If you still think Geissele only makes amazing triggers, you need to start thinking differently about Geissele. They have and still do make some of the best rails on the market but over that past few years they have added things like Armorers Tools, Optic Mounts, Charging Handles and now … the Maritime Bolt Catch. Think of the Maritime Bolt Catch as a bolt catch with a larger surface area and more aggressive texture. What this does that other aftermarket bolt catch’s don’t is it extends the controls closer to the index finger of a left handed shooter so they can manipulate the bolt catch with their index finger without taking their hand off the grip.

Geissele Automatics Maritime Bolt Catch 1

“The Geissele Maritime Bolt Catch is designed with the warfighter in mind and will work with any lower receiver designed to accept a mil-spec M16/M4 Carbine bolt catch. The increased surface area promotes ease of function when locking back the bolt or releasing the bolt after a magazine change. In addition, the extended controls add an increased functionality for left handed shooters who no longer have to break their grip to manipulate the bolt catch. Left handed shooters can easily reach the controls using the index finger of their left hand making magazine changes and locking the bolt back much more fast and efficient. Aggressive checkering covers the surface of the levers giving the Geissele Maritime Bolt Catch a textured surface that enables positive feedback to the shooters hand when being used with gloves or at night. Manufactured from properly heat treated 8620 steel and manganese phosphate coated, the Geissele Maritime Bolt Catch is intended to serve as an enhanced mil-spec replacement and assist in giving our warfighters overmatch capability with the M16/M4 carbine platform.”

Whether you’re a lefty or righty, there are benefits to be had here and coming from Geissele you know it will be top notch quality. Thankfully the price is extremely competitive with other aftermarket bolt catch’s with an MSRP of just $29. I’ve ordered a couple to try out and you can too at www.Geissele.com.

The other day I took some time to start sighting in my new 20″ .308 upper I just built for my FALKOR Defense rifle. Shot this awesome 100yd 3-shot sub-1/2-MOA ( .4935″ ) group with a 20″ Criterion Barrels match barrel. I realize it is just a 3-shot group but I’m very impressed so far. I was shooing some PNW Arms 175gr “Sniper” Match 7.62×51 ammunition. I had a few other really nice groups but this was my last and tightest group of the day. I only have room for a 100yd range on my property but my buddy has a 500yd gong that I think I need to ring with this baby.

Earlier today, Geissele Automatics quietly introduced a new product. The Super 42 Spring and Buffer utilizes 3 separate wires to form the spring which is stronger, more durable and quieter than a traditional AR buffer spring. The buffer comes as an H1 buffer but can be easily upgraded to an H2 or H3 buffer by purchasing the additional Tungsten weights and adding them to the buffer. Technical information and pictures listed below.

Geissele Super 42 Buffer and Spring

The Geissele Super 42 Spring was designed to improve the function and reliability of your AR-15 pattern rifle. Its unique spring design uses three independent strands of wire, just like the German MG42 Machine Gun. This concept acts as a harmonic damper and energy absorber by allowing the springs to flex separately from each other. This flex helps displace excess energy which decreases the chance of spring failure and assists with making your AR-15 more reliable.

Compared to the stock spring, The Geissele Super 42 Spring has a decreased tendency to lose length and force over a given round count. As an added bonus, it removes the annoying spring reverberations (twang) heard and felt by the shooter through the buttstock. The Super 42 Spring has a 15% stronger average return force than the standard buffer spring. This will assist in stripping rounds out of the magazine when operating with a dirty weapon or when using steel-case ammo.

You can purchase the new Geissele Super 42 Spring and Buffer at www.Geissele.com.

I ran across this graphic on the Geissele Automatics Facebook page today and wanted to share it with you guys. I’ll be the first to admit I have been a little out of the loop on the Geissele Super Precision Scope Mounts but this graphic surprised me as I had no idea they were offering 3 different variations of the AR15 / M4 Scope Mounts. These mounts are basically the same mounts that Geissele builds for the Unites States SOCOM (Special Operations Command) and have been getting rave reviews by those that have had their hands on them so far.

