Shared Features of the Overwatch Tactical Bolt Action Rifles

Let’s go over the commonalities then the differences; here are the Overwatch 16″ Rifle and 12″ Pistol share these commonalities.

Faxon TAC30 Action by Stiller

Stiller Actions has been making premium quality rifle action based on the Remington 700 for years. With customers hunting in the woods, competing at the range, and chasing down enemies of America, Stiller Actions is well known to those who demand quality.

Tac30 Action

  • Designed for Tactical and Long Range Hunting applications
  • Bead Blasted 416 Stainless
  • 90-degree bolt throw
  • Modified M16 extractor, Remington 700 pin-style ejector
  • It fits any Remington 700 short-action inlet stock
  • Accepts AICS pattern mags

The first thing you’ll notice with the Tac 30 action is how amazingly smooth the bolt rides when you run it back and forth. But, of course, you can thank Stiller’s proprietary, double-layer coating for that.

Timney 510 Elite Hunter 510-V2

The Timney Elite Hunter 510-V2 is one of the best triggers on this earth. Zero creep, sharp break; it’s perfection in tangible form.

The Differences Between The Overwatch Tactical Rifles

There are two primary differences between the Overwatch Tactical 12″ and 16″. First, besides the barrel length, the rifle has a buttstock, while the pistol has a stabilizing brace.

First, let’s talk barrel length. Next, here’s a look at the preliminary load data for 8.6 Blackout, as provided by Faxon and Q.

The difference between 12″ and 16″ with Barnes supersonic 160gr is only 150 fps. With Sierra’s 300gr subsonic round, the difference is about 40 fps. With 8.6 Blackout optimized for performance in short barrels, there’s little difference.

Instead, the barrel length (and corresponding brace/stock) is more about personal preference and legality. For example, in some states hunting with pistols is outlawed, regardless of caliber.

There’s also the matter of comfort and terrain. If you’re on the shorter end, you’ll probably opt for the 12″ barrel. This is also true if you spend more time hunting in densely wooded areas.

But if you’re more of an ent who likes hunting in wide open spaces, that modest performance gain in the 16″ barrel combined with the more adjustable B5 stock makes a better platform for most.

Regardless of which barrel length you prefer, it’s clear that Faxon Firearms is swinging for the 8.6 Blackout fences with the Overwatch Tactical and Overwatch Hunter.

When to Run A Bipod on Your Rifle

If you want to shoot consistently over longer distances you need a good scope and equally, a good bipod or in certain circumstances a good tripod. Knowing if and when to run a bipod on your rifle can drastically change your shooting performance.

Using a bipod for firearm support dates back to the twelfth century when soldiers supported cast iron hand cannons affixed to short poles. During early frontier days, hunters often used forked tree branches stuck in the ground and even arrows latched together to form a stable platform for their rifles.

AR15 with Bipod and Scope

The need for instant mobility and improved accuracy evolved throughout the years, creating a need for a bipod that could be attached easily, moved out of the way when not in use, and quickly activated.

Aside from the most obvious benefit of improving accuracy, here are a few benefits you may not have considered.

Choosing the Right Bipod for The Occasion

While you may decide to attach a bipod to your rifle because of the benefits mentioned, remember that the overall height of a bipod will not only offer the previously mentioned benefits but satisfy a unique shooting style.

For instance, a bipod standing between seven and ten inches tall is ideal when using a prone position, and it’s also one of a bipod’s most common heights, offering you the most stable platform.

However, attempting steep uphill or downhill shots forces you to retain a prone position, and you may not have the space. If you’re using a rifle in tall vegetation, a seven to ten-inch bipod may not be your best choice.

When in tall vegetation or under varying conditions, a ten to fourteen-inch bipod may be what you need. If the need for a lower prone position becomes necessary, you can always flip your bipod up and use a backpack as a shooting station.

Remember that the higher you go with a bipod, the less stable a platform you may create. For all rifle enthusiasts who prefer the sitting position when firing, a bipod between twelve and twenty-seven inches is ideal.

Although a bipod of this height may eliminate firing in a prone position, it does offer several advantages over the shorter bipods on the market. Just remember, you may experience a less stable platform with your bipod as you go up in height.

Bolt Action Rifles and Bipods

When firing a bolt action, whether firing a heavy caliber rifle for longer-range shots, or a bolt action rifle firing a lower caliber for varmint control, each recurring pull of the trigger requires considerable movement. Bolt Actions are a perfect use case for when to run a bipod on your rifle.

