive introductory price. This first run is for the 12″ version. They do plan on offering 7″, 9″, 12″, 14″ and 15″ versions. Check out the pics below. There is an informative installation video at the link below if you are wanting to see how this installs as well.

When designing the Night Rail™, we wanted to design a handguard that was easy to install, but also to be able to mount with a full 360 degrees of contact. Our new patent pending two piece barrel nut is one of a kind. We developed this from the ground up and the machining time it takes to make the barrel nut, rivals the time making the actual rail. That’s not to say the rail is simple to make. One look and you’ll see that we really took time with this in design and development. What we ended up with is a rail that not only looks amazing, but is still true to our lightweight brand. The barrel nut/mounting system keeps the rail performing even during the harshest conditions.

Being one of the leaders in the industry of rail innovation and design, it’s always a challenge to innovate new products that function well, but look great also. We’re up for the challenge with the next chapter of our product line – the Night™ Series. I think you’ll agree that we hit a homerun with the Night Rail™.

Rainier Arms Exclusive – M-LOK SWITCH 5.56 Rail

Posted on February 18th, 2016 by ar15news

Out of all of the AR upgrades out there, one of the must haves for me is an upgraded rail/handguard. Pretty sure most AR owners feel the same. A few years ago Fortis Manufacturing introduced their new SWITCH rail which features a Quick Detach system that lets you install/remove the rail quickly for maintenance, adjusting a gas block or multiple rail configurations, etc. The Fortis Mfg SWITCH rail only comes with the KeyMod mounting system at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock spots. With Magpul promoting and supporting M-LOK it was only a matter of time before the new M-LOK SWITCH rail would be produced.

Fortis Mfg has partnered up with Rainier Arms to offer the Rainier Arms exclusive M-LOK SWITCH 5.56 rail. The M-LOK SWITCH is now available in 9 1/4″, 12″, 13″ and 15.5″ lengths, all with the Rainier Arms logo on them. While M-LOK and KeyMod seem to have about the same support from accessory manufacturers, many users prefer the clean look of the M-LOK system. If you’re on the M-LOK train, you might want to check out this awesome new Rainier Arms M-LOK SWITCH 5.56 rail.

SHOT Show 2016 – Fortis Mfg Introduces the Night Rail

Posted on January 20th, 2016 by ar15news

A leader in the modern sporting rifle accessory world and always ahead of the game with revolutionary designs such as their SWITCH rail attachment system; Fortis manufacturing has done it again with their new Night Rail.  Utilizing a brand new 2 barrel nut design which uses a flange on inner barrel nut, the outer barrel nut is tightened against the rail – locking it in place.  The rail features MLOK slots, QD attachment point at the front and rear and a full length picatinny rail on top – the front of the rail itself is wide enough to accommodate their recently released CONTROL Concussion reduction device.

Now Availablel!! Fortis Mfg “CONTROL” Blast Diffuser and Brake

Posted on December 16th, 2015 by ar15news

A while back we wrote a post to tell you guys about the new Fortis Mfg Muzzle Brake and CONTROL blast diffuser were coming soon. Just this week they finally released the first retail units for both products and they look pretty freaking sweet.

Fortis Mfg Control Blast Diffuser 4

The new Fortis Mfg Muzzle Brake plays many roles for your AR. Not only does it look like a work of art but it also uses the two rearward angled side ports to reduce felt recoil, the two top facing ports help control muzzle rise and it also acts as the mounting interface between your rifle and the new Fortis Mfg CONTROL blast diffuser.

Fortis Mfg Muzzle Brake 1Fortis Mfg Muzzle Brake 1

The Fortis Mfg CONTROL blast diffuser is a quick detach muzzle shroud designed to force the blast and noise from the muzzle brake forward away from the shooter and those next to them. The Quick Detach system is very simple and easy to use. The lines of ports at 2 o’clock and 10 o’clock help to reduce muzzle rise even while the CONTROL is attached.

Fortis Mfg Control Blast Diffuser 1Fortis Mfg Control Blast Diffuser 2Fortis Mfg Control Blast Diffuser 2

Here are a couple of things I really like about what Fortis Mfg has done with the new CONTROL blast diffuser and Muzzle Brakes. 1. The Muzzle Brake and CONTROL are sold separately making it possible for you to buy any number of the new muzzle brakes and just one CONTROL to swap around all of them as needed which saves you money. 2. The Fortis CONTROL QD mounting system is being shared freely with other muzzle device manufactures in the industry so that they can create a multitude of muzzle devices that can interface with the new CONTROL blast diffuser. Rainier Arms was the first to adopt the new mounting tech for their new muzzle brake and others will be soon as well.