Geissele Automatics Super Precision Scope Mounts

The AR-15/M4 Super Precision series of scope mounts are optimized for use with an AR-15/M4 upper. The mounting surface spans 7 picatinny sections and utilizes 4 shear lugs. These mounts use Geissele’s update of the classic nut and bolt method for clamping the mount to the picatinny rail, which is the most secure method of attaching your scope to your weapon. Each nut and bolt combination provides 1,400 pounds of clamping force, much more than any lever mounting arrangement.

The Geissele Automatics Super Precision scope mounts are available in a Standard, Extended and Hyper Extended configuration with the additional options of 30mm or 34mm ring size, a 20moa built in Cant and your choice of 7075-T6 Aluminum or 2099 Aluminum Lithium Alloy.  You can take a look at and order your own here: https://geissele.com/ar15-m4-super-precision-scope-mount.html

In case you missed it, just before Christmas Geissele Automatics gave AR owners all over the country a Christmas present of sorts by releasing a sneak peek at a couple of new products that will be coming soon. As you may already know, Geissele has been working on a new Scope Mount for a DOD (Department of Defense) customer since early 2015 and will be available for consumer purchase in 2016.

Geissele Automatics Scope Mount 1Photo by Johnny Danger

As if Geissele Scope Mounts weren’t good enough, just prior to Christmas they released an image that had every AR owners mouth watering. In the image (see below) there was a sneak peek at the new Geissele Ambi Charging Handle and Geissele T1/T2 micro red dot mount. The Ambi Charging Handle looks like it has a nice curve to the handles which should help you really get a good grip on it for ease of use and the T1/T2 mount looks low profile but stout.

Geissele Automatics T1-T2 red dot mount and Ambi Charging Handle

Another new product coming soon is a new scope mount for the 50 BMG rifle. As you can imagine, due to recoil you can’t just use any old scope mount on a 50 BMG. The new Geissele 50 BMG Scope Mount will feature a 3 bolt design for the mount to rifle interface as well as a 3 bolt design for the scope ring caps to clamp on and hold the optic nice and tight over a larger surface area. If you own a 50 BMG rifle, this might be something to look into!

Black Gun AR-15 Black Friday Sales

Geissele Super Modular Rails have always been hard to find in-stock as they’ve had a hard time keeping up with the demand. Recently Geissele decided to fix that issue by narrowing their rail offerings down to just their most popular models allowing them to increase production of those specific models which are the SMR MK4 and SMR MK8 M-LOK rails. Here are some words from Bill Geissele himself.

A letter from Bill Geissele to the best customers a company could ask for.

Dear Loyal Customers,

In 2009 Geissele started making our Super Modular Rail (SMR) for the AR-15/M4 Carbine platform. Since then the SMR variants have been highly sought after and keeping up with the demand became almost impossible due to the complex 3D machining and large material removal from the aluminum semi-billet we start with. A year and a half ago we decided to meet this issue head on; we invested in equipment, people, and engineered new processes and procedures to manufacture our SMR’s on a larger scale without compromising quality. This allowed us to make more rails than ever before and more efficiently than ever before. The improved processes have allowed us to not only mass produce the highest quality, premium rail on the market. But, it also allowed us to dramatically reduce the cost, a cost savings that we have decided to pass along to you, our loyal customers. Today is the culmination of all of that hard work. Starting now, the SMR’s for the AR-15/M4 Carbine platform will be available in 7”, 9.5”, 13” and 15”. Each SMR will also feature M-LOK compatibility, and most importantly will start at just $200. On top of that, each SMR will include a low-profile Stainless Steel Super Gas Block (SGB), a $59 value and a value that can’t be beat.

I would like to personally thank each and every one of you for your business and support. We promise to continue to provide the highest quality premium products available.