As any bolt action competitor or hunter understands, movement of the bolt up then back not only ejects the spent cartridge but, in many bolt action rifles, loads the next shot.

Bolt action rifles with bipods

With all the motion required with a bolt action, from ejection and loading to target acquisition and re-acquisition, using an adequately mounted bipod is the perfect companion for bolt action rifles.

A bolt action rifle with a bipod mounted and firmly attached to a shooting bench or on the ground allows you to smoothly manipulate the bolt for the next round without the need to move your support hand or the rifle barrel and sight away from the target.

While accurate shot placement also depends on proper ballistics, correct windage and elevation settings, and target movement, a bolt-action rifle mounted on a bipod creates a stationary platform that’s almost guaranteed to increase your accuracy with every shot you take.

Run a Bipod on Long Guns

When using a rifle with longer barrels that weighs up to almost ten pounds firing hard kicking calibers such as the .300 Weatherby or 8mm Remington Magnum, using a bipod eliminates the control effort required to make that accurate shot.

Whether at the range or in the field, a bipod offers the same firm shooting platform for a higher caliber heavy, regardless of whether it’s a bolt action or semi-automatic.

As many higher-caliber or heavier rifle enthusiasts will tell you, firing a rifle without a bipod or support system can often result in a brutal session as you attempt to tame the weight and recoil of that big gun. If don’t run a bipod on your long rifle, then you’re not taking full advantage of the platform.

Bipods Benefit New Shooters

While most rifle owners may understand the benefits and even use a bipod as a regular part of their shooting or hunting experience, a fixed bipod at a shooting station becomes a perfect teaching tool.

One of the things many novice firearm enthusiasts must learn is downrange safety. After an exciting discovery that they have successfully placed all their rounds on the target somewhere in the vicinity of the 5X range, a beginner may forget a few essential things about gun safety.

In their excitement of the moment, they may forget that the barrel of the rifle needs to remain pointed downrange, not being waved around at all their companions while proudly showing off their target.

A fixed bipod at the shooting station firmly attached to the rifle will help keep it pointing where it needs to be.

What About Tripods?

Holding your rifle firmly and keeping it where it needs to be as you sight the target and squeeze the trigger takes a lot of practice. Now toss in the curveball of a target suddenly appearing uphill or downhill from your position, requiring rapid readjustment and firing.

Hunter in Camo using tripod

A tripod with an effective ball swivel allows you to quickly position the rifle for a steep uphill or downhill shot, ensuring little action from you aside from moving your body while you swing the gun toward the target.

Another benefit of bringing a tripod along on your hunt is that the elevated position gives you a wider field of view allowing you to spot more game.

Practice Running Your Bipod

There are situations where improvised shooting platforms outweigh the use of a bipod. However, the general rule of thumb is it’s better to have it when not needed than not when the situation to use one presents itself.

Remember that adding a bipod to your rifle is the same as attaching any accessory. You’ll need to practice using it and continue to practice until you know how your bipod will function in various conditions.

If you’re going run a bipod on your rifle, whether you’re firing a long-barrel heavy or prefer a prone or sitting position, one thing to keep in mind is that practice makes perfect.

Or, at the very least, it improves your accuracy when firing with a correctly mounted bipod. The final take away is that during those many practice sessions learning all the functions and benefits of bipod use will produce more accurate shots during your next competition or hunting trip.

Mystery Ranch – Gunfighter 24

By Houtekamer

In our continued goal of telling you about all of Mystery Ranch’s new bags for 2022, we bring you the Mystery Ranch Gunfighter 24. We previously talked about its smaller sibling the Gunfighter 14 and now the larger bag which holds a whole ten extra liters and a different zipper configuration that feels like a wider opening version of the 3-Day Assault Pack.

Let’s dig into the features of this new bag in Mystery Ranch’s Assault Pack line.

The Gunfighter 24 is the TALL version of the Gunfighter 14

Mystery Ranch Gunfighter 24

Features and Layout

Starting on the top of the bag we see a very similar zipper configuration to the Gunfighter 14 which uses the Rip Zip top where after undoing a single buckle the lid of the pack can be quickly torn open. Things differ though in the addition of two more zippers at the bottom making this pack what they call a 4-Zip. These additional zippers really make the bag open up especially at the bottom making the contents of the pack easy to find.

