Had a nice time sighting in / function testing a couple of my newer AR’s at the range the other day. I typically shoot on private land but bench shooting is a good way to get your guns out, put some rounds through them and make sure they are running good. For the most part there were no issues but any AR builder will tell you it only takes one small issue to throw a monkey wrench in there.

The rifle has an upper built by CIV Tactical using receivers are from Tactical Firearms Solutions. CIV Tactical used their excellent 18″ SPR barrel and Matched Bolt that are known for getting some extremely low sub-MOA results. I used an older Bolt Carrier with the supplied bolt and figured everything would be fine. When the rifle wouldn’t eject a single round I knew there was something going on. Instead of just giving up and using the other AR I brought I decided to try to figure out was the issue was. After trying 2 different lowers, 4 different mags and 2 different types of ammo I decided to try a different BCG. Swapped it out and it ran like a Sewing Machine. I know the Matched Bolt is good as it was test fired with that exact Bolt so it’s pretty obvious I can narrow it down to the Bolt Carrier such as a leaky Gas Key. Looks like I threw in my own monkey wrench.  LoL

The point is if you think logically through your failures and start eliminating possible issues, you can quite often move past the issues with the rifle and still get in some good trigger time. Oh, and bring some tools and small parts with you when test firing a rifle for the first time.  :)

The rail on the SPR is a Parallax Tactical FFSSR rail. It also has an ATLAS Bipod with ADM mouth and the Stock is the LUTH-AR MBA-1 that you can buy from www.MidwestPX.com. The AR Pistol is all AERO Precision with an Odin Works 10.5″ Barrel, Primary Weapons CQB comp and a KAK Industry Super Sig Tube. Both guns have Vortex Optics…optics.

NEW!! Vortex Optics SPARC II Red Dot

Posted on May 29th, 2014 by ar15news

Vortex Optics just released the updated model of their very popular SPARC red dot and I like what I’m seeing. The SPARC has been my personal favorite “budget” red dot for a while now and has a great reputation for quality and durability at a fraction of the cost of some other quality red dots on the market. Not to mention, Vortex has one of the best “No questions asked” Lifetime, Unlimited, Unconditional  out there. The new model is called the SPARC II and comes with some very nice upgrades and fixes a small feature that some people complained about on the original model. The SPARC II will still come with its multi-height mount which worked perfect on my old SPARC. That makes it easy to mount on pretty much any rifle you want.

Vortex Optics SPARC II 1

A couple of changes from the old model to the new: –  The old Bikini style lens covers notoriously broke so Vortex added standard flip-up lens covers which I think is an awesome upgrade. –  I like that they’ve removed the side mounted On/Off button. Some people complained that they would turn the original SPARC off but it would somehow turn back on while in their bag or case, etc. The new SPARC II incorporates the On/Off into the brightness buttons which is again a great upgrade. –  They also added some stainless accents to give it an upscale look. –  I have not confirmed this but it does not appear that the Screw-On 2X Magnifier is included anymore. I think this is a good compromise to get the other upgrades. Plus Vortex has a really nice flip to the side magnifier now anyways.

Get on target fast with the SPARC II. Ultra-compact and lightweight, the SPARC II (Speed Point Aiming for Rapid Combat) is equally at home mounted on an AR-15 or shotgun. Digital rear facing controls for powering on/off and adjusting the 2 MOA daylight bright red dot brightness at ten intensity levels—automatically returning to the last dot intensity used when powered up. Rugged single-piece body machined from aircraft grade aluminum is o-ring sealed for waterproof and fogproof performance.

The versatile multi-height mount system accomodates most firearms including AR-15s needing absolute or lower 1/3 co-witness heights, and mounts on standard Weaver or Picatinny bases (not included). A modular three-piece base offers four separate mounting heights for user- and weapon-specific customization: 18.0 mm (.709 inches), 21 mm (.823 inches), 37 mm (1.457 inches), 40 mm (1.575 inches).

Specs:

  • Magnification 1 x
  • Objective Lens Diameter 22 mm
  • Eye Relief Unlimited
  • Adjustment Graduation 1 MOA
  • Travel per Rotation 45 MOA
  • Max Elevation Adjustment 90 MOA
  • Max Windage Adjustment 90 MOA
  • Parallax Setting Parallax Free
  • Length 3.1 inches
  • Weight 5.9 ounces

The new Vortex Optics SPARC II red dot retails for $289 but you can buy them now from RainierArms.com for just $199. These really are one of the best bang for your buck red dots on the market. If you’re a Super SEAL Recon Sniper Operator and are worried it won’t take the beating you’re gonna put it through, the awesome Lifetime Unconditional Warranty should put your qualms at ease. SALE!! Vortex SPARC Red Dot for $149.99

Posted on July 20th, 2012 by ar15news

In the world of Red Dot Sights there are tons of options to choose from but it seems like you have to choose between either a super high end and expensive model or a really cheap budget model.  There really aren’t that many options that are in more in the mid range.  For the last year I’ve been using a Vortex SPARC  Red Dot to see just how well it really holds up and I’ve got to say I’m very impressed.  It comes with a 2x magnifier, multiple mounts and accessories.  Obviously you could go out and spend an extra $400 and get an Aimpoint but that’s just not very feasible for everyone.  Palmetto State Armory has a coupon valid for this weekend only that will make the Vortex SPARC just $149.99.