For God & Country,
Bill Geissele

New Geissele rails

Probably the first thing you’ll notice and many AR builders will be excited about is the fact that you can now get Geissele SMR in shorter length rails. Many SBR / AR Pistol owners have wanted to put an SMR on their ARs but have been unable to until now. Geissele SMR MK4 and MK8 rails are now available starting at 7″ and 9.5″ and then increase to 13″ and 15″ giving you an option for just about any build or need.

Geissele SMR MK8 Shorter LengthGeissele SMR MK4 Shorter Length

Another new surprise is that all rails (with exception of the MK7) will come with a FREE Super Gas Block. For non-adjustable gas blocks this is probably my favorite. They give you the option to use just set screws as well as a channel to pin the gas block to the barrel. I have used quite a few of these Super Gas Blocks without a single issue.

Over the past few months we’ve had the opportunity to work with the guys from SI-Defense in helping spread the word about their new products including their new .308 billet receiver set that features “mirrored ambi controls”. Remember that term as you’ll see what we mean soon. Now that the .308 Ambi receiver sets are hot off the machines, SI-Defense asked if we would want to build our own rifle using these receivers…and of course we’re not gonna turn that down. 🙂 So this is the start to our multipart article showing the rifle we built, what parts we used and then we’ll do additional articles once we’ve actually had some time to shoot it for a while.

The first thing that arrived were the SI-Defense .308 Ambi billet receivers. The mirrored ambi controls on the receivers are pretty mind blowing. When you push on the Bolt Catch, Bolt Release or Mag Release on one side the same button on the other side moves as well. It really is pretty amazing that the ambi controls are mirrored and not just an added lever that is completely different than the control on the right side. The dust cover is pretty cool too in that it is easy to remove/install even with the handguard installed because it snaps into place.

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1

A few months ago Rainier Arms introduced their new .308 UltraMatch BCG. Once I knew this build was going down I promptly went on the Rainier Arms website and purchased one. The finish on this thing is a really nice deep Black Nitride that is super smooth. The angled cuts toward the front and fluting at the rear of the carrier look pretty sweet.

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1

If you’re gonna build a gun you definitely need a barrel, right?! Right. I’ve posted about AERO Precision barrels many many times before whenever they have a new model to introduce or a special deal etc. but have never personally used one myself. So for this build I contacted my buddy Chad over at AERO Precision to see if I could get my hands on one of their 16″ Mid Length .308 barrels. They are made of 416 Stainless Steel and I’m really excited to see how well they perform. You might be thinking “A 16 inch .308 build? Most guys do 18 inches or more.” and you’re right but I just built an 18″ like everyone else and wanted do something a bit different. Because I know big bore rifles can be a bit ornery I installed a SLR Rifleworks Sentry Adjustable Low Profile Gas Block along with the Rainier Arms Nitride Mid Length gas tube.

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1

Along with the SLR Rifleworks Sentry Adjustable Gas Block, I also used the SLR Rifleworks SOLO 15″ KeyMod handguard, Hand Stop and their Synergy BCF muzzle device. It truly makes for one killer looking setup and can’t wait to see how well it performs.

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 10

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1

Along with making some pretty amazing ambi receivers, SI-Defense also makes a mean looking ambi charging handle called the MACH10 which stands for Modular Ambi Charging Handle for AR10. This specific one has a neat feature where it latches on the inside of the receiver but they will also offer an outside latching MACH10 and a MACH15 charging handle as well.

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1

As with all of my builds this one includes a Battle Arms Development Ambi Safety. I don’t own a single AR that does not have one and no I don’t get them for free. Its one of those products that I have honestly grown to love and buy them for every build.

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1

Along with upgrading the Safety I also upgraded the Trigger. I usually use either a Geissele or CMC Trigger and decided to try the Geissele S3G trigger in this build. The S3G is not really designed for a rifle with higher recoil as it has a very light trigger pull and could bump-fire easily so I used the heavier spring that comes with it. This is kind of a trial run and will be interesting to see how it performs in a .308.