If you’ve been waiting, wait no more. The new Fortis Mfg muzzle brake and CONTROL blast diffuser are now available at an introductory price at www.RainierArms.com.

I am seriously looking forward to running the new Fortis Manufacturing Control Blast Mitigation Device or BMD on some of my rifles. The Control BMD is a shroud that fits over the muzzle brake to direct the blast forward which helps if you have to shoot indoors or next to people at the range. It has a really nice QD attachment system. Easy on, easy off. When you don’t need it, remove it.

Fortis Control BMD 1Fortis Control BMD 2Fortis Control BMD 3

At the same time, Fortis will also be introducing their new muzzle brake which looks awesome. It has a dual chamber design to help reduce recoil with an additional two ports on the top to reduce muzzle rise.

You’re probably thinking “Of course they’re releasing a muzzle device, because you have to mount the Control BMD to their muzzle brake” but that would be incorrect. Fortis has begun sharing the mounting technology with other muzzle brake manufactures in the AR industry. First to use the Fortis mount technology was Rainier Arms with their new XTC2.0 muzzle brake. This could open up the door to an unlimited number of Muzzle Device / Fortis Control BMD combinations.

According to Fortis the Control BMD will be available in about 30 days. Sounds like an early Christmas present to me! Check out the text and video below for more information.

You breach, shoot a few rounds and then can’t hear feedback from your team because you’re temporarily deaf from the concussion and blast noise from your muzzle device. The Fortis Control Blast Mitigation Device (BMD) was designed to push the noise forward for combative situations or even for simple range use, while the top ports keep the muzzle device flat on target. The patent pending quick detach system will be made available for other manufacturer’s to use in conjunction with their muzzle devices. So whether you’re knocking down doors or shooting at the range, let’s help save your hearing. So click on the Control BMD and go!

Build Details: Quarter Circle 10 Glock Compatible 9mm AR

Posted on September 10th, 2015 by ar15news

For a few years now, I have wanted to build a 9mm AR that takes Glock magazines. Mainly because the handgun I carry every day is a Glock 19. About a month ago I finally built my 9mm AR and it has been awesome. From the first round down the pipe it has run like a sewing machine with zero failures and the bolt hold open on last round is even working. Since then I have had a ton of questions asking me what specific parts I used in my build so I wanted to put all of the details together in on place for people to see and get information from. Once I have had a chance to put a ton more round through it I will follow up with a review as well.

QC10 9mm Build 0

My build started with Quarter Circle 10. They seem to be leading the pack in innovation regarding pistol caliber AR’s. They offer a Glock Small Frame lower for 9mm, 40SW, 357Sig, a Glock Large Frame lower for 45ACP and 10mm and a Colt 9mm lower as well as bolts and barrels for these as well. I wanted my AR to take the same mags as my Glock 19 so I went with the stripped Glock Small Frame 9mm Lower, 9mm BCG and 9mm 7.5″ barrel. Any AR-15 upper will do but I use a Rainier Arms mil spec forged upper minus forward assist. QC10 will be coming out with their own side charging upper with pistol caliber ejection port soon too. I also used an ALG Defense ACT trigger and need to upgrade to an ambi safety soon.

QC10 9mm Build 0

I covered the barrel with an SLR Rifleworks 8″ Solo Ultra Lite M-LOK rail. SLR rails are becoming one of my personal favorites. With such a short rail I decided to put an Arisaka Defense M-LOK Finger Stop underneath it. Its just small enough to not be in the way but big enough to keep your hand from getting too far forward. You may have noticed already but the QC10 barrels are straight blow back and do not require a Gas Tube or Gas Block.

QC10 9mm Build 2

QC10 9mm Build 2

For the muzzle device I chose the new 9mm Linear Comp from Kaw Valley Precision. I have used KVP’s Linear Comps for 300BLk and 5.56 before and the work great. Now they offer the same product in a 9mm version with a 1/2×28 thread pitch which is what I needed for the QC10 barrel. The fact that my barrel was shorter than my rail made the KVP linear comp a no brainer but it also looks sweet only sticking half way out the rail.

QC10 9mm Build 2

For my optic I chose a Vortex Optics RAZOR 3MOA red dot and mounted it to a Cross Machine Tool red dot sight mount. This is a nice light weight, compact optic setup that I feel has very fast target acquisition.