Outside of this expansion, the outside of the bag looks like the stretch limousine version of the Gunfighter 14. The bag has the familiar Velcro patch area on the top where you could pick up some sweet morale patches from 2 Cent Tactical and help some veterans charities (shameless self-promotion but for a good cause).

The top of the lid has a grab handle for hefting your pack or you if things go pear-shaped. You also get the pass-through slot so you can run antennas or hydration bladder lines through.

The end of every zipper has a loop of webbing that acts as a zipper garage and a tie-down point for any gear you don’t want to drop.

The laser-cut PALS webbing is a great weight-saving option that doesn’t reduce the overall strength.

The bottom of the bag has a pouch with two zippers for storing some smaller quick-access items. Inside the larger zippered area you get some mesh pockets with elastic to keep your gear from falling out but larger items can just be tossed into the pouch.

The sides of the bag have two water bottle pockets that can hold anything from tins of chew, smoke grenades, or life-sustaining hydration. Above these on each side of the bag is a section of laser-cut PALS webbing to attach your MOLLE pouches to like a spare tourniquet holder or multitool pouch.

The lower zipper pulls have toggles to lock into the wings making the top the only open option if needed.

The back of the bag is plastered in 3D Spacer Mesh to aid in cooling since you will likely be pretty active while using this bag. The straps are the contoured ones you should expect from Mystery Ranch at this point.

What you don’t get is the Futura harness you’ll find on larger packs, which means you’ll sacrifice some adjustability for height. This pack does come with a hip strap but is likely mostly for stabilizing the bag so it doesn’t move around when running. You also get a sternum strap (which in our opinion almost every pack needs).

On the MultiCam version, all of the webbing is MultiCam branded webbing and on the Coyote version, you can expect coyote-colored webbing like you would expect.

All the spacer mesh for your cooling needs.

Inside of the bag, you get a hydration pouch toggle at the top which is needed in a bag this size. On each wing of the bag, you will find a zippered mesh pocket that you can easily identify the contents of. Each pocket has a space behind it you can stuff long items to keep them out of the way.

A rolled-up tarp fits well in a place like this. Each wing also has a D-Ring at the top for extra tie-down potential but is also used for the toggles on the lower two zipper pulls. These allow you to lock the lower zippers up so they can’t be brought down by running the toggle through the zipper.

And, in case you need it, you have some more PALS webbing inside of the bag for more of your pouches or even clipping on a pen or knife.

The inside of the bag may be spartan but it has spaces for the necessities and of course a hydration toggle.

All in this seems like a perfect larger version of a short mission-specific bag. Something that would be perfect for patrols where you will be returning to a vehicle or FOB. You get a bit more space than with the Gunfighter 14 but you aren’t carrying a full-sized ruck or 3-Day Pack that you will probably overfill (ask us how we know).

You can pick these up from Rampart in Canada through their Shield program and they currently have the Gunfighter 14 in both colors and the 24 in Coyote. In the states, you can head to the Mystery Ranch website  or visit one of their dealers to pick up one of their new Assault Packs or even the ever-popular classics.

Who Is West Coast Armor?

The diverse team at West Coast Armor has deep roots in the world of executive protection, military, law enforcement, and the private sector. In addition, the team at West Coast Armor has used and created body armor throughout their individual careers. They know firsthand the benefits and drawbacks of the different types of body armor.

With this knowledge and real-world experience, they achieved what they set out to do. West Coast Armor put five years of research and development, so they could create their industry-leading body armor. They were rewarded with Armor that is lighter, stronger, and more affordable than any others on the market.

5 Benefits of Using Dyneema in Body Armor Plates

  1. Constructed from ceramics, compressed laminate sheets, metallic plates, or composites
  2. Designed to deform and capture the bullet upon impact
  3. Absorbs and distributes the kinetic energy of the impact
  4. Protects against NIJ Level III, III+ and works as an excellent backing for ceramics in III++ or IV rifle threats
  5. 75% lighter than steel and 25% lighter than Aramid

Where are West Coast Armor Plates Made?

All raw materials are 100% domestically sourced and made in the USA.

Is West Coast Armor NIJ Certified?

Yes. West Coast Armor is NIJ certified, and all their body armor plates meet or exceed NIJ criteria.

The NIJ conducts independent research on the Ballistic Resistance of Body Armor with the help of the Office of Law Enforcement Standards (OLES). The most important attribute of the NIJ is its ability to remain objective to the industry and only adopt criteria based on scientific research and testing.