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1 SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1

Oooohhhh. Look at that sexy beast!! I also added a Trijicon VCOG, Magpul MBUS PRO sights, UBR stock and a MOE+ grip to finish off the build. I think it turned out to be an one of the best looking rifles I’ve built.

SI-Defense 308 Ambi Rifle 1

These pics are hot off the press as I just finished this build over the weekend. This week will be its maiden voyage to see how well she runs and get the gas system all dialed in. Will update you with an additional article detailing its performance at the range and hopefully some 100 yard groups. If we don’t get accuracy data on the .308 AERO Precision barrel for that article it will be in an additional one for sure. Below is a list of links for the parts we used in this build.

One of my favorite rails I have is the Geissele SMR MK4 which features some KeyMod slots at the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock sections as well as short rail sections up front. They now are offering the SMR MK4 with M-LOK slots. The coolest part is that they also put M-LOK slots along the upper left and upper right 45 degree angles allowing for additional mounting positions that are tucked in closer to the top rail.

As with all of the Geissele Super Modular Rails, the MK4 M-LOK will mount to Geissele’s proprietary barrel nut that makes for an extremely rigid transition from Upper to Rail and also makes it very easy to swap out different rails on one single upper. So far there is no exact time for when these will be available but I would assume they’ll be available soon.

Geissele SMR MK4 MLOK Rail 3

Geissele SMR MK4 MLOK Rail 3

Geissele SMR MK4 MLOK Rail 3

The Super Modular Rail MK4 M-LOK is Geissele’s ultra-lightweight M-LOK option. These rails feature integrated M1913 Picatinny rail sections at the muzzle end of the rail in the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions. Additional slotting aids in heat dissipation while dramatically reducing the rails overall weight and not sacrificing the original strong and rigid platform. The MK4 M-LOK rail features M-LOK slots at the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions as well as the upper 45° quadrants. This reduces weight of the rail system, while keeping the modularity and versatility to attach the myriad of Magpul M-LOK of accessories as necessary.

A while back I wrote a few articles about the new CIV Tactical SPR (Special Purpose Rifle) barrels that they were producing one at a time by hand and the extreme accuracy reputation they have. That got me thinking I needed to get my hands on one myself and do a new SPR build. My plan was to buy one of Dustin’s barrels and assemble the rifle myself but after talking to him a bit he said, “Hey, send me all of the parts you have and I’ll hand assemble it the CIV Tactical way.” I wasn’t exactly sure what that meant but it sounded cool to me.

I already had a Tactical Firearm Solutions receiver set and Parallax Tactical rail ready to go that TFS and cerakoted a nice Sniper Gray for me. I boxed up the Upper Receiver, Rail and Gas Tube to which Dustin would add the new SPR Barrel (which comes with a matched Bolt), Gas Block and CIV Tac Flat Line Muzzle Brake. I had never had Dustin build me a complete upper and still didn’t know what the “CIV Tactical Way” meant but I was soon to find out. Along the way Dustin sent me some pictures of the progress and detailing some of the things he does to make sure you get the accuracy that his barrels and uppers are known for.

One of the first photos he sent me was showing the Bling Bling of the barrel crown that he does by hand on his lathe.

1 CIV Tactical SPR Barrel Crown

Another set of pictures he showed me was the process of Lapping the face of the receiver threads and the rear facing side of the barrel extension. This process is typically done in precision bolt action rifles and ensures that the barrel is in perfect alignment with the upper receiver which obviously is done for increased accuracy.

1 Civ Tactical SPR Upper Lapped

1 CIV Tactical SPR Barrel Extension True

After a couple of weeks I received the assembled upper back and and couldn’t wait to get it all kitted out and take it to the range. Below is a great shot of the barrel itself before mounting the rail on the upper. As I mentioned before these barrels are completely hand made 416R Stainless Steel, 1/8 Twist and are chambered in .223 Wylde. The .223 Wylde chamber will shoot any .223 or 5.56 round but is designed to increase the accuracy of 5.56 NATO ammo.

