AR15NEWS Weekly Photo and Build Details

Posted on December 10th, 2012 by ar15news

One of the things I love about the AR-15 is its modularity.  The fact that one gun can have so many different configurations is just awesome.  Many AR-15 owners, including myself, will have multiple different uppers configured for a specific purpose or style that can be swapped out on the fly.  I personally only keep a few lowers built at any given time but have many upper configurations available ranging from a few really light weight to a few beefier with a quad rail, plus 5.56 and 300 Blackout.  The upper in the picture below is one I built as a lightweight setup while still giving me the longer extension of a 15″ rail.  I’ve not had this one for super long but it shoots super smooth and I don’t see myself changing anything on it anytime soon.  If you’re interested, check out the details of this build below.  You can click on the images below to enlarge them.

AR15NEWS Weekly Photo and Build Details 12-10-12 Annotated

1.  GoGun USA SuperComp NoTalon XL:  Sometimes function and beauty just don’t go together.  That is the case with the SuperComp NoTalon XL.  I can’t say it’s the coolest looking muzzle brake in the world but it definitely performs like a superstar.  I’ve been using a couple of their older versions for the past few years and I’ve been very satisfied with their performance in recoil reduction and muzzle control.  The new XL version is a bit longer because they’ve added an extra set of ports towards the end of the muzzle which seems to have really fine tuned it.  There’s not too much you can say about a brake but I do think its the reason this upper is such a smooth shooter.  I purchase most of my stuff but this particular brake was given to me by Dr. Chet at GoGun USA.  You can purchase one for yourself at their online store.

2.  Elzetta Design ZFL-M60 light:  The Elzetta ZFL-M60 is a light I’ve been drooling over for quite some time now and now that I have one I can’t put it down.  It’s by far the nicest flashlight I’ve ever owned.  There are so many configurations to pick from but mine has the High/Strobe tail cap.  You can purchase the other tail caps if you want to be able to switch it around.  I started wanting one of these back when I first saw a video that Ares Armor did where they were trying to kill one and couldn’t (watch the video here).  They finally had to shoot it with a shotgun to make it stop running.  Meanwhile the SureFire had already bitten the dust.  If you need a flashlight that will not fail you, this is the one.  RainierArms.com has them in-stock and at a slightly discounted price right now. While you’re there you can pick up one of these awesome “Just Shoot It” pvc patches too.

3.  Haley Strategic Partners Thorntail SBR Light Mount:  There are a ton of good quality light mounts available on the market today but not many offer the versatility and affordability as the HSP Thorntail which is manufactured in Colorado by Impact Weapon Components.  The upper in the picture above is a 16″ barrel with a 15″ rail so I decided to set this one up with the SBR version of the Thorntail which has a shorter arm.  This keeps the mount forward on the rail without extending the light too far forward right into the blast of the muzzle.  There are so many different configurations available for the Thorntail that you’d be hard pressed to find a flashlight that you couldn’t use with it.  The HSP Thorntail is available for purchase at ImpactWeaponsComponents.com.  Don’t forget to use the code “AR15NEWS” at checkout to save yourself 5% off  your order.

4.  Magpul Rail Vertical Grip (RVG):  I wish I had some crazy great story about this grip…but I don’t.  Vertical grips are pretty boring.  I can tell you that it’s lightweight which is why I chose it for this build.  Its not my favorite Vertical Grip of all time (that would be my Gear Sector Vert Grip) but it works just as good and you can’t argue with the cost.  Again, I will tell you to buy it where I purchased mine, which is from ImpactWeaponsComponents.com.  Don’t forget to use the code “AR15NEWS” at checkout to save yourself 5% off  your order.

5.  Impact Weapons Components 45 Offset QD Sling Mount:  The one and only issue I had with the rail I used for this build was that it didn’t come with any QD attachment points.  I typically use a single-point sling but there are always those situations where you need a 2-point sling so I like to keep my options open.  To solve this issue I installed one of the new 45 degree offset QD Sling Mounts from Impact Weapons Components.  (I think you can see they are one of my favorites)  It’s very low profile and can be installed anywhere on a 1913 picatiny rail.  I mounted mine almost half way up the top section of the rail.  This keeps it out of the way of my hand but close enough that its easy to use.  As with all products on IWC’s website, if you use the code “AR15NEWS” at checkout you’ll save 5%.