QC10 9mm Build 5

One item I recently installed was the Law Tactical Gen3 Folding Stock Adapter. At the moment I have this gun set up as an AR Pistol but will be converting it to a registered SBR with a stock soon. I love how compact the folding stock adapter makes this for transport. I can fit it in a small backpack, bag, case, etc without having to separate the upper and lower. It is quickly ready to shoot by flipping the buffer tube straight as you remove it from its concealment.

QC10 9mm Build 6

QC10 9mm Build 7

I was able to remove the extra weight at the rear of the carrier by removing the large roll pin and sliding it out. That is where the carrier extension for the Law Tactical Folding Stock Adapter goes.

QC10 9mm Build 7

The Law Tactical Gen3 Folding Stock Adapter has a lowered hinge to keep it away from your knuckles but just to be sure I am using a Fortis Manufacturing Hammer charging handle which has a really nice sized lever on it. The Hammer is one of my go to charging handles. Great build quality and affordable.

QC10 9mm Build 7

Originally I started out with a standard carbine buffer spring and carbine buffer combo. It worked just fine but the guys at QC10 told me they recommend a heavier buffer, somewhere in the 5-6 ounce range to slow the carrier down a bit. I installed a Damage Industries 5.4 ounce H3 buffer and it continues to run perfect.

QC10 9mm Build 7

Aside from a custom mag release and bolt catch assembly, the QC10 lower takes normal mil spec parts kits. You can see the Bolt Catch itself is mil spec but it is actuated by a pre-installed lever that contacts the magazine follower. This tends to be an issue with some mags as the spring pressure isn’t always strong enough to press the lever up and activate the bolt catch. This can be remedied by installing Wolf High Power springs inside the magazine. I bought a couple of SGM Tactical 33rd magazines from AIM Surplus and they seem to have better springs than the OEM ones. So far they are activating the LRBHO (last round bolt hold open) every time.

QC10 9mm Build 7

So, there you have it. That’s pretty much my build in a nut shell. As I always tell people who are intimidated with building their own AR, “Its easier than you think”. You’ll love the increased range and accuracy you get out of a 9mm AR and being able to carry one type of mags to feed both your Primary and Secondary is awesome. Let me know if you guys have any questions or comments.

Sneak Peek! Fortis Manufacturing Quick Detach Blast Diverter

Posted on August 4th, 2015 by ar15news

My buddy “Chummerz” who works for Rainier Arms gets his hands on a ton of the newest stuff on the market. Recently he shared a few pictures of a new Quick Detach Blast Diverter that will be coming soon from Fortis Manufacturing. Blast Diverters or Blast Shields have really been taking off in popularity over the last few years as more and more people realize the potential benefits they offer, especially when it is a QD version that can be installed over a muzzle brake for indoor use and quickly removed for outdoor use letting you utilize the full benefits of the muzzle brake.

There isn’t a ton of information available yet for the new Quick Detach Blast Diverter from Fortis Manufacturing (shown below) but it appears to be mounted to the also coming soon Rainier Arms XTC 2.o muzzle device. While this would make for a great combo, I’m hoping it means it will be compatible with many different muzzle devices which I feel would make it even more of a huge success than it is already guaranteed to be.

Fortis manufacturing QD Blast Shield 2

Fortis manufacturing QD Blast Shield 2

As with most sneak peeks, this QD Blast Diverter appears to be shown in the white, meaning it has not had its protective coating applied. Most likely you will see a Melonite, Anodized or Phosphate coating on the finished product. Chummerz said he will be hitting the range with the new Fortis Manufacturing QD Blast Diverter this week and will get some video, etc. Be sure to keep tabs on his Facebook and Instagram accounts at the links below.

Recently I started a new build. It was centered around a few key components, the Rainier Arms Mod3 billet receiver set, Rainier Arms 16″ .223 Wylde barrel made from a Rock Creek Blank, the LANTAC USA E-BCG and the new Fortis Manufacturing 14″ REV II MLOK rail. I just recently finished this build and will begin the process of shooting and reviewing it. Until then I wanted to give you an initial impression of the new REV II MLOK rail.

I have used many Fortis Manufacturing REV rails over the past few years and really like them a lot. Lately Fortis has come out with a few new rails including the new REV II rails which look great. As you would assume they are a modified version of the original REV rail that deletes the bottom picatinny rail section and forward side rail sections for a super sleek design, lighter weight and more flexibility in mounting your KeyMod or MLOK accessories.