This research and testing are designed to save lives and improve the level of justice our law enforcement agencies can provide. This is why every company that wishes to sell body armor in the United States must meet the requirements set forth by the NIJ.

If you’re looking for a company that is selling armor, ensure they can provide an NIJ letter of compliance by doing a simple check on DOJ’s website to see if the company is certified.

West Coast Armor Testimonies

West Coast armor being pulled out of a vest

“As a former Police Chief, I believe that one of the most important responsibilities we have is to give the men and women that serve our profession the best equipment to do their job and keep them safe. I’ve seen firsthand the superior quality of the West Coast Armor Body armor in action. I’ve been blessed to witness agencies across the country test West Coast Armor vests and plates, and the outcomes were superior. I recommend to all my colleagues that they reach out to West Coast Armor.” – Donald (Chief of Police Ret.)

“The West Coast Armor level 4 plates are the most well-balanced and comfortable plates I’ve used. After seven combat deployments between Special Operations and Contract work, I can only wish I’d had these issued to me. I have full trust and confidence in their ballistic properties as I’ve seen their performance through more rigorous testing than NIJ requires. These plates have my full endorsement.” – Kyle C.

“As a retired police officer of 23 years working long shifts and jobs from the jail to vice then on to detective. I was always issued uncomfortable, heavy stiff armor. After wearing all types of armor throughout my military and law enforcement carrier, I can say I’ve never seen anything like it. Without question, West Coast Armor makes me want to wear armor again; it’s the lightest, thinnest and strongest armor I’ve ever seen.” – Bob V. Esponisa

Core Vision Training: Defense Training Courses

An area of increasing concern for all of us is the occupied home invasion, which can be defined as an incident where the family occupies the house, and they are confronted with an imminent lethal threat by one or more intruders.

Recently, the number of reported violent encounters inside the home has increased. These violent encounters aren’t even limited to your home anymore. You could be thrust into a violent encounter when shopping at a mall or even walking to your car afterward.

This growing concern has prompted a surge of new gun owners who intend to keep that newly purchased firearm for the primary purpose of home defense. Additionally, many states have adopted constitutional carry where gun owners now don’t need to attend any training to carry concealed.

There is a void in the training industry regarding preparing for violent encounters, at least in the context of home defense. Core Vision Training has stepped into that void in a big way.

Core Vision Vehicle escape course

Vehicle Escape Training Course

Why Spend The Money and Time on Training

Self-defense, home defense, and other preparedness training are necessary to effectively defend yourself, your family, and your home when targeted by crime or violence. There will always be criminals who want to take what isn’t theirs and predators who want to hurt the innocent. When you train to become more proficient in these skills, you gain the tools to stand your ground and live to see another day.

As with any training courses you attend, you want to ensure it fits your context of use and goals. However, many “tactical” training courses claim to train students in the art of fighting with a pistol and rifle, room clearing within your home, and a host of other “tacticool” courses.

Many courses people attend for the experience rather than for learning life-saving skills. Nevertheless, teaching these concepts takes days to execute correctly with the proper instructor cadre.

Core Vision Training employs instructors with proven operational experience, some of which are still operational, which gives you the most up-to-date relevant training available.

Core Vision: Structure Assessment Active Defense Course

If you are unlucky enough to find yourself in a fight with an armed assailant, learning to load and clear a malfunction is far easier if you are familiar with that weapon or type of weapon ahead of time. This is something you won’t want to figure out on the fly.

Imagine fighting your attacker in a dark parking lot or inside your home, and gaining control of his loaded weapon, only to die because you didn’t know how to operate the safety.

When you become skilled with your primary defensive tool, learn to use other weapons. Clint Smith said it best “There’s nothing that says you are going to fight with just your gun.”

The Core Vision Training Structure Assessment courses prepare you for just that. The Active Defense course, which is a combination of the home defense course and trauma training, is tailored to the everyday citizen looking to sharpen their skills and better protect their family.

WHAT’S COVERED

  • 1 & 2 person structure assessment
  • CCW Pistol mechanics & manipulations
  • Link up procedures
  • Casualty assessment and treatment
  • Call up procedures for 911
  • Center fed, corner fed rooms & hallways

Such as how he maintains driving the car and moves within and around the confines of his vehicle. Everything is done professionally and with a purpose.

The Core Vision Training Vehicle Escape Concepts course teaches you to be ready for a fight in and around your vehicle. Everything they teach you is done professionally and with a practical purpose.