6.  556 Tactical Evolution Modular Rail:  Last but not least is what really makes this a lightweight build.  The 556 Tactical Evolution modular rail is a more aggressive looking version of the very popular Samson Evolution rail.  By ditching the standard quadrail and going with the Evolution I was able to have a much lighter 15″ rail than what I have on any of my other guns.  The modularity of it though made it so I didn’t miss out on anything.  I have rail sections that I can bolt on any place I need them and keep a smooth surface where I don’t.  It mounts up solid and installs on a standard AR-15 barrel nut in just a few minutes.  If you are looking for an awesome looking rail that is gives you high quality, strength and modularity and not break the bank this is a great option.  Check them out at 556Tactical.com.

**Other notable items in this picture are a Shellback Tactical Banshee Plate Carrier (absolutely awesome PC by the way) and Line of Fire Tactical Gloves.  There are some TROY Industries BUIS but you can’t see them.

AR15NEWS Weekly Photo and Build Details

Had a short delay between articles in our “Weekly Photo and Build Details” series with Holidays and our Facebook Giveaway going on but we are back at it and I think you’ll like this one.  This time around I will focus on 6 components to one of my rifles.  Five of them I’ve been using for quite some time but the sixth one is very new to me.  Just to restate what we’ve already discussed, I am not being compensated or asked to tell you guys about these products.  Most of them are products I have purchased myself with my own money because I believe in their quality and I like how they work.  Anyways, check out the photo below and the details that follow.    You can click on the images to see them full size as well.

11-30-12 Build Details AXTS AX556 ALG Defense BAD Impact Weapons Aimpoint Magpul

1.  Centurion Arms C4 12.0 RailOne of my personal favorite rails, the Centurion Arms C4 rail was designed based on the operational experience of the owner of Centurion Arms who is an active duty Navy Seal.  As I’ve mentioned before, they are a Freefloat 2-piece rail that installs directly onto the existing barrel nut which gives you lightning quick installation and removal.  They also feature 4 QD sling mounts as well.  Probably one of the sturdiest rails you can buy.  You do have to pay a little bit more to have the best but its well worth the cost.  I purchased mine from RainierArms.com,

2.  AXTS Weapons Systems AX556 Lower:  Aside from its very unique and awesome looks there is a better reason why I love this lower.  Those of you who have known me for a while know that I am a big fan of ambidextrous operation on my rifles.  I think every prepared shooter needs to practice shooting with both hands.  If you ever find yourself wounded in a gun fight, whether at home or at war, and lose the use of your strong side hand/arm you need to be able to use your week side.  A good way to make this easier is to make the functions of your rifle ambidextrous.  The AX556 lower gives you the most ambidextrous control over any other lower on the market.  There are others on the market with Ambit Bolt Release and very few offer an Ambi Mag Release.  However, none offer a built-in Bolt Hold except for the AX556.  It also accommodates the Battle Arms Development 45 Degree Selectors as well. (see below)  Unfortunately this is not a very easy lower to purchase.  They are on a 60-90 day backorder at the moment.  I can’t tell you who but I was only able to purchase mine because a very well known Industry Leader / Trainer had one for sale.  Basically, if you see one for sale, snag it!!  If not, get your name on the list at http://axtsweapons.com/products/AX556

3.  ALG Defense ACT Trigger:  So far so good.  I’m really impressed with this affordable trigger group.  For $65 its probably one of the best bang for your buck triggers out there. These are standard mil-spec triggers that are Nickel Boron coated and have been tuned by Geissele Automatics (makers of $200-300 trigger groups).  The NiB coating and polishing have really reduced any grittiness that is usually associated with Mil-Spec triggers.  Trigger pull is around 6lbs. which is not as light as some of the more expensive triggers but this is a Mil-Spec trigger which means it needs to be at 5.5lbs or higher.  Some triggers you’ll find in a standard LPK are closer to 9/9.5lbs.  I have not issue with recommending this trigger group to anyone looking to upgrade their standard trigger group.  Check out ALGDefense.com for more info.  I purchased my ALG Defense ACT trigger from Rainier Arms.