Fortis REV II MLOK 1

INSTALLATION

The REV II rails mount directly to a Mil Spec AR-15 barrel nut with a rock solid clamp just like the original REV rail. This type of mount is great for a few reasons. One, it creates an insanely solid union between the upper and rail. It also makes it easier for users to upgrade from the standard plastic “Glacier Guard” or other hand guards that use a Delta Ring as they will not need any armorers tools to remove the old barrel nut and install a proprietary barrel nut. Just cut the Delta Ring off, remove the spring, install your low profile gas block and your REV II rail will be on in minutes. Installation of accessories can be done while the rail is installed but can be done much easier by quickly removing the rail instead of installing them while on the rifle.

Fortis REV II MLOK 1

Fortis REV II MLOK 1

Fortis REV II MLOK 1

FIT AND FINISH

Fit and finish on the Fortis Manufacturing rails is second to none with a very nice dark black Type III Hard Coat Anodizing, smooth edges and aggressive lines. Not to mention they just look stinking sexy! As you can see in the picture below I also used the Fortis Manufacturing Low Profile Gas Block which looks great with its similar lines.

Fortis REV II MLOK 1

Fortis REV II MLOK 1

FINAL THOUGHTS

Overall I am very impressed with the Fortis Manufacturing REV II rail and would put them very high on the “Recommended List”. They offer these in both KeyMod and MLOK versions all the way from 7″ long to 14″ long.  So far there really isn’t anything I would say I don’t like about the rail. One note I would make is that anti-rotation tabs are a great feature but as you may already know, not all  billet uppers will accommodate them unless they manufacture of that upper has designed it to work with a rial with anti-rotation tabs. This is not an issue with the rail but more of an issue with manufacturers of billet uppers. The Fortis Billet Upper and Rainier Arms Billet Upper work great with them and many others will too. Check out the entire build below. Once I’ve had some time behind the trigger on this build I will update with more reviews on the different components.

Fortis Mfg Introduces the New REV II Rail with M-LOK

Posted on April 29th, 2015 by ar15news

**Update** – Fortis just released the first run of REV II M-LOK rails on www.REVOLVR.com. 4-29-15 3pm EST.

Back in January we broke the news that Fortis Mfg was introducing a new version of the original REV rail called the REV II. Now we are here to spill the beans on the newest version of the REV II which now features M-LOK. As you may already know, M-LOK is a mounting system that is being heavily promoted and backed by Magpul. This means that all of their cool new grips, light mounts, rail panels, etc. will have an M-LOK option and explains why everybody wants an M-LOK rail.

Fortis REV II MLOK 1

Fortis REV II MLOK 2

Then new REV II M-LOK rail continues with the same design characteristics of the REV II KeyMod rail in that it mounts directly to a mil spec barrel nut, features a full run of M-LOK at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock, offers 2 QD sling attachment points at 3 and 6 o’clock at the very front of the rail as well as two more in the same spot at the rear of the rail. As you’ve probably already seen, Fortis is well known for their aggressive styling and the new REV II M-LOK rail definitely fits in that statement.

Fortis REV II MLOK 4

Fortis REV II MLOK 5

The combination of the super lightweight yet rugged design of the REV II and the M-LOK mounting system means this will be another home run rail system for Fortis Mfg. The REV II M-LOK rail has not been released for purchase yet but you can sign up to be notified the moment it is. Just head on over and enter your email address at www.FortisMfg.com.

NEW!! Fortis REV II KeyMod 12″ Handguard

Posted on January 7th, 2015 by ar15news

For a few months we’ve heard quiet rumblings about a new version of the very popular Fortis REV rail. Just yesterday those rumors were proven true when Fortis Mfg released the new REV II KeyMod 12″ handguard which removes the lower 1913 Picatinny rail section as well as the small forward side rail sections that are found on the original REV rail. Not only does this make the REV II even lighter than the original REV but also makes it more of a tubular style handguard with KeyMod at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock with a solid 1913 Picatinny section at 12 o’clock. I really think Fortis hit the nail on the head with this design and can’t wait to get my hands on one.

We’ve shared a few sneak peeks of the new Fortis Manufacturing billet upper receiver and today we get to announce that they are officially available for purchase. As with most Fortis Manufacturing products they are offering an introductory price on this first run. The intro price is available through Revolvr which is an awesome firearms friendly market place. I’ve been buying stuff on there for months and love not having to use PayPal like on other sites.

The new 7075-T6 Fortis billet upper comes complete with the Dust Cover and Forward Assist already installed and features some really cool machining cuts around the Forward Assist and Shell Deflector areas as well as on the entire opposite side. One thing to note is that the Fortis billet upper will work with basically any rail including ones with Anti-Rotation Tabs which is typically a problem with billet uppers. Fortis did a great job removing all sharp edges on this thing and the finish is great. The biggest plus is the value. Right now you can purchase the new Fortis Billet Upper for just $179 with FREE SHIPPING at www.Revolvr.com. Now that’s a deal!