WHAT’S COVERED

  • Avoidance
  • Preparation
  • Movement within and out of a vehicle
  • What is and is not cover on a vehicle

Land Navigation

When many of us first enlisted, there was no handheld GPS to tell us where we were and how to reach our destination. Instead, we had to learn how to use a compass and protractor with our maps. Land Navigation courses were taught with the old school military issue Lensatic compasses and a map whether it was daytime or night-time.

The use of a compass is a perishable skill, much like shooting. It requires practice. Nowadays, we have wrist-mounted GPS units, handheld units, and smartphones that provide us with navigational aids. But what if the batteries run out or your GPS gets submerged and shorts out? Now what? How do you get back home? Do you have a backup method of navigation?

The Core Vision Training land navigation course teaches you how to read and orient a map and navigate using a compass so that you make it back home safely. The two available courses are Intro To Land Navigation and Basic Map Reading.

WHAT’S COVERED

  • How to read and orient a map
  • How to familiarize yourself with a map using a compass
  • Individual Pace Count
  • Dead Reckoning & Terrain Association
  • How to identify significant terrain features
  • How to identify minor terrain features
  • How to read contour lines
  • How to plot locations on a map

In the end, the time you invest in training for an event that may never occur is your responsibility. The flip side of that is if that event ever does happen, do you want to be the one who lets your spouse and children down?

We encourage you to reflect on the cost of your personal decisions and how you choose to spend your time and money. Remember, when seconds count, law enforcement is minutes away, and a lot can happen in that time. You can lose your whole world in those few minutes.

If you are ready to accept that risk, that’s on you. But, if you believe your life and the lives of your loved ones are worth every ounce of your effort, train like it. Train like they matter. Train with Core Vision Training.

SIG P365 X-MACRO: It’s a 17+1. Here are the details

As many of you have already heard (and more are about to), SIG Sauer has released another hybrid compact pistol in the SIG P365 line — like its predecessors, the “SIG P365 X-Macro” has just a 1″ profile. But this one has 17 round capacity P365X magazine.

This might not be as big a surprise as the original P365s were for their capacity, but that’s likely because we’ve at least partially become inured to rapid advances in small frame pistol design. That doesn’t make it any less a desirable evolution in the P365, though, particularly when you consider that same mag will fit in the P365 model you already own.

P365 XMacro Specs

The P365-XMacro is a polymer frame, striker-fired pistol that features a new grip module, the “Macro-Compact-Grip Module”. The Macro-Compact Grip Module features a standard 1913 accessory rail, an integrally compensated optics-ready slide with their XRAY3 day/night sights, and a flat trigger. The weapon ships with interchangeable small, medium, and large backstraps, and two 17 round P365 XMacro magazines. As one would expect, the pistol  is optimized for use with SIG electro-optic red dot sights and weapon lights.

P365-XMACRO Specs:

Tom Taylor, SIG’s Chief Marketing Officer, had this to say about the new pistol:

“When the P365 was introduced, it reimagined the possibilities of everyday carry, and the P365-XMACRO continues this tradition delivering more on everything that made the P365 the number one selling, and most award-winning gun in America.

“The innovative magazine design of the P365-XMACRO delivers on capacity while maintaining the slim design, making it more comfortable and more concealable than any other 17+1-round pistol on the market. The integrated compensator of the P365-XMACRO reduces muzzle flip making follow-up shots faster and easier to stay on target shot after shot for even more accuracy. It is very simple, like the name suggests, with the P365-XMACRO you get more of everything you want in an everyday carry pistol, and you no longer need to compromise your capacity for concealability or shootability.”

P365 XMacro First Looks

Aaron Cowan of Sage Dynamics recently posted these images to social media with the comment, “The 365 line has been growing on me, and now I have [one that is] 17-round capacity, optic-ready, with adjustable back straps and a more robust accessory rail.”

He also notes that this gun does a good job of bridging the gap between “full size guns” and the micro compacts with high magazine capacity.

P365 XMacro Magazines

As noted, the P365 XMacro has a 17+1 round magazine potential before mag extensions. As John Hollister of Sig Sauer Academy said, “XMacro vs XL: same slide and thinness. You just get more. Twelve vs. seventeen.

Happily, that 17-round magazine can be used in any P365 pistol (assuming you already have one).

So to get over that hurdle but still have the same feel as an AR-15, you’re looking at an AR10 The AR10 has the same look and feel as the AR-15.