4.  Battle Arms Development Ambi Safety Selectors:  If you haven’t heard of Battle Arms Development yet then you haven’t been listening to me.  I won’t build a gun without these awesome selectors as a first component.  This specific model is the BAD-CASS-SA-ST.  That stands for the Combat Ambi Safety Selector – Semi Automatic – Short Throw.  The standard BAD-ASS selector is a huge upgrade by itself but the BAD-CASS family is a beefed up combat version of the BAD-ASS.  By using a dovetail mounting system they’ve reduced the stress put on the screws of the selector.  The Short Throw model bumps it up even one more notch by reducing the travel from SAFE to FIRE by 45 degrees.  This makes the action itself easier and much quicker.  I have two rifles with the Short Throw levers on them and love them.  You are supposed to have a 45 degree selector “compatible” lower but there are ways around that.  (contact me if you have any questions)  These are by far the best on the market and I put them on every rifle I own.  If its half the price, its because its only half as good.  You can purchase yours from Battle Arms Development.

5.  Rainier Arms RAPTOR Ambi Charging Handle:  If you’re just heading out to the backyard to shoot some cans you will probably be just fine with your standard AR-15 charging handle but if your AR will see some hard use the standard charging handle is one of the first things you should replace.  The Rainier Arms RAPTOR Ambi Charging Handle is a brand new product for 2012 but it has already made some huge waves in the industry.  They really are mechanically speaking works of art.  Both sides have the same style skeletonized latches and they function exactly the same as the other.  The best part is without intentionally damaging these you aren’t going to break them.  They are built like a tank!  These will be as essential to my future builds as my BAD-ASS selectors.  I did receive a couple of these on the house from my buddy John but have already purchased additional units from the my favorite retailer who just happens to make these, RainierArms.com.

6.  Impact Weapons Components QD Sling Mount for Magpul UBR stock:  Its kind of hard to see in this pic but this is an upgrade that was seriously needed.  The standard Magpul UBR stock comes with a reversible QD sling mount but its a real pain to swap it around.  What’s worse is that once you switch it to the side you want it makes it difficult to run weak side drills while using a single point sling that is mounted to it.  Earl at Impact Weapons Components started his business by looking at a product and finding the small things that needed to be tweaked.  For the UBR he designed a QD Sling Mount that replaced the sideways facing QD with a downward facing QD sling mount.  The result is a QD Sling Mount that is ambidextrous.  Its CNC machined to fit right in place of the stock unit and is awesome.  I’m a huge fan of this product and I use IWC products a lot.  Now switching from strong side to weak side and back is no issue.  It even works well with a 2-point sling.  Check this and many other great products out at ImpactWeaponsComponents.comDon’t forget to use the code “AR15NEWS” at checkout to save 5% on ALL PRODUCTS in their online store.

NEW!! Haley Strategic Partners – Thorntail Offset Mount

Posted on November 6th, 2012 by ar15news

The guys over at Haley Strategic Partners did a huge push on this new product the other day so I figured I would hold off on sharing until the buzz slowed down a bit and then stir it back up a bit.  As many of you already know from some of my previous posts, I’m a huge fan of the Thorntail light mount from HSP.  The main reason for that is that they just work awesome!!  They put the light where I want it and are very robust.  Another part is that they are produced by one of my favorite manufacturers, Impact Weapons Components, so I know the people who are making it and the type of workmanship they put into their product.  We’ve been watching the evolution of the original Thorntail grow into many different products and now they are introducing the new Thorntail Offset mount.  This new mount is much more than just a light mount.  The Thorntail Offset mount features a 1913 Picatinny rail section to allow for rail mounted pistol lights, Iron Sights and other accessories to be mounted at an offset to your rail system.  I for one will be mounting a set of BUIS on a pair of these.  Looking forward to checking them out.  For now, check out the pics and details below.

Product Details:

THORNTAIL Offset 1913 Adaptive Light MOUNT-N-SLOT was designed to expand the mounting locations and illumination capability of rail-mounted weaponlights.

This enables the Operator to position the rail mounted weaponlight up to several inches beyond the end of the forend or rail system allowing the shooter to place the support hand farther forward on the weapon, improving the shooter’s control, speed and accuracy while increasing usable space for attaching IR devices, lasers, grips, etc.

45 Degree Offset design places the bezel of the weaponlight to reduce barrel shadowing during critical low light situations.

Can also be used as a 45 Offset mounting platform for BUIS.