KAK Industry 7.62×39 AR Pistol Build and Range Report

Posted on October 20th, 2014 by ar15news

I’ve been so busy lately that I’ve not had a ton of time to go to the range but last week I specifically made time to hit the range and function test my 7.62×39 AR Pistol I built. This thing had been sitting in my HSP INCOG Rifle Bag completely ready to go just begging for some action and it was my pleasure to oblige. Below you’ll see some pics of my 7.62×39 AR Pistol. I’ll first cover the components I used to build it and the range report will follow after that.

KAK Ind 762x39 AR Pistol Build 7

Basically all you need to retrofit or build any AR upper as a 7.62×39 is the Barrel, Bolt and Mags and KAK Industry has everything you need in one place. I already had an extra AR Pistol lower built so I just needed some of their awesome upper components. The lower is a Noveske N4 forged lower with an ALG Defense ACT trigger, Battle Arms Development Selector, Magpul MOE K2 grip, Law Tactical Gen3 Folding Stock Adapter, Phase 5 Weapon Systems Pistol Buffer Tube and a Sig Sauer SB-15 Arm Brace. I upgraded to a Wolf High Power Hammer Spring but probably could have done without it.

For the upper I sourced the heart of the build at KAK Industry. They make all of their own components and have a great reputation. I used the KAK Industry 11″ 7.62×39 barrel, KAK Industry 7.62×39 complete BCG, KAK Industry Gas Block and Gas Tube. The upper receiver is an AERO Precision forged upper with a Northtech Defense Ti-FANG Titanium forward assist, Fortis Mfg Hammer charging handle, Centurion Arms 11″ CMR rail and a BattleComp BABC. Topped it all off with a Vortex Optics Viper PST 1-4 scope and an American Defense Mfg QD mount.

Of course the weather is changing up here in Michigan. It was cold and rainy that morning at the range but I couldn’t care less. I brought along some really nice Hornady 123gr 7.62×39 SST ammo to run through the brand new AR Pistol. The best thing you can do when function testing a new AR is to take it slow. I only had one ASC 7.62×39 mag so I loaded one round in the mag, pulled back on the charging handle, flipped the selector to “America” and pulled the trigger. As expected it went BOOM so I checked the chamber to make sure the rifle ejected the spent casing, which it did. After that first round goes as planned you get a bit of a smile on your face and start to have fun.

I loaded up another 5 rounds and proceeded to fire them down range sighting in the Vortex Optics Viper PST 1-4 scope.  First 3 rounds went through perfect but on the fourth I had a Failure To Feed. Keep in mind I only had 5 rounds in the mag to start meaning this was the second to last round in the mag. I stripped the mag, removed the round and inspected it noticing that once the mag was removed the round didn’t really seem to be stuck or anything. I loaded another 10 rounds and again, second to last round FTF. This was a recurring theme and it became very clear that the issue was with the mag and definitely not at all a problem with the Upper, BCG or Barrel. Other than the second to last round of each mag issue I had absolutely ZERO malfunctions with this build. It really was a pleasure to shoot. I’ve heard the ASC mags get better as you wear them in but I will also be looking into some other brands and will do a followup article specifically regarding 7.62×39 AR Mags.

So after blowing through almost all of my ammo getting to know the 7.62×39 AR Pistol, I saved the last 5 rounds to get a little grouping on paper. Now keep in mind, when I test fire my AR’s I always go to the shorter range. Its basically a 30-35 yard range that typically has less people on it. When I shoot for groups I usually head on over to the 100 yard range but being that this is just an AR Pistol, I had no bipod, etc I decided to stay on the shorter range and just get a group there. The image below shows you a 5 round group, just resting the handguard on a block. I’m positive I could tighten this group up but I was out of ammo. One of these days I’ll get it out on the 100 yard range and get some longer range data. I was very happy with this group though based on the distance I would expect to shoot this rifle at in a real world situation.

Overall, I am very pleased with this build. Aside from the magazine issue, all of the parts functioned flawlessly. KAK Industry really is a one stop shop for tons of AR Parts including 5.56, 300BLK, 7.62×39, 458 SOCOM and .308 builds. This is not my first experience with KAK Industry and I’ve enjoyed every part I’ve purchased from them. For this specific build you can check out the KAK 7.62×39 AR Parts here. For all other builds just visit the KAKIndustry.com website and get to looking around at the awesome stuff they offer.