CIV Tactical SPR 0

The assembled upper has a Tactical Firearms Solutions Upper, Armageddon Tactical charging handle, Griffin Armament 45 degree offset Fail Safe Sights, Ares Armor NiB Bolt Carrier with CIV Tactical Match Bolt, Vortex Optics Viper PST 4-16 FFP scope, Parallax Tactical FFSSR 15″ rail, CIV Tactical 18″ SPR Match Barrel, Gas Block and Flat Line muzzle brake.

CIV Tactical SPR 1CIV Tactical SPR 6

The lower I assembled myself and used the matching Tactical Firearms Solutions lower, Battle Arms Development Selector and EPS pin set. The EPS pins were a big help as the Cerakote made it nearly impossible to install a standard set of Takedown Pins. Even now they are very tight (which is how I like them) but the detent for a bullet tip on the other side makes it a breeze to push them through. I also used a LUTH-AR MBA1 stock that I got from MidwestPX. This stock is about half the price of comparable models such as the Magpul PRS but it still performed great, however its not quite as refined quality as you would expect. For an SPR rifle I don’t thin you would want to use anything other than a nice 2-stage trigger which is why I went with the Geissele SSA-E. I have this same trigger in other rifles and its seriously one of my favorite triggers I’ve ever used. Smooth, light take-up, you feel the wall (beginning of the second stage) and know if you pull any further that rifle is gonna go bang. The SSA-E will easily make any lower feel like a highly tuned machine.

CIV Tactical SPR 2CIV Tactical SPR 3

I mounted the Vortex Optics Viper PST 4-16 First Focal Plane scope in an American Defense Manufacturing QD mount and purchased a B&T Industries Atlas bipod. This setup really completed the rifle and man did it look sick!

CIV Tactical SPR 9

The whole rifle just really came together perfectly but what you and I really want to know is….”How does it perform at the range?” I loaded up my rifle, some Greenline Tactical 75gr .223 ammo and headed to the 100 yard range. One thing I didn’t want to do is put the rifle in some lead sled and get accuracy data that way. I wanted to shoot it exactly how I would if I were actually using it which for me is Bipod in front, Bag in back. After getting the scope dialed onto the target it was time to do my best not to mess this up. 🙂

Civ Tactical SPR at the range

I decided to shoot 5 round groups instead of 3 just to show consistency. The following images are just a few of what I would consider excellent groups that I got out of this rifle at 100 yards. There were so many of these to choose from so I just picked three that were somewhat different. The first image shows a 5 round .5 MOA group (looks like 4 shots but the 5th went through one of the other holes). The second image shows 5 round .625 MOA group. The third image shows a 4 shot .5 MOA group with a low 5th round that knew I pulled as soon as I shot it.

1-CIV Tactical SPR Range 1

2-CIV Tactical SPR Range 2

3-CIV Tactical SPR Range 3

The upper shot absolutely perfect with zero FTE’s and zero FTF’s, bolt held open on an empty mag, it was just perfect. I own and have shot lots of other supposed “Match” barrels and many of them are so inconsistent that they made me think I was doing something wrong. The CIV Tactical Match SPR Barrel proved to be an extremely consistent rifle even in the hands of a novice precision shooter such as myself. Suffice it to say, the CIV Tactical SPR barrel is the real deal. I know there are some true shooters out there that could get even more accuracy out of this barrel. As I’ve mentioned before, I typically build all of my own AR’s but I would not hesitate even for one moment to have Dustin at CIV Tactical build me another upper. When you couple the hand made CIV Tactical barrel with the gunsmithing that Dustin does prior to assembly, it shows that precision shooting isn’t just reserved for bolt action guns. You can purchase this exact CIV Tactical SPR barrel in either 18 or 20 inch lengths with a matched Bolt right now at www.CIVTactical.com.
